The wines of la Pinte in the Jura: beautiful biodynamic wines in Arbois
The domaine de la PINTE, located in Arbois, was founded in 1953/1955 by Roger Martin, establishing itself at the lieu-dit "La pinte à la Capitaine", and deciding to plant 14 ha of Savagnin, the emblematic Jura blanc grape variety of the Jura, on the famous Lias blue marls characteristic of the Jura.
His son, who succeeded him, Pierre MARTIN, currently manages the domaine de la Pinte, which now covers 34 hectares of vineyard, comprising the traditional grape varieties of Arbois: Savagnin, Chardonnay and Melon à queue rouge (an almost extinct variety of Chardonnay) for the whites, and the triptych of Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir for the Jura reds. Organic viticulture has been practiced here since 1999, and biodynamic farming certified Demeter since 2009. Pierre Martin and his estate manager Samuel Berger are committed to shallow ploughing, manual harvesting and advocate the use of indigenous yeasts, the limitation of sulphur, and the ageing of several wines in vat or wood (in foudre, demi-muid and barrel). This refined ageing produces wines that can be described as delicate and fresh. It is worth noting that domaine de la Pinte even holds certain older vintages to satisfy enthusiasts. The range of wines is very complete, and the Cuvée "d'Automne" is rich and full-bodied, generous in texture as in flavour, dominated by savagnin (at 85%, complemented by Chardonnay). On the nose, this characterful cuvée offers a beautiful aromatic complexity concentrated on fresh, candied and dried fruits. The palate presents a silky attack, which develops into a fine balance. The acidic finish brings a lovely freshness. The Arbois Pupillin Chardonnay Fonteneille cuvée from domaine de la Pinte is produced from Chardonnay grown on the lieu-dit Fontenelle, a clay-limestone plateau with a few veins of blue marl, on the heights of Pupillin. This cuvée offers an intense and powerful bouquet of yellow fruits and citrus. The palate is full-bodied with fine substance, flavours of well-ripened fruits and a mineral finish, bringing a pleasant freshness. The Arbois Pupillin Melon à queue rouge offers a pale golden-yellow colour, a powerful and complex nose characterised by aromas of very ripe, sun-drenched fruits: pineapple, pear, peach… The palate is structured and generous in power, with great amplitude on the finish and a fine balance. Trousseau is the other local grape variety, with its Jurassian character: power, fruitiness and sun-drenched spices on the 2018 vintage, and the wine presents a superb ruby red colour, with a very fruity, spiced and lightly smoky nose. Fresh on the palate, with a tannic and spiced finish, this Trousseau is superbly balanced. The vin Jaune 2009 from domaine de la Pinte is of course oxidative, with aromas of fresh walnut and curry, and its power as well as its length on the palate are truly magnificent. domaine de la Pinte is to be recommended for the quality of its production and its excellent value for money in a region like the Jura.
