Where is the Meursault appellation located?

The appellation is located in Burgundy, in the Côte-d'Or department, entirely within the commune of Meursault, approximately eight kilometres south of Beaune. The vineyard extends over nearly 395 hectares in production, of which approximately 382 hectares are white wines (around one hundred hectares classified as premier cru) and only about twelve hectares are red wines. It occupies a gently sloping hillside, between 230 and 360 metres of altitude, facing east to south, separating the Hautes Côtes plateaux to the west from the Saône plain to the east. To the north, this vineyard borders Volnay and Monthelie, to the west Auxey-Duresses and Blagny, and to the south Puligny-Montrachet and its grands crus, placing the appellation at the nerve centre of the white wines of the Côte de Beaune.

History of the Meursault appellation

The history of these wines begins well before the modern era: as early as 1098, Duke Eudes I of Burgundy gave a vineyard to the Abbey of Cîteaux, whose monks helped to structure the finage. In the 19th century, when fine Burgundy was predominantly red, Meursault stood as an exception and built its reputation on its white wines, as confirmed by the classification established in 1861 by the Beaune Agricultural Committee, which already distinguished Les Perrières, Les Genevrières, Les Charmes and Les Bouchères. The appellation d'origine contrôlée was recognised by the decree of 31 July 1937, and the State drew up in 1943 the list of climats entitled to bear the premier cru designation, directly inherited from that 19th-century classification. The Paulée de Meursault, created in 1932 by Comte Lafon, has durably established the village in the imagination of wine lovers.

What are the terroirs of the Meursault appellation?

The terroirs rest on a Jurassic series ranging from the Bathonian to the Oxfordian, where hard limestones and argillaceous marls alternate, the precise combination of the subsoil explaining the differences in style from one climat to another. The finest plots are found at around 260 metres of altitude, on mid-slope positions, on lean and stony soils: Les Perrières, whose name recalls the old quarries, produces the finest and most saline wines, often considered worthy of a grand cru, while Les Genevrières brings floral finesse and length, Les Charmes roundness and generosity, and Les Gouttes d'Or a more sun-drenched richness. The semi-continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers, preserves the necessary freshness. At village appellation level, lieux-dits such as Les Tessons, Les Narvaux, Les Tillets, Les Chevalières and Les Rougeots now reach a remarkable standard.

Which grape varieties are permitted in the Meursault appellation?

The specifications permit chardonnay and pinot blanc as the main grape varieties for white wines, supplemented since the 2026 revision by aligoté, melon and sacy, limited to 10% of the vine composition and one hectare per holding. In practice, chardonnay alone makes up the whites of the appellation: here it yields grapes capable of achieving fine sugar richness while retaining acidity, hence the marriage of richness and tension that has made the village's reputation. For reds, pinot noir is the principal variety, with an accessory share (chardonnay, pinot blanc, pinot gris known locally as pinot beurot, and césar since 2026) capped at 15%. Here again, winemakers vinify in practice a pure pinot noir.

What are the different styles of Meursault wines?

The appellation produces essentially dry white wines, offered at three levels: village blended cuvées, single-plot village lieux-dits, and premiers crus, to which are added the Meursault-Blagny designation on the higher slopes and rare red wines from pinot noir, supple and spicy. Winemaking follows a classic approach: gentle pressing, settling, fermentation and ageing in Burgundian oak barrels for eleven to eighteen months, on the lees, with batonnage today more measured and the proportion of new oak significantly reduced compared to the 1990s, in order to preserve the terroir's salinity. At the table, these wines pair beautifully with lobster, king prawns, turbot or pike-perch in sauce, sweetbreads, chicken in cream sauce, pan-fried foie gras and blue-veined cheeses, with a well-aged comté particularly revealing their hazelnut register.

What are the best vintages of Meursault?

The benchmark vintages of the last thirty years are 1996, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023. The year 2014 remains a safe choice for whites, with achieved ripeness and frank acidity, while 2010 and 2008 offer the tension sought by collectors. The sunny years (2015, 2018, 2019, 2020) yield rich and demonstrative wines, with 2020 combining concentration and freshness. The April frost severely reduced volumes in 2016 and 2021, two rare vintages that are often very pure, and 2024, marked by rain and mildew, yielded little wine but of preserved quality. 2023 was hailed as a very great year for whites, and 2025 promises to be precise and concentrated. More modest: 2003, 2004, 2011 and 2013. To drink now: 2017, 2018 and 2019. To wait for: 2020, 2022 and 2023.

What are the best estates of the Meursault appellation?

Domaine Coche-Dury is the absolute reference of the village and one of the most sought-after names in the world. Jean-François Coche and then his son Raphaël have established a style of very low yields, ripe harvests and meticulous ageing, across Perrières, Genevrières and Caillerets as well as village lieux-dits such as Les Rougeots and Les Chevalières. The extreme rarity of the bottles makes them prized collector's items. Domaine des Comtes Lafon, farmed biodynamically by Dominique Lafon and then the next generation, embodies the other great reference of the appellation, with the Clos de la Barre monopole around the family home and a series of premiers crus (Perrières, Charmes, Genevrières, Gouttes d'Or, Poruzots) renowned for their controlled density. The family is also at the origin of the Paulée. Domaine Roulot, taken over in 1989 by Jean-Marc Roulot, has redefined modern Meursault: discreet oak, purity and tension. Its village single-plot cuvées (Tessons, Luchets, Tillets, Meix Chavaux, Narvaux) rival premiers crus, with the Clos des Bouchères monopole and Les Perrières forming the summit of the range. Arnaud Ente has established himself as the cult winemaker of the new generation, with meticulous viticulture, old vines and a minuscule production. His cuvées La Sève du Clos and Clos des Ambres, as well as his Goutte d'Or, have become impossible-to-find collector's bottles. Domaine d'Auvenay, owned by Lalou Bize-Leroy, has only a few hectares farmed biodynamically and produces ultra-confidential Meursaults (Les Narvaux, Chaumes des Perrières, Gouttes d'Or premier cru) in runs of a few thousand bottles, among the most expensive white wines on the planet. Bouchard Père & Fils, a great Beaune négociant house founded in the 18th century, holds historic plots in Perrières and nearly two hectares in Genevrières. Its classic style, consistent ageing and availability make it a reliable entry point to the premiers crus. Domaine Pierre Morey, farmed biodynamically by a winemaker who was long the manager of Domaine Leflaive, produces straight and firm wines in their youth, notably in Perrières and in the village lieu-dit Les Tessons, which require patience. Domaine Antoine Jobard perpetuates the reductive and austere style inherited from François Jobard, with long ageing in a cool cellar across Genevrières, Poruzots and Blagny — wines that are understated when young but among the finest keepers in the village. Domaine Latour-Giraud, finally, is the largest owner of Genevrières with 2.5 hectares and offers a wide range of premiers crus at still reasonable prices.

How long should a Meursault wine be aged?

A Meursault village wine generally keeps for between 5 and 10 years, a village lieu-dit from a fine terroir between 8 and 12 years, and a premier cru between 10 and 20 years, with the Perrières and Genevrières from the finest estates regularly exceeding 25 years. The rare red wines are best enjoyed between 5 and 10 years. These ranges assume a stable cellar, between 11 and 13 degrees, protected from light and vibrations, with humidity of around 70% and bottles stored on their sides. Serve these wines between 12 and 13 degrees, never chilled, as excessive cold will mask their texture. Decanting for twenty to thirty minutes benefits young premiers crus, often marked by a protective reduction, while bottles more than fifteen years old simply require opening at the moment of service.
