Cornas

All wines from the Cornas appellation in the Rhône Valley

Covering approximately 145 hectares in the commune of Cornas, in Ardèche, the southernmost appellation of the Northern Côtes du Rhône flourishes on steep granite slopes, south-facing, producing robust and tannic wines with rich notes of black fruits, spices, and minerals. Established in 1938, the Cornas appellation produces around 4,500 hectolitres per year, with strict limits of 45 hl/ha to guarantee quality. Known for their powerful structure and ageing potential, Cornas wines rival Hermitage while offering a distinctly rustic character. Its flagship producers are Jean-Luc Colombo, Thierry Allemand, Domaine Courbis, and Eric and Joël Durand.

Where is the Cornas appellation located?

The appellation is located in Ardèche, on the right bank of the Rhône, directly opposite the city of Valence, and is limited to the sole territory of the commune of Cornas. It belongs to the crus of the northern Côtes du Rhône, of which it constitutes the most southerly for red wines, nestled between Saint-Péray to the south — reserved for whites — and Saint-Joseph to the north. Hermitage lies twelve kilometres away, on the other side of the river.

The vineyard is arranged as a vast amphitheatre broadly open to the south and sheltered from northerly winds by the Arlettes massif, at altitudes ranging from approximately 130 to 400 metres. It covers barely 160 hectares for an average production of close to 5,000 hectoliters, making it one of the smallest appellations in the valley. The often very steep slopes rule out any mechanisation and require work on foot, on narrow terraces supported by dry-stone walls.

History of the Cornas appellation

The history of this cru dates back at least to Antiquity, with Pliny and Plutarch attesting to a two-thousand-year-old viticulture in this portion of the Allobrogian territory. The oldest written record concerning this specific site dates to the year 1000, with the mention of a vine donated to a canon in the cartulary of the Abbey of Saint-Chaffre du Monastier. Until 1461, with the Rhône forming a border, these wines were distributed inland by muletiers, serving as a medium of exchange for grain from the Velay and Auvergne.

The annexation of the Dauphiné to France and then the opening of the Canal de Briare finally opened up the Parisian market, and flattering accounts multiplied: Horace-Bénédict de Saussure wrote in the eighteenth century of the reputation of this deep red wine, the Comte de Tournon, prefect of Rome, had cases shipped all the way to Italy, and a journal of 1877 placed it among the elite of the great fine wines of the Rhône. After the recognition of the Côtes du Rhône AOC in November 1937, the winemakers swiftly obtained their own appellation by the decree of August 5, 1938, under the impetus of mayor F. Michel, oenologist H. Astruc, and Baron Le Roy. The first bottling by a private cellar did not take place until 1952, with the local négociant trade dominating until then; there are today around sixty independent winemakers, and a wine market is held in the village every first weekend of December since 1956.

What are the terroirs of the Cornas appellation?

The terroirs rest essentially on the weathering of primary eruptive rocks — the porphyritic granites of Tournon — which give rise to those characteristic light sandy arenas. These poor, well-draining, and warm soils must be held in place on the slopes by successive terraces, locally known as chaillées, whose upkeep represents a constant task for the winemaking community. To the north of the commune, a fragment of compact limestone from the Arlettes massif has released scree, found notably in the Pied-la-Vigne quarter, but this portion concerns only a tiny part of the delimited area.

At the foot of the slope, on more alluvial soils, the plots widen and yield more supple wines; more recently, the vine has conquered the hills situated above 250 metres, which today contribute a precious freshness. The microclimate may even explain the very name of the commune, linked to a Celtic root meaning burnt land: this heat and natural shelter allow for early ripening, so much so that the harvest there often begins a week before that of Hermitage. The most reputed named plots — Reynard, Chaillot, La Côte, Sabarotte, Les Mazards, La Geynale, and Patou — regularly appear on the labels.

What grape varieties are authorized in the Cornas appellation?

Only one grape variety is authorized: syrah, with no possibility of blending or co-planting with white varieties, which sets this cru apart from all other reds of the northern Rhône. Known locally as plant de l'Ermitage, and as serine in Ampuis, it has been at home here for centuries and finds in the warm granite of the amphitheatre one of its most complete expressions.

On these granitic sands, syrah delivers a deep colour, aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, black olive, violet, pepper, and smoke, along with a dense tannic framework that polishes with time. The specifications strictly govern production: minimum planting density of 4,400 vines per hectare, training on individual stakes or on a raised trellis system, yield set at 40 hectoliters per hectare, harvest compulsorily by hand and transported as whole bunches, prohibition of wood chips and any thermal treatment of the harvest above 40 °C.

What are the different styles of Cornas wines?

