Located on limestone marl soils at around 260 m in altitude, the finest crus of Meursault are characterized by their mineral notes of flint, aromas of almond and toasted hazelnut, hawthorn, and verbena in their youth. Where is the Meursault appellation located?

The appellation lies in Burgundy’s Côte-d’Or department, entirely within the commune of Meursault, about eight kilometers south of Beaune. The vineyard covers nearly 395 hectares in production, including around 382 hectares of white wines (about 100 hectares classified as premier cru) and only about a dozen hectares of red wines. It occupies a gently sloping hillside between 230 and 360 meters in elevation, facing east to south and separating the Hautes Côtes plateau to the west from the Saône plain to the east. The vineyard borders Volnay and Monthelie to the north, Auxey-Duresses and Blagny to the west, and Puligny-Montrachet and its grands crus to the south. This places the appellation at the heart of the Côte de Beaune’s white-wine country.

History of the Meursault appellation

The history of these wines begins long before the modern era: as early as 1098, Duke Odo I of Burgundy gave a vineyard to Cîteaux Abbey, whose monks helped shape the wine-growing area. In the 19th century, when fine Burgundy was overwhelmingly red, Meursault stood out and built its reputation on white wines. This was confirmed by the classification drawn up in 1861 by the Beaune Agricultural Committee, which already singled out Les Perrières, Les Genevrières, Les Charmes, and Les Bouchères. The appellation d’origine contrôlée was recognized by a decree of July 31, 1937, and in 1943 the French government established the list of climats permitted to bear the premier cru designation, directly inherited from that 19th-century classification. The Paulée de Meursault, founded in 1932 by Count Lafon, firmly established the village in the imagination of wine lovers.

What are the terroirs of the Meursault appellation?

The terroirs lie on Jurassic formations dating from the Bathonian to the Oxfordian, where hard limestone alternates with clay marl. The precise makeup of the subsoil explains the differences in style from one climat to another. The best parcels sit around 260 meters in elevation, halfway up the slope, on thin, stony soils. Les Perrières, whose name recalls the old quarries, produces the finest, most saline wines, often considered worthy of grand cru status. Les Genevrières brings floral finesse and length, Les Charmes roundness and generosity, and Les Gouttes d’Or a richer, more sun-ripened character. The semi-continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers, preserves the necessary freshness. At village level, lieux-dits such as Les Tessons, Les Narvaux, Les Tillets, Les Chevalières, and Les Rougeots now reach a remarkable standard.

Which grape varieties are permitted in the Meursault appellation?

The appellation rules authorize Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc as the principal grapes for white wines. Since the 2026 revision, Aligoté, Melon, and Sacy have also been permitted, limited to 10% of plantings and one hectare per estate. In practice, the appellation’s white wines are made entirely from Chardonnay: here, the grapes can develop generous sugar levels while retaining acidity, creating the combination of richness and tension for which the village is known. For reds, Pinot Noir is the principal grape, with supplementary varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, known locally as Pinot Beurot, and César since 2026) capped at 15%. Here, too, winemakers in practice make wines from Pinot Noir alone.

What are the different styles of Meursault wine?

The appellation produces mainly dry white wines at three levels: village blends, single-vineyard village wines, and premiers crus. There is also the Meursault-Blagny designation on the higher slopes, along with a small number of supple, spicy Pinot Noir reds. Winemaking follows a classic pattern: gentle pressing, settling, fermentation, and aging on the lees in Burgundian oak barrels for eleven to eighteen months. Bâtonnage is now more restrained, and the proportion of new oak is markedly lower than in the 1990s, helping preserve the terroir’s salinity. At the table, these wines pair with lobster, large prawns, turbot or pikeperch in sauce, sweetbreads, chicken in cream sauce, pan-seared foie gras, and blue cheeses. Aged Comté brings out their hazelnut notes particularly well.

What are the best Meursault vintages?

The benchmark vintages of the past thirty years are 1996, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023. 2014 remains a reliable choice for whites, with full ripeness and lively acidity, while 2010 and 2008 offer the tension collectors seek. Warm, sunny years (2015, 2018, 2019, 2020) produce rich, expressive wines, with 2020 combining concentration and freshness. April frost sharply reduced volumes in 2016 and 2021, two rare but often very pure vintages. Marked by rain and downy mildew, 2024 yielded little wine, though quality held up. 2023 was hailed as an outstanding year for whites, while 2025 looks set to be precise and concentrated. More modest vintages: 2003, 2004, 2011, and 2013. Drink now: 2017, 2018, and 2019. Hold: 2020, 2022, and 2023.

What are the best estates in the Meursault appellation?

Domaine Coche-Dury is the village’s definitive benchmark and one of the most sought-after names in the world. Jean-François Coche and then his son Raphaël established a style built on very low yields, ripe grapes at harvest, and precisely judged aging, in Perrières, Genevrières, and Caillerets as well as village lieux-dits such as Les Rougeots and Les Chevalières. The extreme rarity of the bottles makes them prized by collectors. Domaine des Comtes Lafon, run biodynamically by Dominique Lafon and then the next generation, is the appellation’s other major benchmark. Its holdings include the monopole Clos de la Barre around the family home and a series of premiers crus (Perrières, Charmes, Genevrières, Gouttes d’Or, Poruzots) renowned for their controlled density. The family also founded the Paulée. Domaine Roulot, taken over by Jean-Marc Roulot in 1989, redefined modern Meursault with restrained oak, purity, and tension. Its single-vineyard village wines (Tessons, Luchets, Tillets, Meix Chavaux, Narvaux) rival premiers crus, while the monopole Clos des Bouchères and Perrières sit at the top of the range. Arnaud Ente has become a cult winemaker of the new generation, known for meticulous viticulture, old vines, and tiny production. His La Sève du Clos and Clos des Ambres cuvées, like his Goutte d’Or, have become nearly impossible-to-find collector’s bottles. Domaine d’Auvenay, owned by Lalou Bize-Leroy, has just a few hectares farmed biodynamically and produces exceptionally scarce Meursault wines (Les Narvaux, Chaumes des Perrières, Gouttes d’Or premier cru), with only a few thousand bottles made. They rank among the world’s most expensive white wines. Bouchard Père & Fils, a major Beaune-based house founded in the 18th century, owns historic parcels in Perrières and nearly two hectares in Genevrières. Its classic style, consistent aging, and availability make it a reliable introduction to the premiers crus. Domaine Pierre Morey, farmed biodynamically by a winemaker who was long the manager of Domaine Leflaive, produces focused, firm wines in their youth, notably from Perrières and the lieu-dit Les Tessons, that reward patience. Domaine Antoine Jobard carries on the reductive, austere style inherited from François Jobard, with long aging in a cool cellar for wines from Genevrières, Poruzots, and Blagny. Understated when young, they are among the village’s longest-lived wines. Finally, Domaine Latour-Giraud is the largest landowner in Genevrières, with 2.5 hectares, and offers a broad range of premiers crus at still-reasonable prices.

How long can you cellar a Meursault wine?

A village-level Meursault generally keeps for 5 to 10 years, a single-vineyard village wine from a great terroir for 8 to 12 years, and a premier cru for 10 to 20 years. Perrières and Genevrières from the best estates regularly exceed 25 years. The rare red wines are best enjoyed within 5 to 10 years. These ranges assume a stable cellar at 11 to 13 degrees, away from light and vibrations, with around 70% humidity and bottles stored on their sides. Serve these wines at 12 to 13 degrees, never ice-cold, which would mask their texture. Young premiers crus, often marked by protective reduction, benefit from twenty to thirty minutes in a decanter, while bottles over fifteen years old need only be opened when served.
