Frequently Asked Questions About Château Haut-Brion

Château Haut-Brion holds a unique place in the Bordeaux wine landscape. The only representative of the Graves to have been classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 classification, alongside the great names of the Médoc, this estate benefits from an exceptional terroir at the gates of Pessac. Its well-draining gravelly soils, combined with a microclimate slightly warmer than the rest of the Bordeaux region, give it an immediately recognisable aromatic singularity: truffle, smoke, tobacco and dark fruits intertwine in a complexity rarely matched. Add to this centuries of transmitted expertise and an absolute commitment to quality at every harvest, and you will understand why Château Haut-Brion stands as a world reference.

While Château Haut-Brion is world-renowned for its red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, its white wine represents one of Bordeaux's best-kept and most coveted secrets. Produced in confidential quantities — fewer than 1,000 cases per year — Château Haut-Brion Blanc is a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc of extraordinary aromatic complexity. Rich, mineral, and surprisingly long-lived for a white wine, it develops over time notes of beeswax, toasted hazelnut, and white flowers. Its rarity makes it one of the most sought-after and most difficult-to-acquire dry white wines in the world.

Yes, the second wine of Château Haut-Brion is called Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, formerly known as Bahans Haut-Brion until 2007. It is produced from plots or vats deemed not to reach the level of the Grand Vin during the blending process. Far from being a lesser-quality wine, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion offers a genuine gateway into the world of the estate, with a similar style but a more accessible structure and faster maturity. For enthusiasts wishing to discover the DNA of Château Haut-Brion without waiting many years of cellaring, it is a particularly interesting option.

Among the great vintages that have forged the legend of Château Haut-Brion, several stand out particularly. The 1959 is often cited as one of the most sun-drenched and generous of the last century. The 1961, produced in an infinitesimal quantity following spring frost, is of a stunning concentration and depth. The years 1975, 1989 and 1990 also yielded wines of remarkable richness and longevity. More recently within our window, the 2000 and 2005 are unanimously praised by international critics as absolute reference wines, combining exceptional power, elegance and ageing potential.

Château Haut-Brion possesses a gustatory signature that experienced enthusiasts often recognise in a blind tasting. Unlike the more structured and tannic Médocs, it delivers a silky, almost velvety texture from a relatively young age. On the nose, one consistently finds that celebrated earthy and smoky register, with notes of graphite, undergrowth and candied red fruits. On the palate, the freshness and salinity characteristic of the Graves bring a balance and tension that lend it great drinkability despite its richness. It is a wine that combines power and finesse with a disarming ease.

Château Haut-Brion is located in Pessac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, within the great wine-growing region of the Graves, in the Bordeaux area. What makes this terroir truly unique is its immediate proximity to the city of Bordeaux — the vineyard is today almost entirely surrounded by urban development — and the nature of its soils: deep layers of Garonne gravel, these pebbles rolled by the river over millennia, rest on a subsoil of clay and limestone. This warm, well-draining, and nutrient-poor soil forces the vine to drive its roots deep in search of water and nutrients, giving rise to grapes of a concentration and aromatic complexity that account for the universally recognised greatness of Château Haut-Brion.

History of Château Haut-Brion

The history of Château Haut-Brion is a saga spanning more than five centuries, marked by visionary figures and defining moments that have shaped the estate's legend. As early as the 1st century AD, the Romans taught the art of viticulture to the Bituriges Vivisques, founders of Burdigala (ancient Bordeaux), on the gravelly soils of Haut-Brion. A coin bearing the effigy of Emperor Claudius, recently discovered, attests to this early winemaking activity. However, it was in 1521 that the estate first entered written history, with the first mention of the wine of Aubrion in manuscripts held at the Archives Départementales de la Gironde. This document, dated 21 January 1521, marks the birth of the world's first luxury wine brand — long before the 1855 classification.

In 1533, Jean de Pontac, a founding figure, acquired the rights to the Seigneurie de Haut-Brion. In 1549, he undertook the construction of the château, laying the foundations of an estate that would become a model for the great Bordeaux crus. At his death in 1589, at the remarkable age of 101, he bequeathed an already prestigious vineyard. His descendant, Arnaud III de Pontac, a humanist and first president of the Bordeaux Parliament, elevated the estate's renown in the 17th century by exporting its wines to England. In 1660, Haut-Brion wine was served at the court of Charles II, marking a decisive turning point. Samuel Pepys, the English diarist, noted in 1663 having tasted a "French wine called Ho Bryan" with a unique flavor — a record considered the first official wine review.

In the 18th century, Joseph de Fumel modernized the estate with a formal French garden and an orangery, while Thomas Jefferson, future President of the United States, visited Haut-Brion in 1787 and ranked its wines among the four finest in Bordeaux, anticipating the 1855 classification. In 1801, Talleyrand acquired the estate, using its wines to serve his diplomatic endeavors. In 1855, Château Haut-Brion was consecrated as a Premier Grand Cru Classé — the only estate outside the Médoc to receive this distinction.

