The wines of La Pinte in the Jura: beautiful biodynamic wines from Arbois
The Domaine de la PINTE, located in Arbois, was established in 1953/1955 by Roger Martin, settling on the lieu-dit "La pinte à la Capitaine", and deciding to plant 14 ha of Savagnin, the iconic Jura blanc grape variety of the Jura, on the famous Liassic blue marls characteristic of the region.
His son succeeded him, Pierre MARTIN, currently manages Domaine de la Pinte, which now extends over 34 hectares of vineyard, including the traditional Arbois grape varieties: Savagnin, Chardonnay, and Melon à queue rouge (an almost extinct variety of Chardonnay) for whites, and the triptych of Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir for red Jura wines. Organic viticulture has been practiced here since 1999, and biodynamic farming certified Demeter since 2009. Pierre Martin and his estate manager Samuel Berger are committed to practicing shallow plowing, manual harvesting, and advocate for the use of indigenous yeasts, sulfur limitation, and aging wines in tank or wood (in large oak casks, demi-muids, and barrels). This refined aging produces wines that can be described as fine and fresh. It should be noted that Domaine de la Pinte even has certain old vintages to satisfy enthusiasts. The wine range is very comprehensive, and the "d'Automne" Cuvée is rich and full-bodied, generous in texture as in flavor, dominated by Savagnin (at 85%, complemented by Chardonnay). On the nose, this typical cuvée offers beautiful aromatic complexity concentrated on fresh, candied, and dried fruits. The palate presents a silky attack, which evolves into good balance. The acidic finish brings beautiful freshness. The Arbois Pupillin Chardonnay Fonteneille cuvée from Domaine de la Pinte is produced from Chardonnay grown on the Fontenelle lieu-dit, which is a clay-limestone plateau with some veins of blue marl, on the heights of Pupillin. This cuvée offers an intense and powerful bouquet of yellow fruits and citrus. The palate is full-bodied with beautiful substance, flavors of ripe fruit, and a mineral finish, bringing pleasant freshness. The Arbois Pupillin Melon à queue rouge offers a pale golden-yellow robe, a powerful and complex nose characterized by aromas of very ripe and sun-drenched fruits: pineapple, pear, peach... The palate is structured and generous in power with great amplitude in the finish, beautifully balanced. Trousseau is the other local grape variety, with its Jura character: power, fruitiness, and sun-drenched spices on the 2018 vintage, and the wine presents a superb ruby red color, with a very fruity nose, spiced and slightly smoky. Fresh on the palate, with a tannic and spicy finish, this Trousseau is superbly balanced. The Vin Jaune 2009 from Domaine de la Pinte is of course oxidative, with aromas of fresh walnut and curry, and its power and length on the palate are truly magnificent. Domaine de la Pinte is highly recommended for the quality of its production and its excellent value for money in a region like the Jura.
