History of Domaine Alain Graillot

The history of Domaine Alain Graillot is one of a bold career change and a consuming passion for wine. Alain Graillot, an electrochemistry engineer, decided in 1985 to leave a career in the marketing of agricultural machinery to devote himself to the vine. Originally from Crozes-Hermitage, he chose to return to his native land, in La Roche-de-Glun, to create a domaine in his own image. Trained alongside great names such as Jacques Seysses (Domaine Dujac) and Rhône winemakers such as Gérard Chave and Auguste Clape, Alain Graillot laid the foundations of a viticulture of excellence.

From his very first vintage in 1985, he made an impression by revealing the little-known potential of Crozes-Hermitage, an appellation then overshadowed by its neighbours Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. In 1988, he definitively acquired the property and built new cellars, enabling autonomous production from 1989. Alain Graillot then broke with local tradition by vinifying and bottling his wines himself, a pioneering approach for the time.

Since 2008, his sons Maxime and Antoine have taken the reins, perpetuating the legacy of their father, who passed away in 2022. Their commitment to authentic wines, from an exceptional terroir, has consolidated the domaine's reputation as one of the jewels of the Rhône Valley. With cuvées that have become iconic, Domaine Alain Graillot remains a must-visit destination for purchasing exceptional wines.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Alain Graillot

Located in the heart of the alluvial plain of La Roche-de-Glun, between the Rhône and Isère rivers, the vineyard of Domaine Alain Graillot extends over 22 hectares, including 19 hectares of Syrah and 3 hectares of white grape varieties (Marsanne and Roussanne). The soils, composed of rounded pebbles, sands and well-drained gravels, give the wines a distinctive finesse and elegance. These alluvials, inherited from ancient river beds, allow the vine roots to plunge deep, capturing the essential nutrients to produce grapes of great aromatic concentration.

The vines, aged between 15 and 60 years, are cultivated using organic farming, without chemical herbicides. Yields are deliberately limited through short pruning, and the soils are worked with a plough to preserve their vitality. The domaine also owns 1.5 hectares under the Saint-Joseph appellation, on granite hillsides in Saint-Désirat and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, producing fresher and more accessible wines in their youth. Each plot is harvested by hand, guaranteeing absolute respect for the fruit and its terroir expression.

Vinifications of Domaine Alain Graillot

The vinification philosophy of Domaine Alain Graillot is based on a traditional and minimalist approach, aimed at sublimating the character of the terroir and grape varieties. For the reds, primarily from Syrah, the grapes are vinified as whole clusters (without destemming) in thermoregulated concrete tanks. A cold maceration of 2 to 5 days precedes a fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by a cuvaison of 15 to 21 days with regular pump-overs. The ageing, lasting 15 to 18 months, takes place 80% in used Burgundian barrels (1 to 3 years old) and 20% in tanks, with only 2 to 3% new wood to preserve the purity of the fruit. A light filtration is carried out before bottling, with no fining.

For the whites, composed of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, the grapes are pressed immediately after harvest. After cold settling, 50% of the musts ferment in one-year-old barrels (sourced from great Burgundian domaines) and 50% in stainless steel tanks at low temperature (18°C). Malolactic fermentation is generally avoided to preserve freshness and vivacity. The two lots are blended in spring, followed by an early bottling, often under screwcap, for optimal consumption in youth.

This rigour in vinifications allows Domaine Alain Graillot to produce balanced wines, both pleasurable and complex, perfect for purchasing wine intended for immediate enjoyment or ageing.

The Cuvées of Domaine Alain Graillot

Domaine Alain Graillot offers a range of exceptional cuvées, reflecting its terroir and expertise. Here are the main ones:

Crozes-Hermitage Rouge

100% Syrah, this emblematic cuvée captivates with its aromas of black fruits, pepper, olive and liquorice. On the palate, it offers a fleshy texture, fine tannins and a mineral finish. Accessible in its youth, it gains in complexity with 5 to 10 years of ageing. An essential wine for any Syrah lover.

Crozes-Hermitage Rouge La Guiraude

Produced only in great vintages, La Guiraude is a selection of the finest barrels. More powerful and concentrated than the classic cuvée, it reveals spiced notes, ripe fruits and an elegant tannic structure. This wine for ageing, ideal after 7 to 15 years, is a gem for collectors.

Crozes-Hermitage Blanc

A blend of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, this white wine reveals aromas of white peach, apricot, wild flowers and a mineral touch. Its rich yet fresh palate, without malolactic fermentation, pairs perfectly with fish in sauce or white meats. To be enjoyed within 3 to 5 years.

Saint-Joseph Rouge

Produced from two small plots on granitic soils, this 100% Syrah cuvée is lighter and fresher than the Crozes-Hermitage. Its notes of red fruits, pepper and its lively finish make it a wine of pleasure, to be drunk within 5 to 10 years.

Syrocco Syrah Morocco

The fruit of a collaboration with the Domaine des Ouled Thaleb in Morocco, this atypical Syrah offers aromas of juicy fruits and soft spices. Vinified without destemming and aged in Burgundian foudres, it captivates with its freshness and elegance. A curiosity to discover.

Clos Somi Côtes-du-Rhône

This wine from the southern Rhône Valley, made from Cinsault, Grenache Noir and Syrah, offers fruity flavours and a lovely acidity. Accessible and pleasurable, it is perfect for purchasing a quality everyday wine.

Domaine Alain Graillot is a must-visit address for lovers of Rhône Valley wines. Thanks to an exceptional terroir, organic practices and careful vinifications, the domaine's cuvées, from the classic Crozes-Hermitage Rouge to the iconic La Guiraude, offer a unique tasting experience. Whether you are looking for a wine to enjoy today or a bottle to keep for special occasions, purchasing wines from Domaine Alain Graillot is a safe choice.
