Wine 1976

The year of the heatwave in France, a hot wind (the sirocco) desiccated the grapes in Bordeaux at the beginning of September, and 1976 was the vintage with the earliest harvest since 1945 (beginning on 13/09 in Bordeaux), but under rainfall (from 11 to 15/09). The atypical profile of the 1976 vintage led to greater success in the northern Médoc (Saint Julien, Pauillac, Saint Estèphe) and a weaker vintage in the south (Margaux, Graves). A good vintage in Pomerol and Saint Emilion, and a very good 1976 vintage in Sauternes. Very good quality in red Burgundy (note that young vines suffered) and the white Burgundy wines are drier and harder due to overripeness of the grapes. The best red Burgundies can still be approached.

Our tips for buying a 1976 wine

A fine 1976 vintage in Champagne (a large, very ripe harvest). An excellent year for red wines from the Loire Valley (Chinon, Sancerre).

Looking for a wine from the 1976 vintage? Favor the northern Médoc (Pauillac, St Estèphe, St Julien), for example Château Montrose, Château Cos d’Estournel, Château Lafite Rotschild, Château Pichon Comtesse, Château Branaire Ducru, Château Ducru Beaucaillou, Château Léoville Las Cases, and Château Talbot. The Sauternes wines are also excellent (Château Climens, Château Coutet, Château De Fragues, Château Guiraud, Château Rieussec, Château Suduiraut, and Château Yquem). Red Burgundies from old vines have excellent aging potential and are worth prioritizing. Lucien Crochet’s red Sancerre is outstanding. Alsace wines from 1976 are exceptionally rich in sugar, and many live up to their promise.
