The wines of Christine and Gilles Berlioz, High couture Savoie wines
Christine and Gilles BERLIOZ created their estate in 1990 (which was renamed Domaine Partagé). Located on the steep hillsides of Chignin in the AOP Savoie, among limestone, silt and clay, the 4.8-hectare vineyard has been tended like a garden since 2007. The Berlioz estate voluntarily reduced its surface area from 7 Ha to 4.8 Ha to better practice certified biodynamic farming under DEMETER.
Jacquère, Roussanne, Altesse and Mondeuse express themselves here with great grace and naturalness, and the Berlioz estate produces red Savoie wines and white Savoie wines, always very precise, chiselled and singular, under the Vins de Savoie appellation, Chignin Bergeron (Roussanne), Roussette de Savoie (Altesse), and Mondeuse. The Berlioz vineyard is divided into 3 distinct plot groups: Bordiot: 85 ares of Mondeuse and 15 ares of Persan; Les Châteaux: 3 ha of Chignin Bergeron; and Les Crays: 50 ares of Jacquère and 30 ares of Roussette de Savoie. The harvests are done by hand, in small crates so as not to damage the grapes. The principle "one terroir, one cuvée" is the rule here, each one being worked and showcased in its own original way. Berlioz wines are aged in egg-shaped fibreglass vats. The vinifications are natural, without the addition of yeasts, and the wines are aged with great care. The Berlioz Les Friponnes cuvée, Chignin Bergeron, reveals an intense lemon-coloured robe, with a nose of white fruits, and on the palate a fantastic fruity and floral bouquet, with an elegant finish dominated by minerality. This cuvée is best enjoyed over 7 to 10 years, with a river fish or a Savoyard cheese. The Berlioz Les Christine cuvée, Chignin Bergeron, easily recognisable by its label featuring two female faces, is a subtle and delicate blend of well-ripened yellow fruit and beautiful, refined minerality. It pairs effortlessly with fish or Savoie cheeses. The Berlioz Les Filles cuvée is a great gastronomic wine, both rich and complex, with intense fruit, yet managing to remain fresh and easy to drink. Its clear and bright lemon-yellow robe reveals a deep bouquet of stone fruits, white flowers and fresh herbs. This wine deserves the attention of enthusiasts and several years of cellaring (7 to 12 years); it is even preferable to decant it, so that it can open up better and develop its magnificent purity. Finally, the Berlioz Le Jaja cuvée is a 100% Jacquère from clay-limestone soil and 30-year-old vines. On tasting, the wine displays a pale yellow robe with green reflections, a delicate nose that expresses with finesse very fresh floral, fruity and vegetal notes: bergamot, quince, green hazelnut, vine peach, lemon balm and chalk. The palate is light and lively, with precise minerality, and a finish carried by fine bitterness with a slight oxidative touch. Please note that bottles from the Berlioz estate are highly sought after by discerning enthusiasts, but as the volumes produced by the estate are very small, distribution is quite limited.
