Jean Bourdy

Wines from Domaine Jean Bourdy: buy at the best price

This family property in the Jura, located in Arlay, is one of the oldest winemaking families in France. Since the estate was established in the 15th century, 15 generations of winemakers have succeeded one another, perpetuating the tradition. Today the vineyard extends over 10 hectares and rests on clay-limestone soils. Domaine Jean Bourdy covers all the appellations of the Jura: Côtes-du-Jura, Château-Chalon, Arbois, L'Étoile, Macvin, Marc de Jura and Crémant du Jura. The harvests are done by hand and the vineyard is farmed using biodynamics since 2006 and certified since 2010 (Demeter certification).

Jean Bourdy Château Chalon 1951 62cl

Among the wines produced by the estate, the Château Chalon cuvée represents one of the greatest vins jaunes in the world. Made exclusively from the savagnin grape variety, this rare wine tends to improve with age and has a cellaring potential of between 50 and 60 years. Domaine Jean Bourdy offers a full vertical of Château Chalon spanning vintages from the early twentieth century to the present day, including 1945, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1958 and 1959, and certain years that were less successful in other regions but that yielded interesting wines to offer as a birthday gift, such as the Jean Bourdy Château Chalon 1951 or 1958. Another appeal of the old Château Chalon wines from Jean Bourdy, and of vins jaunes in general, is that they lose their "Jaune" character with age and gain in subtlety: saffron, dried fruits and honey in particular come to replace the oxidative notes. In red, the Côtes du Jura cuvée, made from a blend of trousseau, poulsard and pinot noir grapes, offers surprising spice notes and fruit of great finesse. In white, the Côtes du Jura blanc cuvée, a single-varietal chardonnay, has a fine cellaring potential that can exceed 100 years. The wine is clear and brilliant and pairs perfectly with smoked fish or fish in sauce, as well as with certain cheeses.
