Frequently Asked Questions

Red Bordeaux wines are based primarily on three emblematic grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Merlot dominates largely on the Right Bank, particularly in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, where it lends the wines roundness, generosity, and aromas of ripe red fruits. Cabernet Sauvignon asserts itself on the Left Bank, especially in the Médoc and Pessac-Léognan, bringing structure, firm tannins, and a fine capacity for ageing. Cabernet Franc, more discreet in volume, often plays a valuable blending role, contributing aromatic finesse and freshness. Other secondary grape varieties such as Petit Verdot or Malbec sometimes complete the Bordeaux blends.

Offering a Bordeaux wine is always a thoughtful gesture, provided you adapt your choice to the recipient's taste and the occasion. For a lover of powerful, age-worthy wines, look towards the great appellations of the Médoc such as Pauillac or Saint-Estèphe, whose 2016, 2018, or 2020 vintages are particularly successful. For someone who prefers rounder, more immediately accessible wines, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru or a Pomerol will be a judicious choice. If the budget is tighter, do not overlook the satellite appellations such as Lalande-de-Pomerol or the Côtes de Bordeaux, which offer excellent value for money. Finally, a vintage Sauternes will make an original and memorable gift for lovers of sweet white wines.

A great red Bordeaux wine calls for a table worthy of its stature. The most classic and successful pairings remain red meats: a roasted Pauillac lamb with a wine from the same appellation is an anthological combination, as is a duck breast with ceps alongside a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. Hard or semi-hard cheeses such as aged Comté or old Cantal also pair very well with Bordeaux tannins. For older wines with softened tannins, sauce-based preparations, a hare civet or a beef Wellington will be inspired choices. More adventurous enthusiasts can also explore pairings with noble mushrooms such as black truffle, whose earthy aromas resonate magnificently with the woody and spiced notes of great Fine Wine Bordeaux wines.

The distinction between the Left Bank and the Right Bank in Bordeaux is fundamental to understanding the wine styles of the region. The Left Bank encompasses prestigious appellations such as the Médoc, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, and Margaux. The soils there are composed of well-draining gravels, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, which produces structured, tannic wines with excellent ageing potential. The Right Bank is home to Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, and Fronsac, on clay-limestone terroirs more favourable to Merlot. The wines there are generally softer, fruitier, and more approachable at an earlier stage. These two banks embody two great souls of the Bordeaux vineyard, complementary and equally remarkable in their own right.

The serving temperature is a detail that changes everything when tasting a Bordeaux wine. A young, fruity red Bordeaux from an entry-level appellation benefits from being served slightly cool, around 15-16°C, to preserve its aromatic freshness. For the great wines of the Médoc or Saint-Émilion, a temperature of 17 to 18°C is ideal: it allows the tannins to express themselves harmoniously without the alcohol taking over. It is advisable to take the bottle out of the cellar about an hour before serving and, if the wine is young and structured, to decant it for 30 minutes to 1 hour to aerate it and fully reveal its aromas. Avoid at all costs serving a Bordeaux at room temperature in summer, as this would crush the aromas and accentuate the perception of alcohol.

The capacity for ageing is one of the most remarkable characteristics of Bordeaux wines, but it varies considerably according to the appellations, châteaux, and vintages. The grands crus classés of the Médoc — Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, Saint-Julien — are the kings of longevity: the finest vintages such as 2000, 2005, 2010, or 2016 can be kept and continue to develop for 20 to 40 years, or even longer for the great growths. The wines of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, dominated by Merlot, generally reach their peak earlier, between 10 and 25 years depending on the producer. Regional appellation Bordeaux or Côtes de Bordeaux wines, for their part, are designed to be enjoyed in their youth, ideally within 5 to 8 years of their vintage. To optimise ageing, a cellar with a stable temperature between 12 and 14°C, away from light and vibrations, with a humidity level of around 70%, is essential. Patience remains the foremost quality of the Bordeaux collector.

A world reference renowned for the quality of its premium wines, it is the birthplace of many châteaux listed in the famous 1855 classification, a hallmark of quality and prestige for the classified grands crus of Bordeaux featured within it.

The Bordeaux Vineyard: its History and Appellations

With a rich heritage and history, the Bordeaux vineyard has built a legacy recognised throughout the world over the centuries: a way of putting France and its wines at the forefront of the global stage. The development of the vineyard was greatly driven by the Romans.

Within the Bordeaux region, the Left Bank and the Right Bank, on either side of the Garonne, are home to numerous Châteaux spread across no fewer than 57 appellations.

