Our view on the 1972 vintage
1972 was a bad year for wine in Bordeaux due to a late flowering, and cold and rainy summer (with even hail in August on Saint Emilion !). On the other hand for 1972 red Burgundy wines, the ones that are the most concentrated give good wines and some wines made close to Beaune (Beaune, Nuits st Georges) can be attractive. The best wines of the Rhone Valley are found among 1972 Cornas and 1972 Hermitage. In Loire and Alsace, 1972 was rather bad, and in Champagne, the grapes struggle to reach their full maturity contributing to the delay of the harvest, but then the frosts of October occasioned great damage in terms of quantity and quality.
