The Ogier family, originally from Côte Rôtie, has been established in Ampuis for more than 6 generations, but until 1982, the Stéphane Ogier estate sold its grapes. In 1983, the Michel and Stéphane Ogier estate decided to begin producing its Côte Rôtie wines under its own label, at a time when the Côte Rôtie appellation was beginning to experience a new surge in popularity. After 6 vintages, Michel Ogier decided to completely stop selling to négociants, and he vinified all of his cuvées himself. The Ogier estate expanded with several parcels outside the Côte Rôtie AOC, and from 1997 onwards, Stéphane Ogier joined the estate to assist his father. The Stéphane Ogier estate gradually grew under his leadership to a total of 18 hectares.
In 2014, the Stéphane Ogier estate gained a brand-new, highly modern winery in Ampuis. From his studies in Beaune, Stéphane Ogier retained a preference for elegance and finesse, and he was very quickly inspired by what makes the greatness of Burgundy's crus — such as the singular expression of a lieu-dit — by multiplying single-parcel cuvées of Côte-Rôtie. Such as the Côte-Rôtie Belle Hélène cuvée, firm and thoroughbred, which unquestionably possesses the density and substance to integrate its oak. Belle Hélène received in 1999, 2009 and 2010 the famous perfect score of 100/100 awarded by Robert Parker (thus placing Belle Hélène from Domaine Ogier alongside the 3 famous Côte-Rôtie cuvées of Guigal: la Mouline, la Landonne and la Turque). In 2004, a luxurious new single-parcel cuvée of Côte-Rôtie was isolated: Le Lancement, which by virtue of its nobility and assertive style has established itself today as one of the flagship bottles of the Northern Rhône Valley. The wines of Domaine Ogier are often made from partially destemmed grapes (50% whole-cluster harvest in the Lancement cuvée). Among the single-parcel cuvées, Cognet and La Viallière benefit from the freshness brought by whole-cluster harvesting. In white wine, the Condrieu La Combe de Malleval displays freshness and a beautiful final salinity that contrasts with its richness. The precision of recent vintages, the exacting standards in the selection of single-parcel cuvées and the style now displayed by the wines place Domaine Stéphane Ogier among the elite of the Rhône Valley.