The Left Bank of Bordeaux

Located to the west of the Garonne, the Left Bank is made up of several prestigious appellations: Médoc, Graves, and Sauternais.

The Médoc is composed of the following AOCs (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée): Margaux (Château Margaux, Brane Cantenac, Cantenac Brown, Giscours), Listrac-Médoc, Moulis en Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe and Haut-Médoc. Each of these AOCs has its own typicity and châteaux well known to enthusiasts. The wines of the Médoc are delicate and voluptuous, predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, offering a beautiful aromatic palette combining structure and finesse as well as a fine ageing potential.

The Graves appellation includes the AOCs Pessac-Léognan, Graves and Graves Supérieures. It produces rich, concentrated and complex wines, punctuated with smoky notes. Tannic and full-bodied, a short stay in the cellar perfectly helps to release the harmonious and complex aromas of these wines.

The Sauternais appellation encompasses notably the Sauternes and Barsac appellations, which are the most emblematic. The greatest sweet wines come from these fine appellations, including the magnificent Château d'Yquem

The Right Bank of Bordeaux

Located to the east of the Garonne, the Right Bank also boasts prestigious AOCs, most notably the Libournais, the most famous, which encompasses Saint-Emilion, Pomerol, Lalande-de-Pomerol, Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac.

The wines of Saint-Émilion are the most representative of the Right Bank: they are adorned with elegance and finesse, and captivate the taster with their aromas of dark fruits, spices and plum. As they age, the aromas evolve towards notes of leather and undergrowth, with beautifully silky tannins and an exquisite length. The best-known red wines of this appellation are Angélus, Ausone, Beauséjour Bécot, Canon, Cheval Blanc and Pavie.

Pomerol, the smallest appellation in Bordeaux, is also home to true treasures, the most famous of which is Pétrus. Pomerol wines have a magnificent texture, dense and velvety. This silky feel in the mouth is unique to them. Delicious and refined tannins, great elegance and a persistent length, all with freshness — that is what a great Pomerol looks like!

The 1855 Classification

Beyond the classification of Bordeaux wines (Fine Wine de Bordeaux, grand cru, cru bourgeois, grand cru classé de Bordeaux, grand cru classé de Saint-Emilion…), critics' opinions are also closely followed when choosing the best Bordeaux wines, and help to distinguish — among other things — a modest wine from a good wine, a Fine Wine or an exceptional wine. And in particular the Robert Parker guide, whose score has the power to elevate a wine to the rank of a very great Fine Wine of Bordeaux. And even if a wine's score does not tell the whole story, the overall perception of the vintage's quality also comes into play. A "good year" or "exceptional year" will be an important factor in deciding to purchase a Fine Wine!

The Best Wines of Bordeaux

Several Bordeaux estates and châteaux rank among the best red wines in the world. These Grands Crus break records in Parker, Bettane Dessauve and Wine Spectator scores, such as Pétrus 1989, Château Margaux 1996, Latour 2003 or Haut Brion 2009.

The appellations considered to be the finest are Margaux, Pomerol, Saint-Emilion, Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac and Sauternes. Indeed, the white wines of Sauternes are also highly sought after, most notably Yquem, which is the only white wine to feature in the 1855 classification. Bordeaux therefore offers delicious wines across several colours!

Bordeaux Grape Varieties

Although the grape varieties used differ slightly depending on the bank, there is one characteristic common to all Bordeaux wines: they are almost exclusively blended wines. The main varieties found in red Bordeaux wines are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (which account for as much as 80% of the vineyard). White Bordeaux wines, meanwhile, are made from Sémillon and Sauvignon, and can fall into the category of dry white wines or sweet wines (moelleux white wine).

Food and Wine Pairings

Generally, Bordeaux wines are characterised by one of three typicities: supple and fruity, round and structured, or powerful and intense.

As for fruity and supple red wines, they pair perfectly with white meats and savoury tarts, followed by hard cheeses for example, or a few exceptions such as Saint-Nectaire. Rounder and more structured wines can be served with meats in sauce or grilled meats. Finally, powerful and intense red wines pair very harmoniously with strongly flavoured meats, such as lamb or game, as well as gently spiced sauces.

Regarding Bordeaux white wines, sweet wines such as Sauternes and Barsac will pair perfectly with a caramelised dessert such as a tarte tatin if one is seeking a harmonious pairing; if instead a contrasting pairing is desired, one should turn to blue-veined cheeses (Roquefort), Asian-influenced dishes seasoned with curry, or tangy desserts such as roasted apricots with rosemary.

How to find your way around
