Hermitage

All wines from the Hermitage appellation in the Rhône Valley

Hermitage is the most prestigious appellation of the Northern Rhône Valley, situated on a hillside overlooking the Rhône, and extending over 337 acres. The combination of heat-retaining granitic soil and the vineyard's south-facing exposure allows for excellent ripening of the grapes, made from Syrah for red wines and Roussanne and Marsanne for white wines, the finest of which come from the highest vineyards on more clay-limestone soils. Yields are limited to 40 hl/ha and among the most renowned climats are Les Bessards, Le Méal, Les Greffieux, Les Diognières. The red wines are heady, opulent and very structured, with aging potential of over 30 years, while the whites, low in acidity, display notes of almonds, walnuts, white flowers, saffron and spices. Hermitage is the official spelling of the AOC, Ermitage a historical or stylistic variant for the same prestigious Rhône wines.

Where is the Hermitage appellation located?

The appellation is located in the Drôme, in the northern Rhône Valley, on the left bank of the river, approximately sixteen kilometres upstream from Valence and directly opposite Tournon-sur-Rhône. It occupies a single hill, oriented due south, shared between three communes: Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage. The claimed surface area is around 135 hectares, of which nearly 98 are planted to red varieties and 37 to white, making it one of the smallest crus in France, entirely enclosed within the Crozes-Hermitage area. This vineyard faces Saint-Joseph on the opposite bank and is situated midway between Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu to the north and Cornas and Saint-Péray to the south. Its terraces supported by dry-stone walls were recognised as a classified national heritage site in 2013.

History of the Hermitage appellation

The history of this hill dates back to Antiquity, with the wines of Vienne already renowned in the Gallo-Roman era, but its name comes from a medieval legend: that of the knight Gaspard de Stérimberg who, returning wounded from the crusade against the Albigensians around 1224, is said to have obtained permission to live as a hermit on the heights and to plant the vine there. His chapel still crowns the hillside. From the 18th to the 19th century, these wines ranked among the most expensive in Europe, exported to England and Russia, to the point that Bordeaux wines were "hermitage-ised" to strengthen them. As early as 1816, André Jullien classified the reds, whites and straw wines of the hill in the first category. The Tain agricultural syndicate was established in 1890, the cooperative cellar in 1933, and the decree of 4 March 1937 consecrated the appellation d'origine contrôlée, following the judgement of the Valence tribunal in June 1936.

What are the terroirs of the Hermitage appellation?

The terroirs rest on a bedrock of granitic sands laid over gneiss and micaschists, covered in places by loess, clays and pockets of rounded pebbles inherited from the ancient terraces of the Rhône. This mosaic explains the personality of each sector. To the west, Les Bessards, granitic and very steep, provide the structure, tannins and longevity of the greatest reds, while L'Ermite, at the summit near the chapel, brings finesse and minerality. In the centre, Le Méal, facing due south on its pebbles, produces the most solar and fleshy wines, whereas Les Greffieux, lower down, adds perfume and generosity. To the east, Les Rocoules, Chante-Alouette, Les Murets and Les Diognières, more argilo-calcareous and less steep, constitute the great terroir for the whites. The microclimate, very warm and ventilated by the mistral, completes the picture.

Which grape varieties are permitted in the Hermitage appellation?

The specifications permit syrah for the red wines, with the possibility of adding up to 15% marsanne and roussanne through co-fermentation, an ancient practice that has become very rare today. Syrah finds here one of its historic expressions: it yields wines of intense colour, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, violet and pepper, endowed with a tight tannic framework that calls for years of cellaring. The white wines combine marsanne, the largely dominant variety, which brings richness, volume and notes of almond, lime blossom and honey, and roussanne, finer and more taut, which adds freshness and a floral palette. The appellation also retains the right to produce a straw wine from these white varieties, a rarity vinified from dried grapes.

What are the different styles of Hermitage wines?

The appellation produces three styles: red wines from syrah, which account for approximately three quarters of production, white wines from marsanne and roussanne, and very rare sweet straw wines. Two schools coexist for reds: the tradition of blending, which combines the structure of Les Bessards with the flesh of Le Méal and the perfume of Les Greffieux to compose a complete wine, and the parcel selection, popularised since the 1990s, which isolates the great lieux-dits into separate cuvées. Winemaking favours long but measured extractions, followed by ageing of twelve to eighteen months in large barrels and bariques. At the table, the reds call for côte de bœuf, roasted lamb, hare civet, feathered game and aged cheeses, with truffles pairing particularly well with them. The whites accompany lobster, creamed poultry, sweetbreads and river fish.

