The pursuit of balance on the terroirs of the Haut-Médoc - Third Grand Cru Classé
Château La Lagune is an emblematic reference in the wines of the Haut-Médoc, situated on one of the most renowned gravel ridges in the Bordeaux region. Known for combining power and elegance, this grand cru classé estate produces fine, well-balanced wines appreciated by wine lovers the world over. Through environmentally responsible viticulture and exceptional expertise, the estate distinguishes itself by the finesse of its wines.
Château La Lagune traces its origins to the 16th century, at a time when Dutch engineers helped transform Bordeaux by draining the marshlands. However, it was in the 18th century that the estate began to forge a viticultural reputation, with the construction of its magnificent chartreuse in 1730 by architect Victor Louis, famous for designing the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux. From that point on, the château quickly distinguished itself through the quality of its wines.
Classified as a third grand cru in 1855, during the famous Médoc classification, the estate saw its renown decline over the course of the 20th century, struck by the world wars and the economic crisis. The estate was revitalized in 1958 when it was acquired by Georges Brunet, who relaunched production and modernized the facilities. This renewal was continued after 1962 by the Champagne house Ayala, which, for nearly forty years, worked toward the recognition of La Lagune's wines.
Since 2000, the château has been the property of the Frey family, an influential dynasty in the world of wine, also owners of prestigious estates such as Paul Jaboulet Aîné in the Rhône Valley. Caroline Frey, a qualified oenologist, took the helm of the estate in 2004. Drawing on her expertise and passion for organic and biodynamic viticulture, she has transformed La Lagune into a model of sustainable viticulture, while continuing to raise the qualitative level of the estate's wines.
Château La Lagune extends over 110 hectares on the left bank, planted on a gravel ridge located in the Haut-Médoc region, one of the finest on the left bank. This particular geological formation, composed of rounded pebbles eroded by the Garonne, plays an essential role in the quality of the wines. The gravelly soils, combined with cooler subsoils, provide excellent vine exposure and optimal drainage, thus conferring on the grape varieties a perfect balance between power and elegance.
The vineyard is predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), accompanied by Merlot (30%) and Petit Verdot (10%). Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and aging potential, Merlot softens the wine by adding roundness and suppleness, while Petit Verdot reinforces the backbone of the wines by lending them additional complexity, particularly on the finish.
Since 2016, the entire vineyard has been certified in organic farming, and in 2021, it also received biodynamic certification, a crowning achievement following several years of efforts to promote sustainable viticulture. Biodynamic practices, based on an ecosystemic approach to viticulture, allow the full richness of the soils to be expressed and the vitality of the vines to be strengthened, guaranteeing grapes of exceptional quality.
At Château La Lagune, winemaking is a meticulous art in which every detail matters. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with rigorous sorting of the bunches to select only fruit at perfect maturity. This precise selection ensures high-quality grapes, which are indispensable to the production of the estate's great wines.
The winemaking process takes place in an ultramodern vat room, inaugurated in 2004, and equipped with 72 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, suited for highly precise plot-by-plot vinification. This cutting-edge technology ensures perfect control of fermentation and allows the characteristics of each grape variety and plot to be respected as fully as possible.
Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine is blended according to grape varieties and plots before aging begins. Château La Lagune attaches particular importance to aging in French oak barrels, renewed at a rate of 50% each year. The wines rest there for between 12 and 18 months, depending on the cuvée, promoting a micro-oxygenation that refines the tannins while preserving the freshness of the fruit. The different barrels are carefully selected from six coopers, according to the grape varieties: Taransaud and Saury for Cabernet Sauvignon, Bernard and Quintessence for Merlot, and Boutes and Sylvain for Petit Verdot.
This constant pursuit of balance between power, finesse, and complexity gives rise to wines of great elegance, perfectly representative of La Lagune's terroir.
Château La Lagune produces several high-quality cuvées, each representing a unique expression of the terroir.
Château La Lagune
The estate's fine wine, Château La Lagune, is one of the most elegant of the Haut-Médoc. Composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, it stands out for its aromatic complexity, its refined structure, and its silky tannins. The addition of Petit Verdot brings a touch of freshness and depth, while Merlot balances the whole with its roundness. This wine offers excellent aging potential, revealing its aromas of dark fruit, cedar, and tobacco over the years.
Moulin de La Lagune
The estate's second wine, Moulin de La Lagune, favors a higher proportion of Merlot, making it a more approachable wine from its earliest years. Its generous character, with notes of ripe red fruits, makes for a seductive cuvée that nonetheless retains all the finesse and elegance characteristic of La Lagune's style. This wine is ideal for more immediate enjoyment, while also offering interesting aging potential.
Mademoiselle L
Introduced in 2004, the Mademoiselle L cuvée is sourced from 30 hectares of vines planted in the Haut-Médoc appellation. This more accessible wine stands out for its modern and fresh style, with red fruit aromas and a supple texture. It represents an excellent entry point for discovering the wines of Château La Lagune, while remaining faithful to the estate's elegant signature.
Evidence and Duo
Château La Lagune also produces special cuvées in small quantities, combining Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, a unique pairing that highlights the terroirs of Bordeaux and the Rhône Valley. The Evidence cuvée, composed of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, expresses a beautiful harmony between power and freshness. Duo, for its part, is a rare wine, produced exclusively in large formats, which marries the finest grapes from La Lagune and Jaboulet La Chapelle.
The Haut-Médoc, one of the prestigious appellations of the Bordeaux vineyard, is renowned for producing remarkable wines, particularly in its finest vintages. Among the most notable are iconic years such as 1975, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1990, which have left their mark on fine wine lovers.