Only one colour is produced — red — but two schools have coexisted since the 1990s. The traditional approach, embodied by the historic families, favours whole-bunch or partially destemmed harvests, long macerations, indigenous yeasts, aging in old foudres or demi-muids without new wood, and reduced sulphur: it produces wines that are austere in their youth, deeply coloured and wild, and that require time. The so-called modern school, which emerged under the influence of oenologists from Provence and Bordeaux, destemms entirely, extracts more gently, and ages in new barriques, producing wines that are more velvety and accessible early on.

In both cases, structure remains the hallmark: an almost black colour evolving toward amber glints, abundant tannins, remarkable length, and a smoky, peppery character that enriches itself with leather, undergrowth, and truffle after a decade. Release may only take place in glass bottles. As for food pairings, these wines call for dishes of character: côte de bœuf, lamb roasted with thyme, daube, feathered or furred game, hare civet, duck breast, but also an Ardèche caillette or a well-ripened saint-marcellin with more evolved vintages.

What are the best vintages of Cornas?

The benchmark vintages of the past thirty years are those that combined full ripeness and freshness — a demanding combination for a syrah planted on warm granite. 1999, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2022 stand as solid references, with 2010 and 2016 standing out as peaks for their balance between density and tension, 2015 and 2019 for their solar power, and 2001 and 2005 for their classicism now fully expressed.

The more challenging years call for careful selection by the producer: 2002, marked by exceptional rainfall; 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2014, more irregular; 2003, crushed by the heatwave; as well as 2018, 2021, and 2024, where downy mildew, frost, or coulure weighed on volumes. In practical terms, the young-vine cuvées from the 2020 to 2023 vintages are already opening up nicely with decanting, while the great cuvées from 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2022 still merit five to ten more years in the cellar to reveal their true dimension.

What are the best estates of the Cornas appellation?

Domaine Auguste Clape stands as the absolute benchmark and custodian of the traditional style. Established at the heart of the village, the family farms only a few hectares, spread across Reynard, La Côte, Sabarotte, Les Mazards, and Patou, vinified as whole bunches and aged in old foudres without a trace of new wood. Auguste Clape was one of the first to bottle his own production in the 1950s and to champion the appellation when it was still largely unknown; his successors perpetuate a flagship cuvée of very long aging potential, complemented by Renaissance, from the younger vines. Thierry Allemand embodies the other living legend of the cru: starting from nothing in the early 1980s by clearing abandoned terraces, having trained with Robert Michel, he produces on a minuscule surface two cuvées that have become mythical — Chaillot and Reynard — vinified with very little sulphur and sold in strict allocations at grand cru prices.

Domaine Alain Voge, founded at the turn of the 1960s by a family present since the beginning of the twentieth century, was one of the artisans of the village's qualitative revival. Converted to biodynamics and today directed by a team from the Chapoutier house, it offers high-calibre cuvées, notably Les Vieilles Fontaines, from own-rooted vines, and Les Vieilles Vignes. Vincent Paris, nephew of Robert Michel, has taken on part of the family heritage and signs with La Geynale — born from century-old vines — one of the finest quality-to-price ratios in the appellation, alongside his cuvées Granit 30 and Granit 60, named after the inclination of the slopes. Jean-Luc Colombo, an oenologist who arrived in the 1980s, shook up established practices by destemming and aging in new oak: his cuvée Les Ruchets, from old vines, remains the emblem of the modern school, and his influence across the entire valley is undeniable.

The domaine du Tunnel, founded in 1994 by Stéphane Robert, has risen within a generation to become one of the sure values, with cuvées such as Vin Noir and Pur Noir, dense and perfectly defined. Franck Balthazar, who took over the family estate in the early 2000s, cultivates plots of ungrafted old vines at Chaillot and vinifies with whole bunches, with very little intervention, in a resolutely classical spirit. Finally, Guillaume Gilles, who took over in 2007 a portion of Robert Michel's vines, produces just a few thousand bottles, using whole-bunch harvesting and aging in old foudres: a confidential signature, highly sought after by lovers of northern syrah without embellishment.

How long should a Cornas wine be kept?

The aging potential is among the longest in the northern Rhône. An entry-level cuvée or one from young vines is best enjoyed between four and eight years, the time needed for its tannins to soften. The main cuvées from good estates require a minimum of five years in bottle and come into their own between eight and twenty years, while the great single-vineyard cuvées from the finest vintages can easily hold twenty-five to thirty years, developing notes of leather, truffle, liquorice, and undergrowth on a colour that has shifted to amber garnet.

A cellar kept at a stable temperature between 10 and 14 °C, at around 70% humidity, away from light and vibrations, with bottles lying on their sides, remains essential to accompany this slow evolution. When serving, a young wine benefits from one to two hours of decanting, given its compact structure in the early years, and is best enjoyed at around 16 °C. Bottles more than fifteen years old, often carrying significant sediment, should on the contrary be decanted with care just before the meal — stood upright the day before — to preserve tertiary aromas that have by then become delicate.
