The Côtes du Rhône appellation covers the production of red, white and rosé wines from the Rhône Valley region. After Bordeaux, it is the largest controlled appellation region in France and produces about 4 million hectoliters of wines, 95% red. It is divided into 2 distinct regions. The Northern Côtes du Rhône, the most prestigious, includes the appellations Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, and is known for the quality and longevity of its wines. Its climate is continental, its steep slopes are mostly granitic, and the grape varieties used are Syrah for reds and Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne for whites. The Southern Côtes du Rhône, the most extensive, produces Côtes du Rhône AC, Côtes du Rhône Villages AC for the highest quality, and communal appellations, the most famous of which is Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its climate is Mediterranean, its soils more stony, and the grape varieties used more numerous. Grenache, 65% of the planted vineyard, is the most important, followed by Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and many other local varieties. White wine production, marginal, comes from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Muscat and Viognier.

The TOP appellation of Rhône

Where is the Côtes du Rhône appellation located?

The appellation is located in the Rhône Valley, between Vienne in the north and Avignon in the south, on both banks of the river. The geographical area covers approximately 170 communes spread across six departments: Ardèche, Drôme, Gard, Loire, Rhône and Vaucluse. It includes names as celebrated as Ampuis, Condrieu, Tain-l'Hermitage and Cornas in the northern part, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Cairanne, Rasteau, Vaison-la-Romaine, Laudun and Tavel in the southern part, by far the most productive.

This vineyard represents nearly 30,000 hectares in production for more than 1.2 million hectoliters declared each year, worked by more than a thousand individual estates and some sixty cooperative cellars. It forms the base of a pyramid that rises to the Côtes du Rhône Villages, spread across 95 communes and complemented where applicable by one of 22 geographical denominations, and then to the seventeen crus, from Côte-Rôtie to Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

History of the Côtes du Rhône appellation

The history of this vineyard begins with the Greek colonists, who probably brought the first vines six centuries before our era, and then with the Romans, who planted vines on the hillsides and established vast agricultural estates. In the northern part, the Allobroges gave birth to the vineyard of Vienne as early as the 1st century BC, and Pliny the Elder already praised the reputation of their wine. The river, a major trade route, very early ensured the commerce of barrels northward and toward the Mediterranean.

The name appears in the 15th century, within the boundaries of the old civil diocese of Uzès, where vines were reserved for well-exposed slopes. As early as 1615, planting restrictions protected quality and a harvest date was set each year. In 1737, a decree of the Conseil d'État required the letters CDR and the vintage year to be branded onto the barrels of about ten communes around Roquemaure, in order to prevent fraud: this is one of the first systems of origin protection in France. In 1864, the agronomist Jules Guyot used the plural Côtes du Rhône in his report commissioned by Napoleon III, and the appellation d'origine contrôlée was officially recognized by the decree of 19 November 1937, making it one of the very first French AOCs.

What are the terroirs of the Côtes du Rhône appellation?

The terroirs are characterized by their diversity, a legacy of an eventful geological history: during the Tertiary era, the valley was a Mediterranean fjord extending as far as Vienne, leaving a succession of sedimentary basins that Quaternary erosion subsequently sculpted into hillsides and terraces. Three broad soil families can be distinguished: fluvial terraces covered with rounded pebbles, which give back at night the heat absorbed during the day; marls and soft limestones, which bring freshness and finesse; and sands, sandstones and molasses from erosion, favorable to the most elegant wines.

The climate is Mediterranean in the south, with hot, dry summers, and temperate continental in the north, with rainfall concentrated in autumn and late winter. The mistral, which blows on average one hundred and twenty days per year, plays a decisive role: it dries out the bunches and protects the vine from fungal diseases, clears the sky and ensures more than 2,500 hours of sunshine annually, while also concentrating the grapes. The summer water deficit naturally curbs vigor and concentrates the juice, which explains the characteristic generosity of these wines.

Which grape varieties are authorized in the Côtes du Rhône appellation?

The authorized grape varieties number around twenty, making this appellation one of the richest in France in that regard. For reds and rosés, grenache noir, syrah and mourvèdre are the principal varieties, complemented by carignan, cinsaut, counoise, vaccarèse, muscardin, terret noir and marselan. Grenache must account for at least 30% of the encépagement south of the Montélimar parallel, while syrah and mourvèdre together must make up a minimum of 20%.

For whites, the principal varieties are clairette, grenache blanc, bourboulenc, marsanne, roussanne and viognier, accompanied by piquepoul blanc and ugni blanc. Each makes its contribution: grenache provides ripe red fruit, body and warmth; syrah provides color, pepper and structure; mourvèdre provides the tannic framework and notes of leather; cinsaut provides finesse. Reds are produced from a blend of at least two principal varieties, of which grenache is obligatory in the south; short pruning in gobelet or Royat cordon training remains the rule and the yield is set at 51 hectoliters per hectare.

