A must-try in Gevrey Chambertin
The wines of Domaine Jean Louis Trapet
Created in 1919, the Domaine Trapet estate, which is surrounded by famous estates such as Domaine Rousseau or Domaine Dugat, covers almost 16 hectares, of which nearly 1.2 hectares are reserved for the white Burgundy wines. The vines are planted on limestone and clay-limestone soils and have been cultivated according to the biodynamic principles since 1995.
Three Grands Crus are produced by the Domaine Jean Louis Trapet: Chambertin, Chapelle Chambertin and Latricieres Chambertin. The 2014 vintage of Chambertin is particularly appreciated by critics, especially by the RVF guide which gave it an excellent 19.5/20 (18/20 for Bettane & Desseauve). This wine is build to last thanks to the partially whole-bunches winemaking method used, which give the wine its greatness and will make it perfect for ageing. Its aging potential is over 20 years. The best vintages are 2015, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2002: these are fairly straight and pure wines that require time to reach their best. The Grand cru Latricieres Chambertin 2014 is considered to be a great powerful wine, an infusion of Pinot noir. It is a fine, distinguished, elegant and mineral wine. There are also 3 Gevrey Chambertin Premiers crus: Le Clos Prieur, La Petite Chapelle and Le Capita. The latter is a wine made of 100% whole-bunches. This is a very dynamic, powerful wine, of slow construction: it therefore has good ageing potential of more than 10 years. The only white wine produced by the estate is a Marsannay. The 2014 vintage was acclaimed and described as a wine with a beautiful texture very well balanced, with hazelnut notes. It got a good 14.5/20 mark from Bettane & Desseauve.
