Frequently Asked Questions

Château Léoville Las Cases holds a special place in the Bordeaux hierarchy. Although classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this Saint-Julien estate regularly rivals the Premiers Crus in terms of concentration, complexity and longevity of its wines. This reputation rests on an exceptional terroir, the famous "Grand Enclos" adjoining Latour, and on the exacting winemaking standards upheld for decades by the Delon family. The term "super deuxième" simply reflects what enthusiasts and critics unanimously recognise: a level of quality that far exceeds its official ranking.

Among the most admired vintages from the estate between 1950 and 2010, several names stand out naturally. The 1982 is often cited as an absolute reference, of rare generosity and fullness. The 1986 impresses with its monumental tannic structure and ageing potential. The 2000 embodies the quintessence of the Las Cases style in a sun-drenched vintage. The 1996, 2005 and 2010 are also highly sought after by lovers of Bordeaux wines for ageing, combining precision, density and balance.

Due to its pronounced tannic structure and density, a Château Léoville Las Cases deserves particular attention when serving. For recent or age-worthy vintages, a decanter is strongly recommended: allow 1 to 2 hours of decanting to let the wine open up and express its aromas. The ideal serving temperature is between 16 and 18 °C. For older vintages, decanting should be shorter and more careful in order to preserve the sediment. This wine pairs wonderfully with red meats, roasted milk-fed lamb, or pressed-curd cheeses.

The fine wine of Château Léoville Las Cases is distinguished by a resolutely classic and structured style, typical of the great appellations of the Médoc. It features a deep ruby-hued robe, a nose of great precision blending blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco and the mineral notes characteristic of the gravelly soils of Saint-Julien. On the palate, the substance is dense, with a remarkably silky tannin texture for such a full-bodied wine. It is a wine for ageing par excellence, which generally requires several years in the cellar to reveal its full complexity.

Le Clos du Marquis is not a second wine in the traditional sense of the term: for a long time, it was considered a wine in its own right, sourced from distinct plots within the grand enclos. It offers a more accessible take on the Las Cases style, less austere in its youth, more supple and fruity, while retaining the elegance characteristic of the Saint-Julien appellation. Since 2007, the estate's true second wine has been called Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases, leaving Le Clos du Marquis its own distinct identity. These two cuvées represent an excellent entry point into the world of the estate.

The restrained power and aromatic finesse of Château Léoville Las Cases make it a highly versatile table wine for special occasions. It pairs ideally with aged cuts of beef (côte de bœuf, beef Wellington), herb-roasted lamb or a seven-hour leg of lamb. Its notes of cedar and truffle express themselves magnificently alongside preparations based on wild mushrooms or game in sauce. For a more original pairing, it also accompanies a selection of aged cheeses with elegance, particularly a well-aged Comté or an Ossau-Iraty.

History of Château Léoville Las Cases

Château Léoville Las Cases has its roots in the viticultural history of the Médoc since the 17th century. Originally, the estate was part of a vast domain known as Mont-Moytié, belonging to Jean de Moytié, an influential member of the Bordeaux Parliament. Over the centuries, this estate changed hands to become one of the largest properties in the region. In the mid-18th century, Blaise Antoine Alexandre de Gascq, Lord of Léoville, undertook to develop the estate and elevate the quality of its wines, propelling it to the forefront of the Bordeaux scene.

At the time of the French Revolution, as with many other estates, the Léoville domain was divided. Thus, one part became Château Léoville Barton and another, Château Léoville Poyferré. However, the heart of the estate was returned to Pierre-Jean de Las Cases, Marquis de Las Cases, giving birth to the prestigious Château Léoville Las Cases as we know it today. Since the end of the 19th century, the estate has belonged to the Delon family, who continue to manage it with a constant commitment to quality and excellence.

Château Léoville Las Cases is acclaimed by Robert Parker with 99/100 for the 2016 and 2018 vintages, while the years 1986, 2000, 1996, 2005, 2010 and 2019 receive a solid 98/100. These scores highlight the elegance and power of this cru.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Château Léoville Las Cases

The terroir of Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most remarkable in the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate extends over approximately 97 hectares of left bank vines, including the celebrated "Grand Clos", a 55-hectare enclosed vineyard surrounded by a stone wall. This terroir benefits from an ideal position, adjoining Château Latour in Pauillac and bordering the Gironde. This proximity to the estuary grants the vineyard a unique microclimate that promotes early ripening of the grapes while protecting the vines from frost.

