Wine 1968

Our view on the 1968 vintage

The 1968 vintage in Bordeaux was particularly affected by 2 months without sun and watered by torrential rain, and only the terroir of Graves  (including Pessac Leognan, very well drained) and Chateau Petrus (drastic sorting of the grapes) were able to produce very good wines from that delicate harvest. The other wines are fairly lean and acidic, including in classified growths. The 1968 Sauternes wines were not spared because the Botrytis very quickly progressed on grapes that were not mature, and all of the classified growths of Sauternes were downgraded. Note that 1968 Burgundy wines have not been spared either on this 1968 vintage since no wine has been bottled at the Domaine de la Romanee Conti. The famous wine auction of the Hospices de Beaune was cancelled for the 1968 vintage (because too mediocre, as in 1910 and 1956). In 1968, the Rhone valley vineyard produced a bad vintage for both white and red wine, and the Champagne vines were affected by grey rot, resulting in flat, acidic and not very structured wines. In conclusion, the 1968 vintage is rather considered to be a very small year in France, but some successes in Porto or Sherry from 1968 may serve as consolation.

Which 1968 wine to buy? Our 1968 best buying advices

Our advice for buying a bottle of the 1968 vintage: Apart from a few classified crus from Graves and certain high end 1968 Pomerol wines such as 1968 Petrus, it seems difficult to recommend this vintage, which was very difficult for the entire French vineyard. You can direct your choice towards a Porto or Sherry.
