Our view on the 2000 vintage

Excellent year for the 2000 Bordeaux wines, but unfortunately not for the 2001 Sauternes wines. The spring was hot and rainy, and a very dry summer started only at the end of July, allowing finally a good maturity and a perfect concentration of grapes. The 2000 red wines are superbly structured and will age beautifully in a cellar. Indeed, it will take patience to approach them. In the Medoc, 2000 Saint Julien and 2000 Pauillac are magnificent and 2000 Margaux and 2000 Saint Estephe follow them closely. This vintage is exceptional for 2000 Pomerol and 2000 Saint Emilion with many very particularly well rated wines (including several 100/100 Parker). In Burgundy, the 2000 vintage was more favourable to white wines because the reds suffered more from the cold and rainy summer months requiring a lot of work in the vines before a rise in temperatures at the end of August suddenly accelerating maturity. The red wines are quite heterogeneous, but the whites of the Cote de Beaune and 2000 Chablis are particularly successful, giving complex wines and a beautiful aromatic purity. The wines from 2000 Meursault, 2000 Puligny Montrachet and 2000 Chassagne Montrachet (1er  Crus and Grands Crus of Burgundy) are the big winners of the vintage. In Champagne the wines have a limited aging potential. With regard to Rhone wines, the 2000 vintage is often better in white and suffers from being in the shadow of the exceptional 1999 vintage. Some wines are however very successful such as 2000 Cornas and 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape, where the wines have potential. The year 2000 is classic for Loire wines, with beautiful red wines (2000 Chinon) and dry white wines that are very successful (Touraine). The Alsace crafted fine 2000 wines from Rieslings, however their aging potential will be limited except for the sweet white wines.

If you want to invest in a bottle of wine from 2000, you are spoiled for choice in Bordeaux where the ratings are very high (rated 96 and above) : 2000 Lafite Rothschild, 2000 Latour, 2000 Lynch Bages, 2000 Mouton Rothschild, 2000 Pichon Longueville Comtesse, 2000 Leoville Las Cases, 2000 Chateau Margaux, 2000 Palmer, 2000 Montrose, 2000 Haut Brion, 2000 Conseillante, 2000 Eglise Clinet, 2000 Evangile, 2000 Petrus, 2000 Angelus, 2000 Ausone, 2000 Pavie, 2000 Tertre Roteboeuf… For Sauternes, we recommend 2000 Climens and 2000 Rieussec. In red Burgundy, the following sectors deserve attention: Chambolle Musigny, Gevrey Chambertin, Vosne Romanee, and Nuits St Georges. The 2000 Chablis (1er Crus and Grands Crus from the best producers) are superb. 2000 Meursault 1erCrus and 2000 Chassagne Montrachet are rich and complex. In the Rhone Valley, 2000 Cornas or 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape will please you.
