Vintages ending in 9 are often a sign of quality! 2019 lives up to that reputation: this vintage has produced some delicious wines!
In a large part of France's wine-growing regions, the vines suffered from significant temperature variations, from frost to drought, but they managed to resist and benefit from a late summer marked by some rainfall and mild weather, particularly in Côte de Nuits, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and in the Loire vineyard. Our advice for buying a wine from 2019

2019 was a capricious climatic year for Burgundy, ranging from frost to drought. The harvest was nonetheless able to take place in excellent conditions, which allowed the berries to develop well in the final days of their growing cycle. A vintage described as rather sunny, the juice nonetheless showed good acidity, and the harvested grapes were of a very high and very healthy quality level. The Burgundy Reds are characterised by fresh and concentrated Pinot Noirs, with a pronounced intensity of fruit, enough to win us over from their youth. The acidity also gives them good ageing potential. Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise (Givry and Mercurey in particular) thus form a triptych of quality! Regarding the Burgundy Whites, the precise work of the finest producers has yielded high-quality Chardonnays, resulting in dense and fruity wines with sufficient freshness.

The 2019 vintage was more straightforward than the previous one in Bordeaux. Despite some frost alerts in mid-spring, the vines had to contend with intense heat. Just as leaf scorch was feared, several rainfall events allowed the vineyards to recover during the summer and just before harvest, bringing much-needed freshness. The Bordeaux Reds 2019 are considered to belong to a great vintage: fine ripeness qualities, particularly for the Cabernet Sauvignons that sometimes struggle to reach their peak, richness and density. Intense aromas of dark fruits, firm tannins for the Cabernets and voluptuous, suave texture for the Merlots — the 2019 Bordeaux wines are well balanced and can be enjoyed sooner than the 2018s, which were built for long ageing. The Bordeaux Whites are balanced, combining freshness and density, making 2019 a truly great vintage! As for the sweet wines (Sauternes, Barsac) they experienced a very low yield as the conditions for botrytis development were not met. The grapes left on the vine saw their flavours diluted due to the abundant rainfall in October.

In Alsace, years ending in 9 are very often successful: after 1949, 1959 and 1989, 2019 is also a great success. A mild winter, a rather cool spring, a slight delay in the growing cycle, but a dry and warm June, allowing the berries to reach full ripeness. The sylvaners and rieslings are very well made: fruits and substance ensuring fine ageing potential.

In Beaujolais, the vintage is less spectacular than 2018, with greater balance thanks to a more pronounced freshness, after a complicated year marked by frost, drought and stormy episodes. These twists and turns allowed for good berry ripening, and the storms helped the grapes retain a certain acidity! The result is fruity, floral and tangy wines.

As in Burgundy, the climate experienced many extremes in Champagne. A mild winter, spring frosts, and very intense heat at the beginning of summer. Thanks to some rainfall during the mid-summer period, the final stages of berry ripening took place in good conditions, with cooler nights allowing the various Champagne grape varieties to retain a certain acidity. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay therefore reached a high quality level!

On the side of the Northern Rhône Valley, the quality of vintages ending in 9 once again holds true! Much-needed rainfall in August put an end to water stress after a hot and dry summer. The vines of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, for example, produced delicious concentrated juice with fine acidity. The Condrieu wines are also a success, with fine acidity despite a higher alcohol level of around 14 degrees.
In the Southern Rhône Valley, where climatic conditions are regularly favourable, 2019 is a very good vintage. Fruitiness and ripeness, richness and density — the wines are enjoyable young and built for ageing. It is notably within the Châteauneuf-Du-Pape appellation that some truly exceptional cuvées will emerge!

On the side of the Loire the 2019 vintage was tough for winemakers, with significantly reduced quantities. Fortunately, the quality of the wines is there! Thanks to favourable climatic conditions at the end of the growing cycle, the harvest went well and already promised good juice. The red wines have better acidity than the previous year and have greater ageing potential. Plenty of freshness, depth and aromas of fruits and flowers. The Loire whites suffered a little more from these highly variable conditions, but remain at a good level.

Despite the climatic uncertainties, many highly demanding winemakers, who often work with organic or biodynamic viticulture, have allowed the wines of Jura and Savoie to reach a very high standard. In the Jura, frosts were significant, particularly for vineyards located on the plains, but those nestled on the hillsides fared better. The late-ripening grape varieties (trousseau and savagnin) were able to flourish fully. Savoie suffered a little less and produced a classic and fine vintage! The white wines of Savoie are very good and fruity, the red wines are aromatic and easy to drink.

Regarding the wines of the South, it was once again a very hot year! This was followed by a milder cycle, to the great delight of the winemakers. In Provence, the wines of Bandol produced the best red wines of the region — they are supple, juicy and aromatic: already easy to drink and good for ageing. A great deal of wind in Corsica caused a drop in production, but certain appellations produced remarkable whites and reds, with the rosés consistently maintaining good quality. Some climatic uncertainties also in the Languedoc Roussillon gave winemakers no respite: the red wines are nonetheless very well balanced with silky tannins, a beautiful aromatic concentration and freshness! The whites are also of a good standard, even if the drought affected the berries a little more.
