Attention: an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux in 2005! A superb spring, a magnificent summer, and ideal weather conditions during the harvest — producers could not have dreamt of better. The 2005 vintage is characterised by the richness and structure of the red wines, both achieved through slow and steady ripening (as is often the case in great Bordeaux vintages). However, the Bordeaux red wines will require patience, as they are still very tannic and do not have the early approachability of the wines of the 1982 vintage or the wines of the 1990 vintage.

You’ll need to know when to drink them after years in the cellar, as their aging potential seems enormous. Time will tell whether the 2005 Médoc classified growths live up to their exceptional reputation. The appellations farther south (Margaux 2005, Graves 2005) and on the Right Bank (Pomerol 2005 and Saint Emilion 2005) seem approachable sooner thanks to their exuberant fruit. Bordeaux’s dry white wines from 2005 are very successful. The Sauternes 2005 wines are excellent and powerful, though they lean more toward roasted and candied flavors than the 2001 vintage. In Burgundy, the 2005 wines are also very good, with the edge going to red Burgundy wines. Conditions were ideal for producing a great 2005 vintage, but the reds are tannic and closed, and the 2005 Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines will require more patience before you can enjoy them. Many 2005 red Grand Crus will probably reach 20 years of age—or more—before showing their best. Among white Burgundies, 2005 produced a rich, full-bodied vintage, and the Côte de Beaune wines (Meursault 2005, Puligny Montrachet 2005) should be opened before the reds. The 2005 vintage is highly successful and more approachable in Chablis 2005. Champagne produced a fairly good vintage, though it can sometimes lack a little freshness. The Rhône Valley produced great red wines in the Côte-Rôtie 2005 and Hermitage 2005 appellations: dense and powerful wines. In the Southern Rhône Valley, Châteauneuf du Pape 2005 and Gigondas 2005 are excellent, with strong aging potential. The Loire Valley had very little rainfall in 2005, and both its red and white wines turned out very well. In Alsace, Riesling ripening stalled on lighter soils, while 2005 favored Pinot Noir and late-harvest wines. Excellent Cahors 2005 wines came from Southwest France (le Cèdre).

In Burgundy, some great 2005 wines include Chablis Les Clos 2005 from Domaine Vincent Dauvissat, Musigny 2005 (Domaine Jacques Prieur), Clos de la Roche 2005 (Domaine Hubert Lignier) and Chambertin 2005 (Domaine Trapet). From the Rhône Valley: Rayas 2005, Côte Rôtie 2005 from Jamet or Beaucastel 2005. In Alsace, there’s Altenberg de Bergheim 2005 from Deiss; and why not a 2005 Comtesse white Sancerre from Boulay or a Clos Rougeard 2005 from the Loire …
