The history of Domaine Michel Niellon

The story of Domaine Michel Niellon is that of a family deeply rooted in Burgundy’s terroir, generation after generation. It begins with Léon Niellon, whose son Marcel later takes over the estate. Léon’s grandson Michel Niellon gives the estate its true stature: he begins working with his father Marcel in the 1950s and, in the 1960s, takes the decisive step of bottling and selling his wines himself. Through dedication and meticulous care at every stage of production, Michel Niellon gradually expands the family vineyard by acquiring new plots, bringing it to its current size. His work earns him international recognition, particularly in the United States, where a significant share of production is exported.

Keen to pass on his family’s longstanding values and expertise, Michel Niellon welcomes his son-in-law Michel Coutoux to the estate in 1990, followed by his grandson Matthieu and, soon afterward, his granddaughter Lucie. Today, these younger generations oversee the vineyard and cellar day to day, maintaining a spirit of continuity and respect for tradition. This passing of the torch within the family, blending modernity and heritage, is the very soul of the estate.

Terroirs and vines of Domaine Michel Niellon

The vineyards of Domaine Michel Niellon are located primarily in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, with one grand cru plot in neighboring Puligny-Montrachet. The clay and limestone soils provide ideal conditions for Chardonnay, the region’s emblematic grape variety. The vines grow on slopes with excellent sun exposure, encouraging even ripening and good concentration in the grapes. The estate has notably old vines in several plots, particularly in the lieu-dit Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière, where vines over 80 years old yield grapes of remarkable richness and minerality. The age of these vines, combined with deliberately very low yields, gives the wines natural glycerol richness, concentration, and a creamy texture that distinguish them even among Burgundy’s greatest crus.

The vineyard is managed using a measured approach to pest and disease control: the soil is worked mechanically at the start of the growing season, without chemical herbicides, to preserve microbial life and the minerality distinctive to each terroir. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand, allowing rigorous selection of grapes in the vineyard and ensuring the harvested fruit remains intact. This precise, almost artisanal viticulture is essential to the exceptional quality of the wines produced on this outstanding Burgundy terroir.

Winemaking at Domaine Michel Niellon

In the cellar, the philosophy of Domaine Michel Niellon rests on a fundamental principle: minimal intervention to allow the terroir and vintage to express themselves fully. After whole-cluster pressing and light settling, alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wines are then transferred with a generous amount of lees to oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging. Depending on the appellation, the estate uses 20 to 30% new oak—a measured proportion that adds structure and complexity without masking the terroir. No lees stirring is carried out, and the wines are not racked before bottling, preserving the richness and texture imparted by the fine lees.

The wines are aged for at least 12 months on fine lees, giving them the richness, roundness, and creamy texture so characteristic of the Niellon style. Winemaking is adapted each year to the particular character of the vintage, with the utmost respect for the identity of the harvest. Natural yeasts are favored for fermentation, reinforcing the authenticity and distinctive character of each cuvée. At every stage, the priority is to reveal the terroir and vintage rather than showcase technique—an approach that explains the exceptional depth, purity, and longevity of the wines of Domaine Michel Niellon.

The cuvées of Domaine Michel Niellon

Bourgogne Blanc (Chardonnay): Made from young vines located close to the winery, this Bourgogne Blanc is an introduction to the wines of Michel Niellon. It offers a fresh, citrusy profile, with finely etched mineral tension and a long finish, in a generous, inviting style. Enjoy it within its first three to five years to appreciate its vibrant fruit.

Bourgogne Aligoté: Made from Aligoté, a grape variety traditionally grown in Burgundy, this small-production cuvée reflects the estate’s diversity. It offers freshness, lively acidity, and aromas of white flowers and citrus, in a taut, easy-drinking style best enjoyed young.

Chassagne-Montrachet Villages White: A direct expression of the appellation’s terroir, this village wine offers a structured Chardonnay with a golden hue and aromas of acacia and honey, alongside a full palate and remarkable richness. An approachable wine to enjoy, it already bears the estate’s distinctive stylistic signature and can develop beautifully over four to five years in the cellar.

Chassagne-Montrachet Villages Red: Made from Pinot Noir grown on the clay and limestone soils of Chassagne-Montrachet, this village red reveals red fruit aromas and an elegant, balanced, silky palate. It represents the estate’s less familiar but finely made red wines and is best enjoyed within its first five to eight years.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers (White): From a mid-slope plot, this premier cru offers ripe fruit aromas, a velvety texture, and perfectly balanced acidity, thanks to its deeper clay and gravelly limestone soils. Fleshier and more opulent than some of its neighbors, it develops considerable complexity after five to ten years in the cellar.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière (White): Located high on the slope, this climat is home to the estate’s oldest vines, some more than 80 years old. The shallow soils subject the vines to mild water stress, enhancing the wine’s concentration and minerality. This cuvée stands out for its intensity, depth, and long, almost saline finish. An exceptional premier cru to cellar for at least seven to twelve years.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes (White): This cuvée combines two neighboring plots with vines of different ages. The wine has an appealing floral and mineral profile, with a juicy, persistent palate and a broad range of aromas. Its natural balance of richness and tension is characteristic of Chassagne-Montrachet terroirs.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champgains (White): Grown on clay-limestone soils near the boundary between Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, this premier cru offers a particularly refined and elegant aromatic expression. The wine unfolds with notes of fresh pear, toasted almonds, and candied citrus, supported by a pronounced mineral structure and a finish of great purity.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie (White): At nearly one hectare, La Maltroie is the estate’s largest plot and contains vines of varying ages. The wine has a floral, fruity nose and a broad, mouthwatering palate, with appealing salinity on the finish. Slightly firmer in structure than the estate’s other premiers crus, it rewards six to ten years of cellaring.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean (White): One of the estate’s flagship white cuvées, Clos Saint-Jean strikes a compelling balance between creamy richness and mineral tension. The nose offers aromas of toast, ripe yellow fruit, and white flowers. On the palate, its density and length are impressive, with a finely etched, lingering finish. A wine that stands out in every vintage for its consistency and high quality.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean Red: The red expression of this celebrated climat, this Pinot Noir cuvée reveals the tannic and fruity character of Chassagne-Montrachet’s red wines. It offers aromas of cherries and spices, a fleshy, well-structured palate, and a lingering finish. An exceptional red wine produced in very small quantities.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie Red: Made from Pinot Noir plots in the La Maltroie climat, this red premier cru has an elegant, silky profile, with aromas of fresh red fruit and woodland undergrowth. The palate is refined and balanced, with supple tannins and a clean finish. Enjoy it within five to eight years to appreciate the full freshness of its fruit.

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru: One of the estate’s two grands crus, Bâtard-Montrachet is often considered the jewel of the Michel Niellon range. Made from old Chardonnay vines with very low yields, it develops remarkable glycerol-driven richness, an almost oily texture, and complex aromas of honey, candied citrus, hazelnut, and mineral notes. The palate has rare breadth and concentration, with an exceptionally long finish. A wine to cellar for ten to twenty years and reserve for the grandest occasions.

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru: The estate’s only plot in Puligny-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet represents the pinnacle of the Michel Niellon range. Michel Niellon himself planted the first vines in this lieu-dit in the early 1970s, using unusual methods to break through the hard rock of the slope. The resulting wine has minerality of incomparable purity and precision, with aromas of white flowers, chalk, dried fruit, and spices, an elegantly structured palate, and a finish of exceptional length. After around twelve months of aging in oak barrels, it is bottled and can be cellared and continue to develop for twenty years or more.
