Our view on the 1999 vintage
In Bordeaux, the harvest of the 1999 vintage took place during a rainy September (big hailstorm on September 5st in Saint Emilion). The Estates that have partially downgraded or severely sorted their harvest obtain good results, improved by modern winemaking techniques. The Medoc 1999 wines harvested quickly are fragrant and colourful, but can sometimes lack of depth and charm. The 1999 first classified growths stand out and often dominate the other wines of the 1999 vintage in Bordeaux. In white, the year is average. Severe sorting in Sauternes has been undertaken because of the rains. Superb climatic conditions for 1999 Burgundy wines (more famous in red, because the whites seem less complex). The sun has perfectly ripened the grapes. Going up to the north of the Cote de Beaune (1999 Pommard, 1999 Volnay), the red wines are very good. They require a little patience, but will make great bottles for patient wine lovers. In white, the owners who knew how to limit the yields managed a good vintage. The year 1999 is rather average in Champagne. The NorthernRhone Valley produced an excellent 1999 vintage with superb successes for the 1999 Cote Rotie, 1999 Cornas and 1999 Hermitage in red… Fine red wines in the Southern Rhone sector as well but they are overshadowed by the magnificient wines produced in 1998. The 1999 vintage is lower than 1996 and 1997 in the Loire Valley, with however some successes in the white wines of 1999 Savennieres. The 1999 year is less famous than 2000 in Alsace, but may reserve some good surprises in the Rieslings Grands Crus.
