The story of Domaine Alain Graillot is one of a bold career change and a consuming passion for wine. Alain Graillot, an electrochemical engineer, decided in 1985 to leave a career in agricultural machinery sales to dedicate himself to viticulture. Originally from Crozes-Hermitage, he chose to return to his native land, in La Roche-de-Glun, to create an estate in his image. Trained by great names such as Jacques Seysses (Domaine Dujac) and Rhône winemakers like Gérard Chave and Auguste Clape, Alain Graillot laid the foundations for excellence in viticulture.

From his first vintage in 1985, he made his mark by revealing the little-known potential of Crozes-Hermitage, an appellation then overshadowed by its neighbors Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. In 1988, he definitively acquired the property and built new cellars, enabling independent production from 1989. Alain Graillot then broke with local tradition by vinifying and bottling his wines himself, a pioneering approach for the time.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Alain Graillot

Located in the heart of the alluvial plain of La Roche-de-Glun, between the Rhône and Isère rivers, the vineyard of Domaine Alain Graillot extends over 22 hectares, including 19 hectares of Syrah and 3 hectares of white grape varieties (Marsanne and Roussanne). The soils, composed of rolled pebbles, sands and well-drained gravels, give the wines a distinctive finesse and elegance. Vinifications of Domaine Alain Graillot

The winemaking philosophy of Domaine Alain Graillot is based on a traditional and minimalist approach, aimed at enhancing the character of the terroir and grape varieties. For the reds, mainly from Syrah, the grapes are vinified as whole bunches (without destemming) in temperature-controlled concrete vats. A cold maceration of 2 to 5 days precedes fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by a 15 to 21-day vatting with regular pumping over. Aging, lasting 15 to 18 months, is done 80% in used Burgundian barrels (1 to 3 years old) and 20% in vats, with only 2 to 3% new oak to preserve the purity of the fruit. Light filtration is carried out before bottling, without fining.

For the whites, composed of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, the grapes are pressed immediately after harvest. After cold settling, 50% of the must ferments in one-year-old barrels (from major Burgundian estates) and 50% in stainless steel vats at low temperature (18°C). Malolactic fermentation is generally avoided to maintain freshness and liveliness. The blending of the two lots takes place in spring, followed by early bottling, often under screw cap, for optimal consumption while young.
