Wine 2000

An excellent year for the Bordeaux wines of 2000, but unfortunately not for the white wines of Sauternes 2000. Spring was warm and rainy, and summer only began at the end of July — very dry and scorching — finally allowing for good ripeness and perfect concentration of the grapes. The 2000 red wines are superbly structured and built for lengthy ageing. Patience will be required before approaching them. In Bourgogne, the 2000 vintage is more favourable to white wines, as the reds suffered more from the 2 cold and rainy summer months that required extensive work in the vineyards before a rise in temperatures at the end of August suddenly accelerated ripening. The red wines are rather inconsistent, but the whites from the Côte de Beaune and Chablis 2000 are particularly successful, yielding complex wines of beautiful aromatic purity.

Our advice for buying a bottle of 2000 wine

In the Médoc, Saint-Julien 2000 and Pauillac 2000 are magnificent, and Margaux 2000 and Saint-Estèphe 2000 follow closely. This vintage is exceptional for Pomerol 2000 and Saint-Émilion 2000, with a great many particularly highly rated wines (including several 100/100 Parker).

The sectors of Meursault 2000, Puligny Montrachet 2000 and Chassagne Montrachet 2000 (1ers Crus and Grands Crus of Burgundy) are the great winners of the vintage. In Champagne, the wines have a limited ageing potential. As for the Rhône wines, the 2000 vintage is often better in white and suffers from being overshadowed by 1999, which was exceptional. It is however very successful for Cornas 2000 and Châteauneuf du Pape 2000, where the wines have potential. The year 2000 is a classic one for the Loire wines 2000, with fine red wines (Chinon) and well-crafted dry white wines (Touraine). Alsace produced good wines in the year 2000 in Rieslings. Their ageing potential will be limited with the exception of sweet white wines.

If you wish to invest in a bottle of 2000 wine, you are spoilt for choice in Bordeaux where scores are very high (rated 96 and above): Lafite Rothschild 2000, Latour 2000, Lynch Bages 2000, Mouton Rothschild 2000, Pichon Longueville Comtesse 2000, Léoville Las Cases 2000, Château Margaux 2000, Palmer 2000, Montrose 2000, Haut Brion 2000, La Conseillante 2000, L'Eglise Clinet 2000, L'Evangile 2000, Pétrus 2000, Angélus 2000, Ausone 2000, Pavie 2000, Tertre Roteboeuf 2000… For the Sauternes, we recommend Climens 2000 and Rieussec 2000. In red Burgundy, the following sectors deserve attention: Chambolle Musigny 2000, Gevrey Chambertin 2000, Vosne Romanée 2000, and Nuits-St-Georges 2000. The white Chablis wines (1ers crus and Grands Crus from the finest Burgundy producers) are superb, and in Meursault 1er cru 2000 or in the Chassagne Montrachet 2000 sector, the wines are rich and complex. In the Rhône Valley, Cornas or Châteauneuf du Pape will not disappoint you.
