Vintages ending in 9 are often a sign of quality! 2019 lives up to that reputation: this vintage has produced some delicious wines!
In a large part of France's wine-growing regions, the vines suffered from significant temperature variations, from frost to drought, but they managed to resist and benefit from a late summer marked by some rainfall and mild weather, particularly in Côte de Nuits, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and in the Loire vineyard. Our tips for buying 2019 wine

From frost to drought, 2019 was a year of unpredictable weather in Burgundy. The harvest nevertheless took place in excellent conditions, allowing the grapes to develop well in the final days of the growing season. Although considered a rather sun-soaked vintage, the juice showed good acidity, and the harvested grapes were exceptionally high in quality and soundness. Red Burgundy is characterized by fresh, concentrated Pinot Noirs with pronounced fruit intensity, appealing even in their youth. Their acidity also gives them good aging potential. Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise (notably Givry and Mercurey) thus form a trio of quality regions. As for White Burgundy, the meticulous work of the best producers yielded excellent Chardonnays, making it possible to produce dense, fruity wines with ample freshness.

The 2019 vintage was less challenging than its predecessor in Bordeaux. Despite a few frost warnings in mid-spring, the vines had to contend with intense heat. Just as sunburn became a concern, several bouts of rain gave the vineyards a respite during the summer and just before harvest, bringing freshness. The 2019 red Bordeaux wines are considered part of a great vintage: beautifully ripe, particularly the Cabernet Sauvignons, which sometimes struggle to reach full ripeness, as well as rich and dense. With intense black-fruit aromas and firm tannins in the Cabernets, and a voluptuous, supple texture in the Merlots, the 2019 Bordeaux wines are balanced and can be enjoyed sooner than the age-worthy 2018s. The dry white Bordeaux wines are balanced, combining freshness and density, making 2019 an outstanding vintage! Sweet wines (Sauternes and Barsac), meanwhile, were produced in very small quantities because the conditions needed for botrytis to develop did not come together. Grapes left on the vine had their flavors diluted by frequent rain in October.

In Alsace, years ending in 9 are very often successful: after 1949, 1959 and 1989, 2019 is another fine example. A mild winter and rather cool spring delayed the growing season slightly, but a dry, hot June helped the grapes reach ripeness. The Sylvaners and Rieslings are very well made, with fruit and substance that promise excellent aging potential.

In Beaujolais, the vintage is less spectacular than 2018 but more balanced, thanks to greater freshness. It followed a difficult year marked by frost, drought and thunderstorms. These twists in the weather allowed the grapes to ripen well, while the storms helped them retain some acidity. The result is fruity, floral wines with a lively tang.

As in Burgundy, the weather brought many extremes to Champagne: a mild winter, spring frosts and intense heat in early summer. Thanks to a few showers during the summer holiday changeovers, the grapes finished ripening in good conditions. Cooler nights helped the different Champagne grape varieties retain some acidity. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay are therefore all of high quality!

In the Northern Rhône Valley, the reputation of vintages ending in 9 still holds true! Much-needed rain in August relieved water stress after a hot, dry summer. Vines in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, for example, produced delicious, concentrated juice with beautiful acidity. The Condrieu wines are also successful, with fine acidity despite higher alcohol levels of around 14%.
In the Southern Rhône Valley, where weather conditions are regularly favorable, 2019 is an excellent vintage. Fruity and ripe, rich and dense, the wines are enjoyable young and built to age. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in particular will produce some truly great cuvées!

In the Loire the 2019 vintage was tough on winegrowers, with greatly reduced yields. Fortunately, the wines are of excellent quality! Thanks to good weather at the end of the growing season, the harvest went well and already promised good juice. The red wines have better acidity than the previous year and greater aging potential, with plenty of freshness, depth, and fruit and floral aromas. The Loire whites suffered a little more from the highly variable conditions but remain up to standard.

Despite the vagaries of the weather, many exacting winegrowers, often working organically or biodynamically, have helped wines from the Jura and Savoie reach a very high standard. In the Jura, frosts were severe, particularly for vineyards on the plains, but vines nestled on the hillsides fared better. Late-ripening varieties (Trousseau and Savagnin) flourished. Savoie suffered a little less and produced a good, classic vintage. Its white wines are very good and fruity, while the reds are aromatic and easy to drink.

For southern wines, it was another very hot year! A milder period followed, much to the winegrowers’ delight. In Provence, the wines of Bandol produced the region’s best reds: supple, juicy and aromatic, they are already easy to drink and also suitable for aging. Strong winds in Corsica reduced production, but some appellations produced remarkable whites and reds, while the rosés remained of good quality. Weather challenges in Languedoc-Roussillon also gave winegrowers no respite. Nevertheless, the reds are very well balanced, with silky tannins, lovely aromatic concentration and freshness! The whites are also of a good standard, although drought affected the grapes somewhat more.