In 1935, Clarence Dillon, an American banker with a deep love for France, purchased the estate, marking the beginning of a new era. Despite the challenges of the Second World War — during which the château was converted into a hospital — the Dillon family modernized the facilities and restored the grandeur of Haut-Brion. Today, under the stewardship of Prince Robert de Luxembourg, great-grandson of Clarence, the estate perpetuates its heritage with a vision blending tradition and innovation.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Haut-Brion

The terroir of Château Haut-Brion lies at the heart of its unique identity. Located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the vineyard spans 51 hectares, of which 48 hectares are dedicated to red grape varieties (Merlot 45.4%, Cabernet Sauvignon 43.9%, Cabernet Franc 9.7%, Petit Verdot 1%) and 3 hectares to white grape varieties (Sémillon 51.5%, Sauvignon Blanc 48.5%, with a touch of Sauvignon Gris). This exceptional terroir rests on a terrace of Günzian gravel — quartz pebbles mixed with sand, clay, and limestone — formed 600,000 years ago. These soils, ranging in depth from 20 cm to over 3 meters, provide optimal natural drainage thanks to the slopes of the ridges and the neighboring streams, the Peugue and the Serpent.

The distinctive character of this terroir, long scrutinized by figures such as John Locke and Thomas Jefferson, lies in its ability to produce Haut-Brion wines of remarkable complexity and minerality, despite apparently poor soils. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, reach up to 90 years old on certain plots, with a planting density of 8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare. Since 1974, the estate has maintained a mass selection program with over 500 different clones, ensuring the diversity and quality of the vines. Environmental commitment is also central, with gentle soil management, the absence of insecticides, and the preservation of a 3.5-hectare park home to more than 40 bird species.

Winemaking at Château Haut-Brion

Winemaking at Château Haut-Brion is a centuries-old art, combining tradition with cutting-edge technology. The harvests, exclusively manual, are carried out at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting of the grapes to retain only the finest berries. The red grapes are destemmed and placed into double-walled stainless steel vats — an innovation introduced in 1961 and perfected in 1991. Fermentation is precisely controlled to extract color, tannins, and aromas, under the supervision of oenologist Jean-Philippe Masclef and cellar master Florence Forgas.

The blending, a signature of the estate, takes place early — just after malolactic fermentation — to define the wine's profile before its aging in barrels. The grand wines are aged for 18 to 22 months in new oak barrels (up to 80% for the red, 40–45% for the white), of which 70% are produced on-site in collaboration with the cooperage Seguin Moreau. The rackings by candlelight allow for gentle oxygenation, refining the wine while preserving its purity.

For Château Haut-Brion Blanc, the grapes are harvested at dawn to preserve freshness and acidity, whole-cluster pressed without skin contact, and fermented in new barrels without lees stirring or malolactic fermentation. This aging of 13 to 16 months gives the wine a silky texture and a unique aromatic richness.

The Cuvées of Château Haut-Brion

Château Haut-Brion Rouge

Château Haut-Brion Rouge, a Premier Grand Cru Classé, is a wine of unparalleled elegance and complexity. Characterized by an intense minerality and exceptional aromatic persistence, it reveals empyreumatic notes (cigar, cocoa, cedar) and a silky tannic structure. Vintages such as Haut-Brion 1990, 2000, 2009, and 2015 are particularly prized for their ability to age for decades while remaining accessible at a relatively early stage. This wine is the ultimate expression of the gravel terroir, ideal for Haut-Brion wine lovers seeking a memorable tasting experience.

Château Haut-Brion Blanc

Château Haut-Brion Blanc is a rarity, produced in only 600 cases per year. This exceptional white wine combines aromatic richness (citrus, flowers, honey) with an electric and silky texture. Regarded as one of the greatest dry white wines in the world, it rivals the finest crus for its longevity and complexity. Vintages such as Haut-Brion 2010 and 2019 are benchmarks for collectors of rare wines.

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion

Formerly known as Château Bahans Haut-Brion, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, launched in 2007, is the estate's second red wine. Elegant and approachable, it reflects the style of its elder sibling with a more immediate appeal. Renamed in homage to Clarence Dillon, this wine is an excellent introduction to the wines of Château Haut-Brion, offering remarkable quality at a more accessible price.

La Clarté de Haut-Brion

Formerly known as Château Bahans Haut-Brion, La Clarté de Haut-Brion, introduced in 2009, is the estate's second white wine, produced from grapes from Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion. Fresh and expressive, it offers a more accessible alternative to the prestigious Haut-Brion Blanc, while retaining characteristic finesse and minerality.
