Wine 2011

In Bordeaux, the year 2011 required great vigilance and methodical sorting from winemakers, as uneven grape quality was the order of the day. Château Margaux produced only 29 hl of wine per hectare (very low) and in Saint-Émilion, the Merlot grape was slightly diluted due to climatic conditions (Cabernet Franc, on the other hand, was successful). The 2011 wine vintage is therefore inferior to the exceptional years of 2009 and 2010. However, the 2011 wine bottles offer a more immediately appealing fruitiness, making them less profound but more readily drinkable (within 10 years). In Sauternes white wine, 2011 is of above-average quality. In Burgundy wine 2011, the vintage is early, and the wines prove to be appealing and supple, but of lighter structure. They will therefore keep less long in the cellar.

Our advice for purchasing a 2011 wine

The tannins of the red Burgundies of 2011 (in the Côte de Nuits) are light, and the oak ageing discreet. The red wines can be enjoyed relatively quickly. As for the white Burgundy wines of 2011 from the Côte de Beaune, they offer a light and fruity style that can sometimes lack intensity. In Champagne, the 2011 vintage is described as early-ripening, with Chardonnay (blanc de blancs) dominating in terms of quality. The major houses release their wines 6 to 10 years after the vintage, and some fine bottles will likely soon be offered for sale. In the Rhône Valley in 2011, the summer weather was unsettled, harvests were spread out over time, and the 2011 red wine bottles will be best enjoyed earlier, on a fruity profile. While wines from Côte Rôtie, Hermitage and Châteauneuf du Pape are traditionally built for ageing, in 2011 they will be more approachable in their youth). The 2011 white wines of the Rhône Valley will be less powerful than usual. Alsace produced a somewhat underwhelming 2011 vintage, as the summer weather encouraged the development of grey rot. The 2011 Rieslings are worthy of interest; however, there is a very low volume of sweet wines in SGN style due to autumn weather conditions that were not conducive to Botrytis. In the Loire Valley wines, the 2011 red wines, having been harvested later, benefited from good conditions to recover from a tricky summer (Bourgueil, Chinon, Saumur Champigny). The 2011 Loire whites suffered from a contrasted summer and will be more supple than those of 2010, to be enjoyed more quickly.

If you wish to purchase a bottle of wine, in Bordeaux we recommend choosing the grands crus classés of the Médoc and other reputed Right Bank appellations: Ducru Beaucaillou 2011, Lafite Rothschild 2011, Latour 2011, Léoville Las Cases 2011, Château Margaux 2011, Montrose 2011, Mouton Rothschild 2011, Pontet Canet 2011, Haut Brion 2011, Ausone 2011, Cheval Blanc 2011 (very successful), Lafleur 2011, Tertre Roteboeuf 2011 … In Sauternes: Climens 2011 and Yquem 2011…. In red Burgundy 2011: the Gevrey Chambertin 2011 (and Grands crus) from Rousseau or an Echezeaux 2011 from Dujac, and in white Burgundy 2011: a Meursault 1er cru 2011 or Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru 2011. In the Rhône Valley, a Cornas 2011 from Clape or Allemand, or a lightly bodied and already accessible Châteauneuf du Pape 2011.
