Pessac Leognan Protected Designation of Origin and Great Classed Growth
The wines of Chateau Mission Haut Brion
Chateau Mission Haut Brion is a Pessac Leognan Great Classed Growth (classification of 1959). The Dillon family has owned the Chateau since 1983, when it was bought from the Woltner family. Mission Haut Brion estate is located in Pessac, next to Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Garonne. The 10,000 vine stock/ha vineyard covers 29 hectares of vines (including 3 ha of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc for the Bordeaux Blanc production) that grow on gravel, sand and clay soils. These vines are about 30 years old and are grown according to the sustainable winegrowing principles. The vineyard is made up of 3 red grape varieties: 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 410% Cabernet Franc, and 3 white grape varieties: 85% Semillon, 14% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle.
The Dillons were already the owners of Chateau Haut Brion, and when they bought Mission Haut Brion, it was feared that this newly acquired estate would become a second wine for Haut Brion, but it didn't happen. Chateau Mission Haut Brion produces two Red Bordeaux wines and one white wine. Mission Haut Brion's Great Wine is outstanding: a powerful, strong wine. It stands out with the depth of its colour, its intense and mouth-filling personality, and its rich tannic structure. It's got a great ageing potential (15 to 35 years and more), and for eight of its best vintages, it got the best tasting note score ever: 100 from critic Robert Parker (in 2010, 2009, 2005, 2000, 1989, 1982, 1959, 1955). Chateau La Tour Haut Brion's final vintage was 2005; the label was discontinued after that year. Since 2006, the grapes from La Tour Haut Brion have been used in the production of Mission Haut Brion's second wine, "La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion". This second wine is of great quality. It can be a good introduction to the first cuvee, as it is suppler. It can be kept in the cellar for 10 years and even more. Chateau Mission Haut Brion's white wine changed its name in 2009. It was then known under the name of "Laville Haut Brion", but was renamed "La Mission Haut Brion". This change of name had no impact on the wine's quality: Mission Haut Brion has always produced outstanding white wines that are described as exceptional, like Chateau Haut Brion's white wine. Domaine Mission Haut Brion's wines are among the best Bordeaux wines. Wine enthusiasts from around the world, who are looking for luxury products, seek after these wines.