Which are the best vintages of Hermitage?

The reference vintages of the last thirty years are 1995, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2022. The year 2010 stands as the modern benchmark, combining concentration and freshness, while 2015 offers power and volume, and 2016 seduces with its aromatic finesse and classical character. The vintages 2018 and 2020 yield rich and generous wines, 2019 stands out for the quality of the syrah, and 2022, sunny yet balanced, promises to be a great success for the region. Conversely, 2002, 2008, 2011 and 2014, affected by rain, remain lighter. 2021, cooler in character, delivered taut but less powerful wines, 2023 proved uneven and 2024, challenging due to record rainfall and mildew, demands careful selection. The 2025 vintage, early and of small volume, is described on the hill as exceptional. To drink now: 2011, 2014 and 2017. To keep: 2019, 2020 and 2022.

Which are the best estates in the Hermitage appellation?

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is the absolute benchmark of the hill and one of the oldest winemaking lineages in France, with the family cultivating the vine from father to son since 1481 and purchasing its first parcels in Hermitage in 1865. Across some fifteen hectares spread across the finest lieux-dits, Jean-Louis Chave perpetuates the art of blending and produces a red and a white that rank among the most sought-after wines in the world, complemented in the very greatest years by the cuvée Cathelin, which has become legendary. The house M. Chapoutier, established in Tain since 1808, is the largest owner of the cru with around thirty hectares farmed biodynamically. In the 1990s it pioneered the fashion for parcel selections with Le Pavillon, sourced from Les Bessards, L'Ermite, Le Méal and Les Greffieux, as well as the white De l'Orée, all receiving top scores from the international press. Paul Jaboulet Aîné, founded in 1834, has owned the Saint-Christophe chapel since 1919 and gave its name to the cuvée La Chapelle, arguably the most famous Hermitage of the 20th century, whose 1961 is among the most sought-after bottles in history. Taken over in 2006 by the Frey family, the house converted its vineyard to organic practices and has returned to a very high level. E. Guigal, the giant of Côte-Rôtie, established itself on the hill by acquiring in 2001 the vines of Jean-Louis Grippat and de Vallouit. The house produces Ex-Voto there, in both red and white, a cuvée made only in great vintages, aged for an extended period in new barrels and rapidly becoming a collector's item. Delas Frères, owned by the Champagne house Louis Roederer, cultivates fine parcels at the heart of the cru and offers two reference cuvées, Les Bessards, austere and mineral in its youth, and Domaine des Tourettes, more approachable, which provide one of the best quality-to-price ratios in the appellation. Ferraton Père et Fils, a house associated with Chapoutier and farmed biodynamically, also produces parcel selections, notably Le Méal and Les Miaux, with a precise style and wider distribution. The Cave de Tain, created in 1933 on the initiative of Louis Gambert de Loche, works a significant portion of the hillside and offers, with its cuvée Gambert de Loche sourced from old vines, a serious and consistent Hermitage at a reasonable price. Finally, Domaine Marc Sorrel is the village's small cult producer: a few thousand bottles only, including the cuvée Le Gréal, born of Les Greffieux and Le Méal, and the white Les Rocoules, vinified in a very traditional spirit that demands patience.

How long should a Hermitage wine be kept?

A red Hermitage generally keeps for between 10 and 25 years, with the great parcel-selection cuvées and reference vintages such as 1990, 2010 or 2015 effortlessly exceeding 30 to 40 years. The whites, often underestimated, are enjoyable in their first three years, then close down for a long unrewarding phase, before reopening after around ten years and living comfortably for 20 to 30 years. Straw wines keep for several decades. These durations assume a stable cellar, between 12 and 14 degrees, dark, with a humidity level close to 70% and bottles stored on their sides. Serve the reds between 16 and 18 degrees, the whites between 12 and 14 degrees. Decanting for one to three hours is strongly recommended for young reds that are still closed, while a bottle of twenty years or more should be gently decanted at the moment of serving, solely to remove the sediment.
