Our view on the 1977 vintage
Difficult 1977 vintage succeeding 2 good years in Bordeaux, with a deficit of maturity of the grapes in spite of delayed harvest until mid-October. The cold and humid summer did not favour the wines, but some 1st Grands Crus Classes in Pauillac (1977 Chateau Latour and 1977 Chateau Lafite Rotschild) were able to stand out. Poor quality wines for 1977 white Bordeaux, and on the 1977 Sauternes side, the wines are rather disappointing. In Burgundy the maturity of the grapes was insufficient due to the rainy summer, and chaptalisation was used a lot to strengthen the wines. No other region stands out particularly, and the 1977 vintage will therefore not really be remembered, especially since it was overshadowed by the two previous fine vintages (1975 and 1976).
