Wine 1999

In Bordeaux, the 1999 harvest took place during a rainy September (a heavy hailstorm on 5 September in Saint Emilion). Estates that partially declassified or rigorously sorted their harvest achieved good results, further improved by modern winemaking techniques. Superb climatic conditions in Bourgogne 1999 for this vintage (more reputed in red, as the whites appear less complete). The sun perfectly ripened the grapes, and up to the northern part of the Côte de Beaune (Pommard 1999, Volnay 1999), the red wines are very good. They require a little patience, but will yield excellent bottles for patient enthusiasts. In whites, producers who kept yields in check achieved a good vintage.

Our advice for buying a 1999 wine

The 1999 Médoc wines harvested quickly are fragrant and full of colour, but can sometimes lack depth and charm. The 1999 Premiers Crus Classés stand out and often dominate the other wines of the 1999 vintage in Bordeaux. In white, the year is average. Strict sorting in Sauternes as the harvest was disrupted by rain. 

The year 1999 is rather average to weak in Champagne. The northern Rhône Valley produces an excellent 1999 vintage with superb successes for the Côte Rôtie 1999, Cornas 1999 and Hermitage 1999 reds… Beautiful red wines in the Southern Rhône sector but in fact overshadowed by those of the year 1998. The 1999 vintage is inferior to 1996 and 1997 in the Loire Valley, with however some successes in the 1999 Savennières white wines. The year 1999 is less renowned than 2000 in Alsace, but can positively surprise in Rieslings Grands Crus.

If you wish to purchase a 1999 wine, we recommend the Château Margaux 1999 and Château Palmer 1999 in the Margaux appellation. The Latour 1999, Lafite Rothschild 1999 and Mouton Rothschild 1999 from Pauillac will also delight you. In Pessac Léognan turn to Haut Brion 1999 (in red or white), and Laville Haut Brion 1999 (white); In Pomerol L'Eglise Clinet 1999, Lafleur 1999, Pétrus 1999; In Saint Emilion: Cheval Blanc 1999 or Pavie 1999; and finally, in Sauternes: De Fargues 1999 or Rieussec 1999. In 1999 Burgundy, the Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits are age-worthy and make for great bottles: Echezeaux 1999, Richebourg 1999, Clos de Tart 1999. In white Burgundy, Jean François Raveneau produced very beautiful Chablis in 1999. In the Rhône, the 1999 Hermitage from Jean Louis Chave is immense and the 1999 Cornas from Allemand or Auguste Clape are excellent. Finally, you will find magnificent Côte Rôtie wines at Guigal.
