The world famous winegrower Pierre Overnoy took over the Overnoy estate in 1968. The Pierre Overnoy estate was created in Pupillin, a small village located 3km South of Arbois, in the Jura region. Pierre Overnoy has distinguished himself by vinifying his wines without adding any sulphur as from 1984, to the point of becoming a "natural wines" icon. It's Jules Chauvet, a physician who happens to be a talented wine taster and considered as the father of the natural wine movement, who inspired Pierre Overnoy with his cutting-edge approach and introduced him to these winemaking practices to which Pierre remained faithful. The Overnoy estate's future could have been totally different if Pierre Overnoy, 64 years old and with no children, hadn't decided to hand over his vineyards to Emmanuel Houillon in 2001. Indeed, Pierre Overnoy thought of Emmanuel Houillon as his spiritual son as they had been working together since 1989. The handover of power was a success, as Emmanuel Houillon and his wife Anne have been working hard to be worthy of Emmanuel’s "mentor" in the Overnoy estate. The wines produced are of the same philosophy as the ones of Pierre Overnoy.
Emmanuel Houillon is a discreet and perfectionist man who cultivates the 6 ha of vines in this wonderful terroir following the biodynamic principles. The White Juras are strong in character and can display a wide range or flavours with amazing ageing potential. It is true that the very long barrel-ageing process (wines are kept in barrels up to 9 years, with topping, like for the 2000 and 2003 vintages) gives them a smooth texture and outstanding controlled oxidation. Their 2014 Chardonnay has a remarkably smooth texture for this vintage, a sensuality (of fresh butter) that is immediately filled by that sharp, powerful acidity typical of the Jura wines. Red Juras, with their shimmering colours are silky, fresh and smooth wines. The Red Poulsard, with this distinctive orange colour, is full of mesmerizing dried flowers and citrus notes that last on a perfectly ripe and fine tannic structure. For wine enthusiasts who are unfamiliar with Overnoy estate, it’s time to give it a try. You’ll be delighted to taste these exceptional, pure, vivid and incredibly precise vintages. Unfortunately, these rare and precious wines have been so successful that the Overnoy Houillon estate's wines have become more and more expensive and hard to find.
