Médoc

All wines from the Médoc appellation in Bordeaux

The Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) Médoc in Bordeaux is located along the Gironde estuary, approximately 55 km northwest of Bordeaux, and is thus the northernmost appellation of the Bordeaux region. The generic term "Médoc" encompasses 8 appellations on the Left Bank: 2 sub-regional appellations (Médoc + Haut-Médoc) and 6 communal appellations (Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Moulis-en-Médoc, Listrac-Médoc, Margaux). However, the Médoc AOC, covering 5,473 hectares, produces only red wines blended from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, a small amount of Cabernet Franc, and a small percentage of Petit Verdot and Malbec.

The soils of the Haut-Médoc appellation are better drained because they are more gravelly than in the Médoc, which probably explains a more recognized terroir than that of the Médoc (Haut-Médoc having 5 Crus Classés in 1855). On the other hand, the AOC Médoc benefits from the imposing width of the Gironde, and its moderating effect on thermal extremes which promotes air circulation, and thus helps to avoid late spring frosts (as in 2017). The AOC Médoc has no Cru Classé from 1855, but a few Crus Bourgeois stand out, such as the following châteaux: La Cardonne, Leboscq, Les Grands Chênes, Les Ormes Sorbet, Patache d'Aux, Potensac, La Tour de By, la Tour-Haut-Caussan, la Tour St Bonnet …

The red wines of the Médoc appellation are generally light-bodied and not very powerful, and generally should be drunk in their early years, while fruity. However, a few Châteaux like La Tour St Bonnet require several years of aging to mellow their tannins, and can be kept for up to 10 years in their best vintages such as 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005. In terms of food and wine pairings, red wines from the Médoc appellation can easily be paired with terrines, grilled ribeye steak, or pan-fried porcini mushrooms.
