The family domaine Etienne Sauzet located in Puligny Montrachet in Burgundy is one of the reference estates of the (Côte de Beaune). It was founded by Etienne Sauzet, who started with just a few parcels of vines received as an inheritance, later expanded to reach the now considerable Burgundian surface area of 15 hectares. This family house, today run by Emilie Boudot and Benoît Riffault, offers a mosaic of rare terroirs, from Bourgogne Blanc to the four grand crus of the Montrachet hill, by way of around ten premiers crus from Puligny. Managed using certified biodynamic methods, the domaine's wines are distinguished by a crystalline purity, a remarkable mineral tension and a deliberately restrained use of oak.

The TOP winemakers of Burgundy

On the viticulture side, Domaine Etienne Sauzet first transitioned to organic farming in 2006 and then to biodynamics in 2010. The wines are aged for 12 months in barrels, then 6 months in tanks. The premiers crus are aged in 20 to 30% new oak and 40% for the grands crus. Domaine Etienne Sauzet owns prestigious plots in the grands crus Bienvenues Batard Montrachet, Batard Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet and Montrachet. The Puligny Montrachet 1ers crus are not to be outdone, with the Perrières, Combettes and Folatières.

Succeeding his grandfather in 1975, Jeanine Boudot then took over with her husband, and it is now Emilie Boudot and her husband Benoit Riffault who ensure the continuity of Domaine Etienne Sauzet. Since the 1990s, numerous Puligny Montrachet négociant references have been added to the production of Domaine Etienne Sauzet, following the split of part of the estate's vineyards during a succession, but it must be acknowledged that the current range of great white Burgundies from Domaine Sauzet is superbly extensive and primarily composed of benchmark, top-tier crus. Four Burgundy Grands Crus form the crown jewels: Le Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Batard Montrachet and Bienvenues Batard Montrachet. In Puligny Montrachet Premiers Crus, no fewer than 9 references complete the production of this renowned estate (Puligny Montrachet 1ers Crus les Combettes, 1er Cru Champ Canet, 1er Cru La Truffière, 1er Cru Les Folatières, 1er Cru Les Perrières, 1er Cru Les Réferts, 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny, 1er Cru Champs Gains and 1er Cru La Garenne). At the Village appellation level, Domaine Etienne Sauzet offers a Puligny Montrachet village, as well as a Chassagne Montrachet "Les Encégnières", and at the regional appellation level, a Bourgogne Chardonnay and a Hautes Côtes de Beaune "Jardin du Calvaire". All Etienne Sauzet wines are highly recommended and of remarkable quality. The style is classic, the purity of expression of the wines is often highlighted, and the oak integrates perfectly, ensuring their harmonious ageing. The Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet is magnificent in its finesse and elegance, dense and saline, with a touch of great mineral class. The Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Combettes is a wine of sumptuous minerality, with the depth and volume of the Grands Crus. Among the 4 Grands Crus, the Batard Montrachet is enormous — a true ball of energy, of extreme intensity, with notes of fresh almond and a sapid, saline finish. A true must-seek for all great lovers of exceptional wines. In terms of vintages, and generally speaking for white Burgundies, the most highly regarded are: 1989, 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
