The history of Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille

The estate’s history dates back to 1792, during the French Revolution, when the Boulard family’s ancestors were already growing vines in Champagne. It was not until 1952, however, that Raymond Boulard decided to make and market his own champagne. In the years that followed, the estate expanded, and subsequent generations committed themselves to pursuing quality and respecting the terroir.

In 2009, Francis Boulard, supported by his daughter Delphine, founded the Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille house after leaving the family estate. This turning point marked a full commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, an approach that reflects the values inherited from previous generations. Today, Delphine carries on this tradition, bringing a modern touch while remaining true to the estate’s essence.

Terroirs and vineyards of Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille

The just-over-3-hectare vineyard of Domaine Francis Boulard et fille lies largely in Cormicy, northwest of Reims, in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, nicknamed “the little Montagne de Reims,” on siliceous limestone soils. Domaine Francis Boulard also has vines in Paradis (in the Vallée de la Marne), Cuchery, Cauroy-lès-Hermonville and Mailly-Champagne, a Grand Cru village in the Montagne de Reims. The wines of Champagne come from an organic vineyard planted mainly with Pinot grapes (40% Pinot Meunier and 30% Pinot Noir) in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, in the Vesle Valley. The remaining 30% is Chardonnay. Delphine Boulard has succeeded her father and takes great care to express the grape varieties and terroirs without compromising their character. 

Winemaking at Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille

Winemaking at Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille is as meticulous as it is authentic. Every step aims to preserve the expression of the terroir and the quality of the grapes. Fermentations occur spontaneously with native yeasts in small oak barrels and large oak casks, encouraging gentle micro-oxygenation.

The wines are vinified parcel by parcel, both in tanks and in seasoned oak barrels (12 years old) to encourage micro-oxygenation. Dosage is kept low to stay as close to nature as possible. 

The wines are aged on fine lees, with regular lees stirring carried out according to the lunar calendar, enhancing their richness and complexity. Choosing a low or even zero dosage (Brut Nature) highlights the purity of the aromas and the minerality of the cuvées. Disgorgement takes place at the estate, ensuring optimal quality control.

The cuvées of Champagne Francis Boulard & Fille

The Extra Brut and Nature range, including the predominantly Pinot Meunier Les Murgiers, is a benchmark among powerful, savory terroir-driven champagnes. The white Champagne cuvée Les Rachais from Domaine Francis Boulard comes from a single biodynamically farmed parcel. Made from 100% Chardonnay, it has a distinctive character that combines power and finesse. The nose is rich with ripe white fruit, citrus, pastry and dried fruit, with subtle hints of honey. The wine is full-bodied on the palate, with a fine texture and a powerful, long finish. Petraea champagne from Domaine Francis Boulard is made according to a principle similar to the solera system: each year, the latest harvest is added at a proportion of 50%. The wine thus contains all the preceding vintages in decreasing proportions. This perpetual reserve was restarted using organically grown grapes in 2012. The nose is intense and generous, with aromas of fruit and white flowers and notes of spice. On the palate, the champagne is full-bodied and rich, powerful yet beautifully fresh. The “Vieilles Vignes” champagne is a 100% Chardonnay blanc de blancs, giving it finesse and freshness. With zero dosage, it has a delicate nose of white flowers and citrus. It is supple, fine and rounded on the palate, supported by lovely freshness and a slight mineral note.
