Domaine Pignier in Montaigu: a historic estate in the Jura
Domaine Pignier has been established in Montaigu (adjacent to Lons le Saunier) for over 2 centuries and 7 generations. The 3 Pignier children (Jean-Étienne, Antoine, and Marie-Florence Pignier) took over Domaine Pignier in the late 1980s and decided to practice biodynamics in 1998, completing Demeter certification in 2003.
In 2020, Antoine's son (Thibault) joined the Domaine Pignier team. With a vineyard of nearly 14 hectares located on hillsides on the Lias marls (fossils) and Trias marls (variegated) all around Montaigu, old red grape varieties such as argant, enfariné or petit béclan are still cultivated here, though in minority, blended in the appealing Pignier À Table avec Léandre cuvée. The main grape varieties of Domaine Pignier remain of course trousseau, pinot noir, poulsard, chardonnay and savagnin. Foudres, barrels, ovoid concrete vats and even jars fill the magnificent and very ancient vaulted cellars from the 13th century of the Carthusian monks, the pride of the Pignier family. The wine range includes different cuvées of Jura red and Jura white: the Cellier des Chartreux chardonnay cuvée is aged under veil for 3 years and develops a rich nose of dried fruits (almond and hazelnut) and buttery notes. The palate is full, round and biscuity, with richness but balanced, and reflects its terroir well. Its aging potential is assured for at least 10 years. The Côte du Jura Savagnin sous voile offers a straw-gold color and a fine, powerful nose of citrus fruits; On the palate, candied citrus and walnut dominate, with beautiful length, finesse and remarkable precision. The wine's structure will also allow it to age gracefully. The Côte du Jura Gamay blanc comes from an old Chardonnay strain of massal selection called "gamay blanc". With a pale gold color, its nose evokes all the finesse and elegance of chardonnay, its full and fruity palate is of great purity. The trousseau cuvée Les Gauthières aged 10 months in amphora displays a dark cherry red color, and combines complex aromas of red fruits (black cherry) with sweet spices and delicate undergrowth notes. This is a very elegant and refined wine. As the Jura region has recently been in the spotlight, and since Domaine Pignier is now widely acclaimed by critics and mentioned in the best wine guides, you should not delay too long in discovering them if you haven't already done so.
