Domaine Montcalmes: precise and soft wines in the heart of the Languedoc region
Frederic Pourtalie is the owner of Domaine Montcalmes. He has vinified for Grange des Peres, Olivier Jullien (from Mas Jullien) and Alain Graillot. The first vintage that he vinified was 1999. The estate used to be classified as Coteaux du Languedoc, in the Terrasses du Larzac area, which is a high terroir of 300 metres above sea level. It is the highest terroir of Languedoc, which is why the wines from there are fresher. In 2010, he decided to run the estate on his own, apart from his cousin Vincent Guizard (who created Domaine Saint Sylvestre). Montcalmes estate now covers 23 ha of vineyards made of red grape varieties and 2 ha of white grape varieties (50% Roussanne and 50% Marsanne). In 2012, the estate started the organic conversion of the whole production, which was officially achieved in 2015.
The vineyard is located in the villages of Puechabon and Aniane. In Puechabon, the vines are Syrahs and Grenaches (30-year-old vines) and are grown on a limestone plateau facing North. In Aniane, the vineyards are facing South and North-West. That's where the Mourvedre grape variety is grown (as these are late-ripening vines) on rounded pebbles (galets roules type of soil), similar to the soils on which Chateauneuf du Pape vines are grown. Frederic Pourtalie vinifies his Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre coming from different terroirs separately, taking care of isolating the rounded pebbles from the limestone scree plots before the blend. The classic Terrasses du Larzac cuvee, often considered as the wine with the finest tannins in Languedoc, is magnificent. It is composed of Syrah (60%), Grenache (20%) and Mourvedre (20%). Since 2010, a new and very elegant Le Geai cuvee has been produced. It’s made of great Grenaches. The Le Geai Montcalmes cuvee is delightfut, smooth on the palate, and can taste like a Chateau Rayas. This wine is aged in oak barrels for 24 months (no new oak), and the blend is done 2 months prior to bottling. This gives the wines from Domaine Montcalmes their silky texture and the greatest finesse, all of that with exceptional value for money. The ageing potential of these red Languedoc wines is always between 10 and 15 years minimum. Domaine Montcalmes also produces a white Languedoc wine under the Languedoc Protected Designation of Origin (Roussanne/Marsanne), made from vines that are grown on a clay-limestone hillside, in the village of Puechabon. This distinguished white Montcalmes wine has a smooth, full-bodied character. It is quite high in alcohol. It's at its best between 4 and 10 years of age. The wines from Domaine Montcalmes are to be shared with wine enthusiasts, as they’ve got flawless style and consistency. The Domaine has been an icon estate in Languedoc for 15 years now, and international critics' reviews are particularly good.
