The wines of Domaine Berlioz

Christine and Gilles Berlioz founded their winery in 1990 on the abrupt slopes of Chignin in AOP Savoie, between limestone, silt and clay, this winery of 4.8 hectares is worked as a garden since 2007. The Domaine Berlioz voluntarily reduced its surface from 7 to 4.8 hectares in order to more comfortably work their land biodynamically (certified Demeter).

Here, the local grapes Jacquère, Roussanne, Altesse and Mondeuse express themselves naturally and with grace. The Domaine Berlioz produces precise, chiseled and singular wines in the appellations Vin de Savoie, Chignin Bergeron (Roussanne), Roussette (Altesse) and Mondeuse. Berlioz winery is broken into 3 distinct parcel groups : "Bordiot" (85 ares of Mondeuse and 15 ares of Persan), "Les Châteaux" (3 hectares of Chignin Bergeron) and "Les Crays" (50 ares of Jacquère and 30 ares of Roussette de Savoie). Harvesting is done manually in small crates to not damage the grapes. The principle of "one terroir, one wine" is the rule here as each plot is worked and valued according to its own needs. The wines are matured in egg-shaped fibreglass tank. Winemaking is natural, with wild yeasts only, and are carefully aged. The Chignin-Bergeron "Les Friponnes", of an intense lemony colour, displays a nose of white fruit and a fantastic mouth of fruit and flowers with a sleek mineral finish. A wine to drink in 7 to 10 years with river fish or Savoie cheese. The Chignin-Bergeron "Les Christine", easily identifiable by the label with the faces of two women, is a subtil and delicate mix of ripe yellow fruit and a beautiful and fine minerality. It also would pair beautifully with fish or Savoie cheese. "Les Filles" is a more gastronomic wine than the previous two, both rich and complex, with intense fruit that remains fresh and drinkable. Its clear and shiny lemon yellow colour reveals a deep bouquet of stone fruits, white flowers and fresh herbs. It's a wine that merits attention and a few years of cellaring (7 to 10 years) before broaching, without which, aeration is recommended to help develop its magnificent purity. Finally, "Jaja" is a 100% Jacquère from clay-limestone soils and 30 years-old vines. The robe is a pale yellow with tints of green, a delicate nose of flowers, fruits, fresh herbs, herbal: bergamote, quince, green hazelnut, peaches, lemon balm and chalk. The mouth is light and full of tension with precise minerality and the finish is carried by a lovely bitterness and a hint of oxidation. Be forewarned, their wines are highly sought after and prized by discerning amateurs, but the volumes produced are low, and they are very difficult to find.
