Exceptional Meursault and Macon wines

Wines from Domaine Comtes Lafon, Dominique Lafon and Héritiers du Comte Lafon: buy at the best price

The domaine des Comtes Lafon spans over 16 hectares in Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet planted with chardonnay, and in Volnay and Monthélie planted with pinot noir. Led by Dominique Lafon, it has been farmed biodynamically for over 15 years. The wines, aged 18 to 22 months, are fined before bottling; the reds go through approximately 30% new oak. The domaine des only one grand cru, but not the least: the Montrachet. Dominique Lafon also expresses his expertise through the Héritiers du Comte Lafon in the Mâconnais and an eponymous négociant label, Dominique Lafon, produced from grapes grown on his own land or on leased plots. These cuvées uphold the same high standards and offer broader access to the highly sought-after Lafon style.

History of Domaine des Comtes Lafon

It all began in 1869, when the Boch family, landowners in Meursault, built the house and cellars at Clos de la Barre. In 1894, on Saint Vincent's Day, lawyer Jules Lafon married Marie Boch and became the estate's true founder. A visionary, he acquired exceptionally well-situated plots in Meursault's and Volnay's finest climats, followed in 1919 by a prized plot in Montrachet. Ennobled, made a count and elected mayor of Meursault, he gave the property his name. The estate's first vintage bottled entirely on site was 1935.

After a long period of sharecropping, René Lafon took the reins in 1956 and saved the vineyard from being broken up. In 1985, his son Dominique Lafon took charge of the estate and began a profound transformation: the gradual end of sharecropping, completed in 1993; the abandonment of herbicides; conversion to organic farming starting in 1995; and then a complete shift to biodynamics. In 1999, the family purchased an estate in Milly-Lamartine, in the Mâconnais, whose wines are sold under the Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon label. Today, it comprises nearly 26 hectares farmed organically and biodynamically since 2003. In 2007, Dominique also established a separate venture under his own name, producing wines independently at the château in Bligny-lès-Beaune. In 2011, the purchase of plots from the former Domaine René Manuel, shared with Domaine Roulot, added the Poruzots and Bouchères climats. Since late 2021, Dominique has handed the reins to his daughter Léa and his nephew Pierre, the family's fifth generation.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine des Comtes Lafon

The Meursault vineyard extends across four communes of the Côte de Beaune and encompasses around fifteen appellations, including one grand cru and numerous premiers crus. The estate has the rare distinction of holding plots in all six premiers crus of Meursault's central group, from Perrières and Charmes to Gouttes d'Or, including Genevrières, Poruzots and Bouchères. It also holds the Clos de la Barre monopole behind the family home, the Désirée named plot, a plot in Montrachet and superb red-wine climats in Volnay and Monthélie. The Jurassic clay-limestone soils vary from one climat to another: poor, stony scree in Perrières and deeper marl in Charmes and Genevrières. The vines average around forty years of age, and yields are limited to approximately 35 hectoliters per hectare.

In the Mâconnais, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon farms plots spread across three areas: Milly-Lamartine and Bussières, Chardonnay and Uchizy, and Viré-Clessé, along with vines in Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé. These clay-limestone terroirs, planted exclusively with chardonnay, deliver remarkable freshness and salinity. Under the Dominique Lafon label, there are approximately 4.5 hectares of chardonnay and pinot noir in Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Volnay, Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses and Chassagne-Montrachet, with a clear preference for higher-slope plots that yield greater tension and minerality.

Winemaking at Domaine des Comtes Lafon

For the whites, the grapes are pressed as whole bunches, then the juice settles for twenty-four hours before fermentation with indigenous yeasts alone. Aging takes place in barrels over two winters, with restrained use of new oak: none for the village-level cuvées, up to approximately 70% for Charmes and Perrières, a lower proportion for Genevrières, and exclusively new barrels for Montrachet in its first year before it moves to older oak. Bottling takes place the following spring, with DIAM closures used since 2013. The reds are fully destemmed and vinified in stainless steel tanks, with gentle extraction that preserves the fruit and finesse of the tannins.

In the Mâconnais, winemaking at Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon centers on gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation and aging exclusively in large oak vessels—foudres and demi-muids—to preserve the purity of the chardonnay. Wines bearing the Dominique Lafon label follow the same philosophy as the family estate, with deliberately shorter aging that emphasizes tension and energy in an openly experimental spirit.

The wines of Domaine des Comtes Lafon

Le Montrachet Grand Cru: sourced from approximately 32 ares acquired in 1919, this legendary cuvée is produced in quantities of just a few hundred bottles. Restrained power, mineral depth, candied citrus, hazelnut and vibrant salinity, with aging potential exceeding thirty years.

Meursault 1er Cru Perrières: the pinnacle of the estate's whites, from poor, stony soils. Precise and focused, with almost crystalline minerality, it combines lemon, struck flint and a remarkably long, saline finish.

Meursault 1er Cru Charmes: the estate's largest plot, just below Perrières. Historically opulent, it has gained tension since the move to biodynamics, with notes of ripe white fruit, fresh butter and hazelnut.

Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières: from deeper marl soils, a seductive, floral and spicy wine with notes of honey, apricot and dried fruit, combining roundness with elegant freshness.

Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d'Or: a generous, sun-drenched cuvée known for its full palate and aromatic richness (yellow fruit, beeswax, sweet spices). It needs a few years in the cellar.

Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots: added to the range in 2011, this climat offers a refined, savory and subtly smoky profile, with crisp white fruit and mineral notes.

Meursault 1er Cru Bouchères: a small 30-are plot, also from the former Domaine René Manuel. Floral purity, a silky texture and a delicately lemony finish give it a graceful, slender profile.

Meursault Clos de la Barre: an emblematic monopole behind the family home. Distinctive in character, it rivals many premiers crus in density, clear-cut minerality and length.

Meursault Désirée: a 43-are named plot producing an appealing, indulgent white with notes of honey and candied lemon, opulent yet always pure on the palate.

Meursault village: a blend of old vines from Clos de la Baronne, En la Barre, En Luraule and Les Crotots. Expressive and balanced, it combines vibrant minerality, tension and generosity.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain: from the heights of Puligny, a chardonnay full of finesse and energy, with aromas of citrus, white flowers and flint.

Puligny-Montrachet Champ Croyon: a recent single-plot cuvée with a touch of Meursault character, offering pear, citrus and spice, with remarkable lift on the palate. Very limited production.

Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-du-Milieu: the flagship red, from nearly four hectares, although only the old vines go into the cuvée. Deep and fragrant (black cherry, violet, spices), with fine tannins and the potential to age for twenty years.

Volnay 1er Cru Champans: two-thirds of the vines were planted in 1922, with the remainder replanted in 1989. This early-ripening climat produces a dense pinot noir with velvety dark fruit, supported by fine structure.

Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes: from just 38 ares, the estate's most ethereal Volnay, with notes of rose, raspberry and forest floor, and a refined, lingering mineral finish.

Volnay village: made from young plantings in Santenots, this is a lively, floral, easy-drinking pinot noir with supple tannins, ready to enjoy sooner.

Monthélie 1er Cru Les Duresses: from one hectare of hillside next to Volnay, an honest red with fresh red fruit and firm tannins that benefits greatly from five to ten years in the cellar.
