Frequently Asked Questions

Château Montrose is located in Saint-Estèphe, in the Médoc, north of Bordeaux. It is part of the 1855 Classification of the Médoc, classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé. The estate benefits from an exceptional terroir composed of gravel and clay soils, on the banks of the Gironde, which gives its wines a powerful and mineral personality characteristic of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Montrose, lovers of great Bordeaux wines often cite 1990, 1989, and 2000, which rank among the most accomplished of the estate. Further back, the 1959 and 1970 vintages are also considered historical references, bearing witness to the consistency and exceptional ageing potential of this estate's wines over several decades.

The fine wine of Château Montrose comes from the best plots and the oldest vines on the estate, selected with the utmost rigour during the blending process. La Dame de Montrose, its second wine, is produced from younger vines or cuvées not retained for the fine wine. It offers a more accessible and earlier-drinking profile while retaining the elegance and typicity characteristic of the Château Montrose style.

Château Montrose crafts its wines from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. This ampelographic composition, typical of the great Bordeaux wines of the Médoc, gives rise to wines of great aromatic complexity, with firm tannins and a remarkable ageing potential that have made the estate's reputation.

Château Montrose is renowned for producing wines that require a long period of cellaring before expressing their full potential. It is generally advised to wait between 10 and 20 years after the vintage for the greatest years. The tight tannins and natural acidity of Saint-Estèphe wines allow Château Montrose to be kept and to blossom over 30 to 40 years, or even longer for exceptional vintages.

To fully enjoy a bottle of Château Montrose, it is recommended to decant it at least two hours before serving, to allow the wine to open up and release its aromas. The ideal serving temperature is between 16 and 18 °C. At the table, Château Montrose pairs beautifully with red meats in sauce, game, rib of beef, or hard cheeses, which respond perfectly to the tannic structure and aromatic depth of this great Saint-Estèphe.

History of Château Montrose

The estate of Château Montrose was not officially founded until 1815, when Théodore Dumoulin planted the first vines on the lands of the Lande d'Escargeon. However, the history of this place dates back much further. In 1778, Étienne Théodore Dumoulin purchased these then-untouched lands, sensing their exceptional potential. The estate was named "Montrose" in reference to the pink heathers that once carpeted the hillsides.

After the death of Dumoulin, the estate passed into the hands of Mathieu Dollfus in 1866. He greatly modernised the operation while respecting local viticultural traditions. Under the management of the Charmolüe family, from 1896 onwards, Château Montrose continued to prosper. In 2006, the estate was taken over by brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who undertook modernisation works while preserving the estate's heritage and renown.

Château Montrose stands out with exceptional vintages rated 100/100 by Robert Parker, including 2009, 2020, 1990 and 2022, which embody perfection. The 2016 vintage received an impressive 99+/100, while 1947, 2005 and 1921 were awarded 98/100, confirming the greatness of this Saint-Estèphe grand cru.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Montrose

The Château Montrose vineyard extends over 95 hectares in a single block on the left bank, a rare feat in Bordeaux, surrounding the château, the cellars and the estate buildings. This distinctive feature allows for homogeneous and precise management of the vineyard, ensuring optimal attention to each plot.

The lands of Château Montrose benefit from a unique terroir, made up of well-drained gravelly ridges, a precious asset for viticulture. The clay subsoil, rich in minerals, acts as a natural water reservoir, allowing the vines to draw deeply, even during periods of summer drought. Thanks to this exceptional terroir and the proximity of the Gironde estuary, which regulates temperatures, the estate is protected from spring frosts and intense summer heat.

The grape variety composition of Château Montrose is typically Médocain, with a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), accompanied by Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%). This blend of grape varieties contributes to the complexity and depth of the wines, with each plot carefully matched to a specific variety to optimise its expression.

Winemaking at Château Montrose

Winemaking at Château Montrose is a meticulous process that respects the authenticity and quality of the fruit. Harvests are carried out by hand and the grapes are carefully sorted at several stages before reaching the fermentation vats. The estate has 92 temperature-controlled stainless steel vats of varying sizes, allowing for bespoke plot-by-plot vinification.

The winemaking process aims to capture the essence of each micro-terroir. Every step, from fermentation to maceration, is carried out with care to preserve the integrity of the fruit. Macerations last up to 25 days, with particular attention paid to the gentle extraction of tannins and aromas. The free-run and press wines are managed in batches in order to preserve the diversity of aromatic profiles for the final blend.

The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a variable proportion of new wood depending on the cuvée. The Grand Vin, Château Montrose, benefits from 18 months of ageing in 60% new barrels, contributing structure, finesse and ageing potential.

The cuvées of Château Montrose

Château Montrose

Château Montrose is the estate's Grand Vin, a wine worthy of its renown. Crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, it embodies the elegance and power of the great wines of Saint-Estèphe. This wine is distinguished by its tannic structure, its complex bouquet of black fruits, liquorice and cedar, and its exceptional ageing potential. Certain vintages, such as 1990, 2009 and 2010, have received the highest distinctions with perfect scores from international critics. Château Montrose accounts for approximately 35 to 40% of the estate's production.

La Dame de Montrose

La Dame de Montrose, the estate's second wine, was created in 1983 as a tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, the estate's former administrator. This Merlot-dominated wine proves more accessible than the Grand Vin. It is supple, silky and offers generous aromas of red fruits and soft spices. With 12 months of ageing in barrels (30% new), La Dame de Montrose stands out for its refined style, more quickly enjoyable in its youth, while still reflecting the unique terroir of Montrose.

Tertio de Montrose

Tertio de Montrose is the estate's third wine, vinified with the same rigour as its elders. Produced from younger vines, it is aged for 12 months in barrels, of which 15% are new. This wine, formerly known as Saint-Estèphe de Montrose, is particularly appreciated for its freshness and fruity character. Thanks to its immediate charm, it is often destined for restaurateurs and represents an ideal entry-level wine for discovering the Montrose style.

The wines of Saint-Estèphe, an appellation of the Bordeaux vineyard, are distinguished by their elegance and longevity. Among the finest vintages, the years 1975, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1990 stand out, having captivated enthusiasts with their power and complexity. The following decades were equally remarkable, with exceptional vintages such as 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, and more recently 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. These years have confirmed Saint-Estèphe's ability to produce wines that combine finesse and depth.

The Second Classified Growths of 1855 are prestigious wines, bringing together iconic estates that often rival the first growths in quality. Among them, discover Château Brane-Cantenac and Château Durfort-Vivens, both located in Margaux, as well as Château Lascombes, Château Rauzan-Ségla and Château Rauzan-Gassies. In Saint-Julien, enthusiasts will appreciate the wines of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Gruaud Larose, and the celebrated Château Léoville Poyferré and Château Léoville Barton. Do not miss Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe, as well as the unmissable Château Pichon Longueville Baron and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac

Château Montrose, with its unique terroir, rich history and exceptional wines, stands as one of the jewels of the Médoc. Whether through the Grand Vin, La Dame de Montrose or Tertio de Montrose, each cuvée expresses with finesse the complexity and richness of the soils of Saint-Estèphe. The estate's commitment to quality and innovation, while respecting traditions, continues to captivate lovers of great wines. For enthusiasts and curious minds alike, Château Montrose is an essential reference, offering wines that age admirably and transcend generations.