What are the different styles of Côtes du Rhône wines?

Three colors are produced, in very contrasting styles depending on the soils and the winemaker's choices. Reds, by far the majority, range from supple, crunchy fruit wines born from sandy or silty soils and vinified in tank for early drinking, to dense, tannic cuvées from pebble terraces or clay soils, aged in large casks or demi-muids and built for keeping. Rosés, around 4% of production, appeal through their fruitiness and floral notes, while whites, showing clear qualitative progress, offer roundness, aromas of white flowers, fennel and sometimes exotic fruits.

The primeur or nouveau designation, reserved for reds and rosés, allows release to market from the third Thursday of November. In terms of food pairings, lighter reds accompany charcuterie, grilled meats, pizzas and vegetable tians; the more structured cuvées call for a Provençal daube, a leg of lamb with herbs, a magret, a game stew or a pressed cheese. Whites pair well with bouillabaisse, brandade, creamed poultry or goat's cheeses, and rosés are wonderful with a salade niçoise or spiced cuisine.

What are the best vintages of the Côtes du Rhône?

The reference vintages of the past thirty years follow above all the success of grenache in the southern part. 1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2022 are the safe bets, with 2010 and 2016 standing as peaks for their rare combination of ripeness and freshness, and 2007 and 2019 for their solar generosity. 2017 yielded very concentrated wines but in volumes reduced by drought.

More difficult years call for careful selection from the producer: 2002, marked by torrential rains, 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2014, more irregular, 2018 and 2024, tested by heavy downy mildew pressure, as well as 2021, reduced by spring frost but capable of producing fresh, digestible wines. Concretely, the entry-level cuvées from the 2022 and 2023 vintages are ready to drink now, while the single-parcel selections from 2019, 2020 and 2022 still merit a few more years in the cellar.

What are the best estates of the Côtes du Rhône appellation?

The most sought-after wine of the appellation is without doubt Château de Fonsalette, the property of the Reynaud family, who also head the legendary Château Rayas. Nestled in Lagarde-Paréol, amid the woods, this estate produces under the simple Côtes du Rhône label reds of a stunning depth and longevity, including a Cuvée Syrah that has become a collector's item, as well as an extremely rare white: the prices achieved at auction surpass those of many crus. Le Coudoulet de Beaucastel, signed by the Perrin family, plays a comparable role as a flagship wine: from vines planted on rounded pebbles directly opposite Château de Beaucastel, it is often presented as the little brother of the celebrated châteauneuf, with the same blend of grenache, mourvèdre, syrah and cinsaut.

Maison E. Guigal, established in Ampuis since 1946, occupies a unique position: its Côtes du Rhône rouge, aged eighteen months in large casks and assembled from dozens of plots, has become the most widely distributed reference in the world and the ambassador of the Rhône style to several generations of wine lovers. Domaine Gramenon, founded in 1979 in Montbrison-sur-Lez, in the Drôme, embodies by contrast the discreet and pioneering path: farmed biodynamically and vinified without artifice, it offers cult cuvées such as La Sagesse or the Ceps Centenaires, which have greatly inspired the natural wine revival in France. Le Domaine de la Janasse, in Courthézon, presents with Les Garrigues a pure old-vine grenache regularly rated at the level of the neighboring grands crus.

Clos du Caillou, also in Courthézon, cultivates plots that remained outside the Châteauneuf-du-Pape area for historical reasons linked to an old game reserve, which allows it to produce, under the Côtes du Rhône label, wines such as Le Bouquet des Garrigues or Les Quartz of exceptional density. Domaine Charvin, in Orange, led by Laurent Charvin, offers a Côtes du Rhône of fruit purity and integrity praised by the entire international press. Château de Saint Cosme, in Gigondas, applies to its cuvée Les Deux Albion the expertise of a family present on the estate for centuries. Finally, Domaine Marcel Richaud, in Cairanne, remains a reference for lovers of vibrant, sapid and minimally interventionist wines.

How long should a Côtes du Rhône wine be kept?

The ageing potential depends on the level of the appellation and the style of the cuvée. An entry-level red, vinified for fruit, is ideally drunk within two to four years, and primeur versions within six months of the harvest. More ambitious cuvées, from old vines or from gravel terraces and aged under wood, blossom between five and ten years, while the finest single-parcel selections from the estates mentioned above hold for fifteen years and more in solar vintages. Whites are enjoyed between one and four years, the finest reaching six to eight years, and rosés within the year following the harvest.

A stable cellar between 10 and 14 °C, at around 70% humidity, sheltered from light and vibrations, with bottles lying on their sides, effectively protects against the thermal shocks to which these generous wines are sensitive. When serving, young reds benefit from being served at around 15 to 16 °C, with thirty to sixty minutes of decanting releasing their fruit and softening the perception of alcohol. Bottles more than ten years old should be decanted gently just before the meal to separate the sediment, while whites and rosés are served chilled, between 10 and 12 °C.
