Our view on the 1973 vintage
the 1973 vintage is considered rather weak on Bordeaux wines, because the rains gorged the grapes with water, giving light and rather diluted wines. Certain Medoc Grands Crus Classes having managed to sort 1973 Bordeaux Red have done well. The 1973 Bordeaux white should be avoided. In Burgundy, the abundant rains were fatal in the Cote de Nuits, but the Cote de Beaune produced some interesting 1973 white Burgundy wines, especially the 1973 Meursault wines. The 1973 Champagne wines were more successful for many producers. The 1973 wines of the Rhone Valley were full of fruity aromas, but only the best producers have been able to make wine that are still enjoyable today. Large yields in Alsace, with good quality and success in Gewurztraminer.
Which 1973 wine to buy? Our 1973 best buying advices
Our buying advice for 1973: the 1973 sweet Bordeaux wines can be considered (1973 Yquem produced a fine vintage at the price of a huge sorting) , and the Meursault 1973 wines can reserve some nice surprises, like some 1973 Champagne, and also some 1973 Gewurztraminers in Alsace.
