Frequently Asked Questions

Domaine Coche-Dury, based in Meursault, is unanimously recognised as one of the absolute benchmarks of the Côte de Beaune. Jean-François Coche, followed by his son Raphaël, established a style built on very low yields, rigorous viticulture and barrel ageing conducted with rare precision. Their Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne achieve an aromatic complexity and tension that place them at the very pinnacle of the appellation, with an exceptional ageing capacity.

The Meursaults from Domaine Coche-Dury are wines with great aging potential that rarely express their full character before 8 to 12 years after the harvest. The Premiers Crus often demand even greater patience. At maturity, they reveal an aromatic palette of exceptional depth, blending candied citrus, hazelnut, flint, and buttery notes of great elegance. Decanting for one hour is strongly recommended for younger vintages.

Domaine Coche-Dury cultivates around 10 hectares of vines spread across several Côte de Beaune appellations. This deliberately modest size allows for meticulous attention to each plot, with viticulture close to organic practices but without certification. The estate’s philosophy puts terroir expression first: minimal intervention in the cellar, indigenous yeasts and carefully calibrated barrel aging that enhances the fruit without masking it.

Domaine Coche-Dury produces a focused range of appellations in the Côte de Beaune, primarily in white. These include Bourgogne Aligoté, Meursault Villages, several Meursault Premier Cru (including Les Perrières and Les Genevrières), as well as the highly sought-after Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru. The estate also produces a few reds, notably a Volnay Premier Cru and an Auxey-Duresses, more discreet but crafted with equal care.

Among the most remarkable vintages from Domaine Coche-Dury, connoisseurs regularly cite 1992, 1996, 2002, 2010, 2014 and 2017, which combine freshness, density and exemplary balance. The 2019 and 2020 vintages also generate a great deal of enthusiasm for their restrained richness. The domaine's style nevertheless transcends difficult vintages, from which Raphaël Coche so often extracts the best through his work in the vineyard.

While the reputation of Domaine Coche-Dury rests above all on its white wines, its reds deserve far greater attention than their discreet profile might suggest. The Volnay Premier Cru and the Auxey-Duresses rouge are crafted with the same meticulous care as the whites: low yields, precise vinification and masterfully controlled ageing. These wines offer a beautiful expression of Burgundian Pinot Noir, with a natural elegance and drinkability that appeal to enthusiasts in search of the domaine's more confidential gems.

The History of Domaine Coche-Dury

Domaine Coche-Dury traces its roots to the early 20th century, when it was founded by Jean-François Coche’s grandfather. It was not until the 1960s, after the interwar years, that the domaine truly began to flourish. Georges Coche, Jean-François’s father, initiated a radical change by selling wine in bottles rather than in bulk.

In 1975, Jean-François Coche officially took over the family domaine and married Odile Dury, thus establishing Domaine Coche-Dury. He chose to refine the quality of the wines rather than expand the vineyard holdings. This meticulous work brought the domaine worldwide recognition, particularly for its white wines, which represent the purest expression of Chardonnay. In 2010, after spending decades bringing the domaine to the pinnacle of its field, Jean-François passed the torch to his son Raphaël, who continues this pursuit of excellence with distinction.

Domaine Coche-Dury’s Terroirs and Vineyards

The domaine spans 10.5 hectares, 9 of which are in Meursault, one of the most renowned appellations for Chardonnay. In addition to its plots in Meursault, the domaine owns vines in Pommard, Auxey-Duresses, Puligny-Montrachet, and the Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru.

The secret to the quality of Domaine Coche-Dury’s wines lies in its rigorous approach to viticulture. Raphaël Coche, who has led the domaine since 2010, has chosen to return to plowing by hand and to reduce yields, ensuring the concentration and purity of the grapes. Respect for the terroir, combined with the age of the vines—some dating back to the 1950s—gives the domaine’s wines unique depth and complexity.

The domaine is committed to environmentally responsible farming. No pesticides are used, and the soils are plowed to maintain a natural balance. These exemplary viticultural practices help capture the true essence of Burgundy’s terroirs.

Winemaking at Domaine Coche-Dury

Winemaking at Domaine Coche-Dury follows traditional methods, with meticulous attention to detail. After harvest, the grapes are gently pressed to avoid harsh extraction. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, some of which are replaced each year, but not to excess, so the oak does not overpower the wine’s natural aromas.

The white wines are aged on their lees for approximately 18 to 22 months, a process that preserves freshness while developing a rich, complex texture. This lees aging is one of the domaine’s hallmarks, imparting characteristic toasted and mineral notes that are particularly prized in great vintages such as Corton-Charlemagne.

The red wines, though less well known than the whites, are also aged in oak barrels, with a lower proportion of new oak. Made predominantly from Pinot Noir, these wines are elegant, fresh, and balanced, with impressive aging potential.

Here is a list of exceptional vintages to watch for if you enjoy Domaine Coche-Dury wines: 1989, 1992, 1996, 2002, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020…

These vintages are renowned for their quality and their ability to improve with age. Some, such as 1989 and 2010, are considered definitive benchmarks in the domaine’s history.

If you are passionate about wines from Burgundy, other domaines worth discovering include Arnaud Ente, Comtes Lafon, De Montille, Domaine Leflaive, Dujac, Etienne Sauzet, Joseph Drouhin, and Leroy, all known for their exceptional white wines. These domaines share a philosophy of respect for terroir and a constant pursuit of quality, but each offers a unique expression of Chardonnay.

Domaine Coche-Dury is a hidden gem of Burgundy, producing some of the world’s most sought-after wines. Through meticulous viticulture, precise winemaking, and a passion for excellence, the domaine’s wines offer an unparalleled sensory experience. Whether you are a lover of fine white wines or a discerning collector, Domaine Coche-Dury’s wines are essential additions to your cellar.
