Wine 2001

In Bordeaux, the wines of the 2001 vintage are inferior to the year 2000 (in quality and price), but superior to 1999. The wines are marked by acidity (a cool and rainy summer, but a sunny September). This vintage is considered a late one, as Merlot ripeness was only reached at the end of September, but the Right Bank achieved great success with its vintage (in Pomerol 2001 and Saint Emilion 2001). Some inconsistencies among the 2001 Médoc Classified Growths, several of which lack volume and charm. Notable successes in the Graves wines (Pessac Léognan 2001), refined and elegant (especially in white). The Sauternais produced an anthological 2001 vintage, and the sweet white wines of Bordeaux are particularly rich, of rare opulence, with very long ageing potential. In Bourgogne 2001, the year produced a good red wine vintage in the Côte de Nuits. The summer was cool and rainy and only truly began in August, alternating between heat and heavy thunderstorms of rain or hail, sometimes causing localised damage. The 2001 white wines from the Côte de Beaune are intense and successful — ready to drink now.

Our advice for buying a wine from 2001

If you wish to invest in a bottle of wine from 2001, we can offer you several options. In Bordeaux, for 2001 Sauternes, the vintage should be cellared without delay: Climens 2001, Rieussec 2001, Suiduiraut 2001, Yquem 2001 are among the finest. Among the 2001 Classified Growths: Cos d'Estournel 2001, Lafite Rothschild 2001, Latour 2001, Léoville Barton 2001, Léoville Las Cases 2001 deserve a mention, along with Château Margaux 2001, Haut Brion 2001 (red and white), La Mission Haut Brion 2001 and Pape Clément 2001 from Pessac-Léognan. Fieuzal 2001 and Domaine de Chevalier 2001 are two major successes among 2001 Pessac-Léognan whites. In Pomerol: L'Eglise Clinet 2001, Lafleur 2001, Pétrus 2001, Le Pin 2001 and Vieux Château Certan 2001. In Saint-Émilion: Angélus 2001, Ausone 2001, Cheval white 2001, Pavie 2001, Troplong Mondot 2001. In Burgundy: many successful wines from the areas of Gevrey-Chambertin 2001, Nuits st Georges 2001 and Vosne Romanée 2001 for reds are among the best wines. For whites, why not choose a fine Meursault 1er cru 2001 or Puligny Montrachet 1er cru 2001 from the Côte de Beaune? For 2001 Rhône wines: a 2001 Côte-Rôtie from Guigal (Mouline 2001 or Landonne 2001), or a 2001 Cornas from Clape or Allemand. In Alsace, an excellent 2001 Riesling Clos Ste Hune from Trimbach.
