Wines from Domaine Bernard Baudry: buy at the best price

From a family of winegrowers in Cravant, Burgundy, Bernard Baudry trained in viticulture at Beaune and subsequently worked as a viticultural consultant at the Tours laboratory. In 1975, he founded Domaine Bernard Baudry, located in the communes of Cravant les Coteaux and Chinon, in the Val de Loire. At the time, the estate comprised only 2 hectares of vines, but by 1982 had grown to 30 hectares. His son Matthieu joined the family estate in 2000 after completing studies in the Mâconnais, the Bordeaux region, and California. Today, the estate spans 32 hectares planted with red (30 hectares) and white (2 hectares) varieties.

The vineyard of Domaine Baudry is planted with Cabernet Franc (90%) and Chenin Blanc (10%). The vines average around thirty years old and rest on a terroir of gravel on the plain, clay-limestone on the hillsides, and sandy limestone on the plateaus. The vineyard is cultivated using environmentally friendly methods, without chemical herbicides. Since 2006, Domaine Bernard Baudry has been certified in organic farming. The wines are listed under the Chinon appellation. Domaine Bernard Baudry produces 140,000 bottles per year. The harvests are done by hand and the winemaking approach is minimally interventionist. The grapes from each plot are vinified separately in different vats made of raw cement, wood or stainless steel. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts. Ageing is carried out in vats for the lighter wines and in barrels for the more complex wines. Bottling is done without filtration, except for the rosé wines, the white wines and the Les Granges cuvée. The Chinon wines from Domaine Baudry range from fruity and supple — such as the Les Granges and Le Domaine cuvées — to more structured wines with exceptionally fine tannins, such as the La Croix Boissée, Le Clos Guillot and Les Grézeaux cuvées.
