Frequently Asked Questions

The white wines of Savoie are produced primarily from indigenous grape varieties found almost nowhere else in the world. Jacquère is the most widely cultivated white grape variety in the region: light, lively, and mineral, it yields wines that are perfect companions to Savoyard fondues and raclettes. Altesse (also known as Roussette) produces more structured and aromatic whites, notably in the Roussette de Savoie and Roussette de Seyssel appellations. Marsanne, locally nicknamed Ermitage, expresses itself with great character in the Chignin-Bergeron appellation. Finally, Chasselas, widely present around Lake Geneva, offers delicate wines with floral notes.

The great majority of Savoie wines are designed to be enjoyed in their youth, generally within two to four years of the harvest. This is particularly true of whites made from Jacquère — Apremont, Abymes, Chignin — which best express their freshness and floral aromas shortly after bottling. However, some wines from the region have genuine ageing potential. Carefully aged Roussettes de Savoie and Chignin-Bergeron can evolve favourably over five to ten years. Among the reds, the most ambitious Mondeuse d'Arbin can easily age for a decade, developing notes of truffle, leather and spice over time.

Raclette, an emblematic dish of Savoyard gastronomy, calls for a white wine capable of standing up to the generosity of the melted cheese and the richness of the cold cuts that accompany it. Jacquère-based whites, in particular an Apremont or an Abymes, are the most instinctive choices: their crisp acidity and natural lightness refresh the palate between each bite and prevent any feeling of heaviness. For those who prefer a wine with more body, a Chignin-Bergeron based on Marsanne will bring a beautiful fruity roundness that pairs harmoniously with the richness of the cheese. It is recommended to serve these wines well chilled, at around 8 to 10°C.

Savoyard viticulture is organised around several distinct appellations. The regional appellation Vin de Savoie forms the foundation of the hierarchy and can be complemented by the name of a cru, such as Apremont, Abymes, Chignin, or Cruet, each cru corresponding to a specific terroir with its own characteristics. Roussette de Savoie is an appellation dedicated exclusively to whites made from Altesse. Seyssel, one of the oldest appellations in the region, produces elegant still and sparkling whites. Crépy, situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, completes this panorama with fine and refreshing Chasselas wines. This organisation into crus within an umbrella appellation makes reading Savoyard labels a particularly rich experience.

The Savoie vineyard is one of the most fragmented and most spectacular in France: its plots are scattered over more than 200 kilometres, between lakes, glacial valleys and Alpine foothills, at altitudes that can exceed 500 metres. This mountain setting exerts a direct and decisive influence on the profile of the wines. The significant temperature variations between day and night allow the grapes to retain a high natural acidity while developing fine and precise aromas. The soils, largely derived from glacial moraines, calcareous scree and schists, give the wines a distinctive minerality and a characteristic tension. The foehn, a warm and dry wind descending from the Alps, also plays a key role in the ripening of the grapes at the end of the season.

Often overlooked, the red wines of Savoie made from Mondeuse offer a unique profile: deep colour, fine tannins, alpine freshness and aromas of dark fruits, pepper and sometimes violet. This indigenous grape variety produces structured yet never heavy wines, which gain in complexity after 3 to 8 years in the bottle (especially the crus from Arbin or Montmélian). Less well-known than the great classics, the red wines of Savoie based on Mondeuse win over enthusiasts in search of originality and easy-drinking wines, perfect with mountain cuisine.

The preferred grape variety for white wines of Savoie (70% of total wine production in Savoie) is Jacquère, an indigenous grape. Red wines are mainly made from Mondeuse, but also from grape varieties from Beaujolais, such as Gamay or from Burgundy, from Jura and from Alsace, with Pinot Noir. Savoie also shares one of the flagship white grape varieties of the Rhône Valley: Roussanne, which makes up one of the region's finest crus, Chignin Bergeron.
