History of Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille

The history of the estate dates back to 1792, at the time of the French Revolution, when the ancestors of the Boulard family were already cultivating vines in Champagne. However, it was not until 1952 that Raymond Boulard decided to vinify and market his own Champagne. The following years saw the expansion of the estate and the commitment of successive generations in the pursuit of quality and respect for the terroir.

In 2009, Francis Boulard, supported by his daughter Delphine, founded the house Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille after separating from the family estate. This turning point marked a total commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, a method that reflects the values inherited from previous generations. Today, Delphine perpetuates this tradition, bringing a touch of modernity while remaining faithful to the essence of the estate.

Terroirs and Vines of Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille

The vineyard of just over 3 hectares of the Francis Boulard et Fille estate is located largely in Cormicy, to the north-west of Reims, in the Massif de Saint-Thierry nicknamed "la petite Montagne de Reims", on siliceous limestone terroirs. Vines from the Francis Boulard estate are also present in Paradis (in the Vallée de la Marne), in Cuchery, in Cauroy-lès-Hermonville and in Mailly-Champagne, a village classified as Grand Cru of the Montagne de Reims. The Champagne wines come from an organic vineyard with a dominance of pinots (40% pinot meunier and 30% pinot noir), planted on the Massif de Saint-Thierry, in the Vesle valley, with the remaining 30% in chardonnay. Delphine Boulard has taken over from her father, and truly strives to express the grape varieties and their terroirs without distorting them. 

Winemaking at Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille

The winemaking process at Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille is as meticulous as it is authentic. Every step aims to preserve the expression of the terroir and the quality of the grapes. Fermentations, spontaneous thanks to indigenous yeasts, take place in small oak barrels and large casks, encouraging delicate micro-oxygenation.

The winemaking is parcel-by-parcel and takes place both in vats and in old wooden barrels (12 years of age), to encourage micro-oxygenation; the dosage is low, with the aim of staying as close as possible to nature. 

The wines are aged on fine lees, with regular stirring carried out according to the lunar calendar, enhancing their richness and complexity. The choice of a low or even zero dosage (Brut Nature) allows the purity of the aromas and the minerality of the cuvées to shine through. Disgorgement is carried out at the estate, ensuring optimal quality control.

The cuvées of Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille

The extra-brut and nature range (including Les Murgiers, with a majority of pinot meunier) is a benchmark in the family of powerful and sapid terroir champagnes. The blanc de Champagne cuvée Les Rachais from the Francis Boulard estate comes from a single plot cultivated in biodynamics, composed of 100% chardonnay and endowed with a fine personality, combining power and finesse. The nose is rich with well-ripened white fruits, citrus, pastries, dried fruits and subtle honeyed notes. The wine is broad on the palate, the texture is fine, the expression is powerful and long. The Champagne Petraea from the Francis Boulard estate is crafted according to a principle close to that of the Solera: each year, the latest harvest is added at a rate of 50%. Thus, the wine is composed of all preceding vintages in a decreasing proportion. This perpetual reserve was restarted in 2012 in organic farming. Intense and generous nose, aromas of fruits, white flowers, spice notes. On the palate, the Champagne is broad and rich, powerful while retaining a lovely freshness. The "Vieilles Vignes" Champagne is a 100% chardonnay blanc de blancs, which lends it finesse and freshness. It is a zero dosage, with a delicate nose of white flowers and citrus; it is supple, fine and round on the palate, yet well supported by a lovely freshness and a subtle mineral edge.
