The wines of Domaine De La Pinte from the Jura
The Domaine de la Pinte in Arbois was founded in 1953-55 by Roger Martin on the lieu-dit "La Pinte à la Capitaine" when he decided to plant 14 hectares of Savagnin, the emblematic varietal of the Jura, on the celebrated blue marl (Marnes bleues), or Blue Lias, characteristic of the Jura region. Thereafter his son, Pierre Martin, has been in charge of the Domaine de la Pinte which has grown to 34 hectares, wherein all the classic varietals of Arbois can be found: Savagnin, Chardonnay and Melon à queue rouge (a rare version of Chardonnay) for the Jura whites and the famous trinity for the Jura reds, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir. The Domaine de la Pinte is certified organic since 1999 and biodynamically certified Demeter since 2009.
Pierre Martin and his estate manager Samuel Berger tend to avoid working the soil too intensely. Grapes are hand-harvested, indigenous yeasts are used, the usage of sulphur is limited and the use of tanks or older wood barrels (foudre, demi-muid and fût) is favoured. All these practices tend to produce wines that are fine and fresh and the Domaine de La Pinte often holds back a part of its production in order to offer mature wines to consumers and connoisseurs. The range of wines is comprehensive. The cuvée "d'Automne" is full and round, generous in texture and flavour and is a blend dominated by 85% Savagnin and 25% Chardonnay. The nose offers a certain aromatic complexity around fresh, candied and dry fruits. The mouthfeel is smooth and balanced and the final is wonderfully fresh. The Arbois Pupillin "Fonteneille" is a Chardonnay from the "Fontenelle" plot, a clay-limestone plateau in the higher parts of Pupillin with numerous veins of blue marl. It offers an intense and powerful bouquet of white fruits and citrus. The mouth is structured and rich with ripe fruit and a mineral and fresh finish. The Arbois Pupillin « Melon à queue rouge » has a pale yellow robe, a powerful and complex nose of ripe and sun-kissed fruit such as pineapple, pear and peach. The mouth is generous and structured and finishes powerfully and large, yet balanced. Their Trousseau, another local varietal, is very much representative of its typical profile: powerful, fruity, sun-kissed spices. The 2018 vintage presents a ruby red robe with an intensely fruity nose, spices and smoke. Fresh in the mouth with a slightly tannic and spicy finish, it is superbly balanced. The Vin Jaune 2009 has all the hallmarks of that famous oxidative wine with its nose of fresh walnuts and curry and magnificent length. The Domaine de la Pinte is sought after for the quality of their production and the excellent value of their Jura wines.
