After the Foucault brothers' passing in 2015, the Clos Rougeard was bought by Martin Bouygues in June 2017. The Clos Rougeard estate strives to guarantee a perpetual level of greatness for their wines that have been cultivated with no added pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic molecules for several decades. As soon as they started to run the Clos Rougeard estate, the Foucault brothers became real models for many other winegrowers in the Loire valley region thanks to their organic method of cultivation, without even asking for their vines to be certified. Since the beginning of the century, the Clos Rougeard estate has produced truly exceptional wines. The Foucault brothers chose to grow their vines and make their wines on a single plot basis. Today, Clos Rougeard produces about 20,000 bottles a year. On average, the vines are around 40 years old, and harvest is always manual. The wines are barrel-aged for 18 to 24 months, with a low-interventionist approach during vinification. Clos Rougeard offers three red wine cuvees made from Cabernet Franc in the Saumur Champigny appellation: the Le Clos cuvee, made from the blend of two plots, the Les Poyeux cuvee, made from grapes that are grown on a 3 hectares single-plot with sandy soils, which gives a very fine wine, and the Le Bourg cuvee, grown on a more calcareous soil, which consequently requires more time for the wine to age and to express its full potential. Part of the Clos Rougeard estate's, Saumur Champigny wines are aged in barrels where several wines from Chateau Latour are being aged together. These red wines are very sophisticated. They've got that airy, floral and infusion-like character, and they're close to Burgundy wines as they don't have that green taste that can sometimes be found in Cabernet Francs from the Loire Valley. As for the white wines, in the Saumur appellation, the Breze cuvee is, of course, made from the Chenin grape variety. This cuvee reaches its best after 10 years or so in the cellar, so that it can get these oaky flavours.