The soils, of great complexity, are primarily composed of Quaternary gravels, with sandy, clayey and gravelly-sandy subsoils. The geological diversity of the estate ensures perfect drainage, providing the vines with an optimal and consistent water supply, without excess. This soil composition is ideal for the flourishing of noble grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which make up the estate's vineyard plantings.

The average age of the vines in the Grand Clos is 52 years, and their planting density reaches 8,600 vines per hectare, ensuring optimal concentration of aromas in each berry.

Winemaking at Château Léoville Las Cases

Winemaking at Château Léoville Las Cases remains deeply rooted in the Bordeaux tradition, while incorporating the most modern technological advances. Each parcel of the estate is vinified separately in order to preserve the singularity of the different terroirs. The fermentation process takes place in a combination of wooden, stainless steel and concrete vats of varying sizes, all equipped with temperature control systems for perfectly controlled fermentation.

The château has oak vats specially reserved for the vinification of its Fine Wine. After malolactic fermentation, which also takes place in vats, the blending is carried out, allowing the teams to taste the wine prior to barrel ageing. The wines of Château Léoville Las Cases are then aged for 18 to 20 months in new French oak barrels (approximately 90% new wood), which imparts fine tannins and a structure suited to long-term ageing.

Château Léoville Las Cases has always been at the forefront of oenological techniques. As early as 1987, it was one of the first estates to use a reverse osmosis machine to concentrate the musts and improve wine quality. This technique is still used today in particular vintages to enhance the depth and aromatic intensity of the wines.

The cuvées of Château Léoville Las Cases

Château Léoville Las Cases offers three principal cuvées, each embodying the soul and terroir of the estate.

The Fine Wine of Léoville Las Cases

Produced predominantly from the old vines of the Grand Clos, this wine is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc. It is one of the most sought-after wines of Bordeaux, renowned for its depth, elegance and exceptional ageing potential. It is distinguished by its intense blue-black colour, even in more modest vintages. On the palate, it offers a defined tannic structure, complex aromas of dark fruits, graphite and cedar, and a remarkable length.

Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases

Created in 2007, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases is the estate's second wine. Produced from young vines, it contains a higher proportion of Merlot than the Fine Wine, making it more approachable in its youth. Although more accessible, it nonetheless retains the estate's signature with a fine structure and aromas of fresh and ripe fruits. It is an ideal wine for more immediate drinking, while offering undeniable elegance.

Clos du Marquis

Long regarded — mistakenly — as the estate's second wine, the Clos du Marquis is in reality a cuvée in its own right. Produced from distinct parcels of the estate, located to the west of the Grand Clos, it embodies the character unique to the Saint-Julien appellation. Its grape variety composition differs slightly from that of the Fine Wine, with a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, offering a more upright and structured wine. It is recognised for its excellent longevity and its rich aromas of dark fruits, tobacco and leather.

Saint-Julien, a flagship appellation of the Médoc in Bordeaux, is renowned for its red wines of great finesse and longevity. Certain vintages stand out in particular for their exceptional quality, offering powerful, elegant and complex wines. Among the finest vintages, one finds years such as 1975, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1990, which are true benchmarks for lovers of age-worthy wines. More recent years are equally distinguished, with outstanding vintages such as 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, all acclaimed for their balance and ageing potential. The years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 are equally distinguished by their richness and complexity, continuing to make Saint-Julien an unmissable reference in the world of wine.

The Deuxièmes Crus Classés of 1855 constitute a prestigious category, bringing together iconic estates that often rival the premiers crus in quality. Among them, discover Château Brane-Cantenac and Château Durfort-Vivens, both located in Margaux, as well as Château Lascombes, Château Rauzan-Ségla and Château Rauzan-Gassies. In Saint-Julien, enthusiasts will appreciate the wines of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Gruaud Larose, and the celebrated Château Léoville Poyferré and Château Léoville Barton. Do not miss Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe, as well as the unmissable Château Pichon Longueville Baron and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac

Château Léoville Las Cases embodies the excellence of great Bordeaux wines, with an unrivalled historical and viticultural heritage. The consistent quality of its wines, vintage after vintage, and the attention paid to every detail in the vineyards and the cellar, make it an unmissable reference in the Saint-Julien appellation. Whether with its Fine Wine, a true jewel of the Médoc, its second wine Le Petit Lion or the Clos du Marquis, each cuvée reflects the exceptional terroir and the passion of the estate's teams. To purchase a wine from Château Léoville Las Cases is to invest in a piece of history, a unique tasting experience and a wine of rare elegance, capable of transcending the decades with grace.
