Grower Champagne vs. Major Houses

Grower Champagne, often called "Grower Champagne", differs from the productions of major houses through its origin and artisanal approach. These Champagne wines come from independent growers who cultivate their own vines, vinify their grapes, and make their cuvées on site. They generally own a large part or all of their vineyard. Here are some aspects that define grower Champagne:

Terroir and Origin: Champagne growers often cultivate their vines on specific parcels, which makes it possible to highlight the concept of terroir. Each grower may have parcels in different villages, offering a variety of unique flavors and aromas.

Sustainable Viticulture: Many independent Champagne growers adopt sustainable, organic, or even biodynamic viticulture practices. They place great importance on the health of their vines, biodiversity, and preserving the ecosystem.

Artisanal Winemaking: Unlike major houses that produce large volumes, Champagne growers often have more modest winemaking facilities. They tend to favor artisanal methods and closer control over the winemaking process.

Unique Cuvées: Champagne growers frequently highlight specific cuvées that reflect the characteristics of their vineyards. They may produce specific vintages, single-vineyard cuvées, or creative blends that showcase the diversity of their terroirs.

Small Quantities: Due to the more modest size of their estates, Champagne growers often produce limited quantities. This gives their cuvées an exclusive dimension, reinforcing the artisanal character and uniqueness of each bottle.

Personal Commitment: Champagne growers are often involved at every stage of the process, from vine to bottle. Their passion and dedication are reflected in the quality and distinctive character of their champagnes.

Current Trend: Over recent decades, grower Champagne has gained popularity. Consumers are increasingly seeking champagnes that reflect the authenticity, diversity, and individual character of each grower.

The Statuses of Champagne Growers 

Here are the different statuses that define the roles and responsibilities of Champagne professionals: 

-Grower (or Récoltant Manipulant - RM): Growers are grape producers who cultivate their own vines and produce champagne from their own harvests. They are involved in every stage of the process, from growing the grapes to winemaking, and make their cuvées under their own name.

-Cooperative (or Cooperative Winery - CM): Cooperatives bring together several independent growers who deliver their grapes to a shared facility for winemaking. The champagne is made under the cooperative’s name, and each grower may market the champagne produced individually.

-Négociant Manipulant (or Champagne House - NM): Négociant manipulants are champagne houses that do not necessarily own vineyards. They generally purchase grapes, musts, or already-made wines to create their cuvées. These houses are often renowned major houses.

-Cooperative Grower: This is a grower who supplies grapes to a cooperative for winemaking. Although the champagne is produced under the cooperative’s name, the cooperative grower may also market their cuvées under their own name.

-Cooperative Grower-Producer: Some producers may both be grower-producers and supply grapes to a cooperative. This allows them to diversify their production while participating in a collective approach.

-Négociant Brand (MN): Some négociants may create specific brands to market their champagne without using the term "house". These brands may represent special cuvées or distinct ranges.

-Growers’ Association (SR): This is a company made up of several growers who have joined forces to produce and market champagne. Each grower may also produce their own cuvées.

Traditional Method and Champagne Styles

Made from the main grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, Champagne can sometimes be White de Whites (a white wine made exclusively from white grapes, for example 100% Chardonnay, producing an elegant, mineral Champagne), or White de Noirs (a white wine made exclusively from black grapes, for example 100% Pinot Noir, producing a fruitier, fuller-bodied, more vinous Champagne). 

Champagne is made using a technique called the Traditional Method (or Champenoise method), which involves producing a still base wine followed by a second fermentation in the bottle through the addition of a tirage liqueur that creates Champagne’s characteristic natural bubbles. The bottles then undergo an aging process on lees, which contributes to the complexity and richness of the aromas. Finally, after disgorgement, the addition of a dosage liqueur makes it possible, among other things, to adjust the sweetness level of Champagne, ranging from brut champagnes (dry) to doux champagnes (sweet). Here is the classification of Champagne designations from least sweet to sweetest, in grams of sugar per liter. 

  • Non-dosé or Brut Nature: No dosage added.
  • Extra Brut: Even drier than Brut, less than 3g/L.
  • Brut: with a minimal amount of residual sugar, between 4g/L and 12g/L
  • Extra Dry: Very slightly sweet. Between 12 and 17g/L
  • Sec: Slightly sweet. Between 17 and 32g/L
  • Demi-Sec: Sweet. Between 32 and 50g/L
  • Doux: Very sweet and rarely produced nowadays. More than 50g/L
  • If Champagne is a vintage champagne, the production method is even stricter.

Vintage Champagne

Vintage Champagne is made from grapes harvested during an exceptional year. Unlike non-vintage cuvées, often blended from wines from different years to maintain a consistent style, vintage champagnes highlight the specific characteristics of a particular harvest. They are produced only in years when weather conditions have been exceptional, allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. Here are their characteristics: 

Expression of Terroir: Vintage champagnes capture the essence of the terroir of the harvest year, reflecting climatic conditions, grape quality, and the distinctiveness of the soil.

Aging Potential: These champagnes often have greater aging potential due to the exceptional quality of the harvest. They can evolve in complex ways over time, developing deeper aromas and a richer texture.

Selective Blending: Champagne houses carry out meticulous blending to create vintage cuvées, selecting the best lots of still wines from the specific harvest.

Unique Character: Each vintage has its own characteristics, and vintage champagnes allow enthusiasts to taste the distinctiveness of each exceptional year.

Best Champagne Vintages

Champagne has produced exceptional vintages over the decades, each offering unique characteristics and remarkable qualities. Here are some of Champagne’s most exceptional vintages.

20th-Century Champagne Vintages

  • 1928: This vintage is often considered one of the greatest of the 20th century in Champagne. Champagnes from this vintage are rare and sought after for their complexity and elegance.
  • 1945: An exceptional vintage celebrated as the end of World War II. Champagnes from 1945 are rare and prized for their exceptional quality.
  • 1964: This vintage produced balanced and elegant champagnes that have aged well over the years.
  • 1976: A vintage that produced powerful, structured champagnes with remarkable longevity.
  • 1985: This vintage is widely recognized for its quality, with champagnes offering a combination of fruity aromas and mineral character.

Other top vintages include: 1929, 1955, 1990 and 1996

21st-Century Champagne Vintages:

  • 2002: A vintage celebrated for its exceptional quality, with champagnes combining richness, complexity, and freshness.
  • 2008: This vintage produced champagnes distinguished by their balance between acidity and ripeness, as well as their aging potential.
  • 2012: A vintage marked by favorable weather conditions, producing aromatic and well-balanced champagnes.
  • 2018: This vintage was praised for its promising quality, with champagnes showing lovely freshness and an expression of terroir.

Other top vintages include: 2004, and 2005.
