The Pignier estate in Montaigu: a historic estate in the Jura
The Pignier estate has been established in Montaigu (bordering Lons-le-Saunier) for more than 2 centuries and 7 generations. The 3 Pignier children (Jean-Étienne, Antoine and Marie-Florence Pignier) took over the Pignier estate in the late 1980s; they decided to practice biodynamics in 1998, and completed the Demeter certification in 2003.
In 2020, Antoine's son (Thibault) joined the team at Domaine Pignier. With a vineyard of nearly 14 hectares situated on hillside slopes over Liassic (fossil) and Triassic (variegated) marls all around Montaigu, old red grape varieties are still cultivated here, albeit in minority, such as argant, enfariné and petit béclan, blended into the seductive cuvée Pignier À Table avec Léandre. The dominant grape varieties of Domaine Pignier remain, of course, trousseau, pinot noir, poulsard, chardonnay and savagnin. Large casks, barrels, ovoid concrete vats and even jars fill the magnificent and very ancient vaulted cellars of the 13ème century Carthusian monks, the pride of the Pignier family. The range of wines includes different cuvées of Jura rouge and Jura blanc : the Cellier des Chartreux chardonnay cuvée is aged under a veil for 3 years and develops a rich nose of dried fruits (almond and hazelnut) with buttery notes. The palate is ample, round and biscuity, with richness yet balanced, and truly reflects its terroir. Its ageing potential is assured for at least 10 years. The Côte du Jura Savagnin sous voile offers a straw gold colour and a fine, powerful nose of citrus fruits; on the palate, candied citrus and walnut dominate, with a beautiful length, finesse and remarkable precision. The wine's structure will also allow it to age gracefully. The Côte du Jura Gamay blanc comes from an old massale selection Chardonnay vine called "gamay blanc". With a pale gold colour, its nose evokes all the finesse and elegance of chardonnay, while its ample, fruity palate is of great purity. The trousseau cuvée Les Gauthières, aged 10 months in amphora, displays a deep cherry red colour and blends complex aromas of red fruits (black cherry) with gentle spices and delicate notes of undergrowth. It is a highly elegant and refined wine. The Jura region has recently come under the spotlight, and since Domaine Pignier is now widely acclaimed by critics and cited in guides to the finest wines, one should not wait too long to discover them if one has not already done so.
