The wines of the Haut Medoc, Bordeaux
The Haut Medoc (4,700 ha) is the southern part of Medoc, which northwest of Bordeaux, runs along the Gironde estuary. It includes the prestigious municipalities of Saint Estephe, Pauillac, Saint Julien, and Margaux, as well as Listrac and Moulis. The red wines produced in this area, apart from the ones mentionned hereinabove, qualify for the regional Haut Medoc PDO.The Haut Medoc red wines are dark ruby in colour, full bodied and tannic, the main grape variety being Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with Merlot. The gravel soils ensure good water drainage and retention of the heat of the sun helping the grapes to ripen well, as well as a deep root system, ideal conditions for the production of great wines. The authorised yields are 43hl/ha (40 hl/ha for villages designations).
