More recently within our window, the 2000 and 2005 are unanimously praised by international critics as absolute reference wines, combining exceptional power, elegance and ageing potential.

Château Haut-Brion possesses a gustatory signature that experienced enthusiasts often recognise in a blind tasting. Unlike the more structured and tannic Médocs, it delivers a silky, almost velvety texture from a relatively young age. Château Haut-Brion is located in Pessac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, within the great wine-growing region of the Graves, in the Bordeaux area. What makes this terroir truly unique is its immediate proximity to the city of Bordeaux — the vineyard is today almost entirely surrounded by urban development — and the nature of its soils: deep layers of Garonne gravel, these pebbles rolled by the river over millennia, rest on a subsoil of clay and limestone. This warm, well-draining, and nutrient-poor soil forces the vine to drive its roots deep in search of water and nutrients, giving rise to grapes of a concentration and aromatic complexity that account for the universally recognised greatness of Château Haut-Brion.

The History of Château Haut-Brion

The history of Château Haut-Brion is a saga spanning more than five centuries, marked by visionary figures and pivotal moments that shaped the estate’s legend. As early as the first century AD, the Romans taught viticulture to the Bituriges Vivisci, founders of Burdigala (ancient Bordeaux), on the gravelly lands of Haut-Brion. A recently discovered coin bearing the likeness of Emperor Claudius attests to this early winegrowing activity. The estate first enters the written record in 1521, however, with the earliest mention of Aubrion wine in manuscripts held by the Gironde departmental archives. Dated January 21, 1521, this document marks the birth of the world’s first luxury wine brand, long before the 1855 classification.

In 1533, Jean de Pontac, a founding figure, acquired the rights to the Seigneurie de Haut-Brion. In 1549, he began building the château, laying the foundations for an estate that would become a model for Bordeaux’s great wines. When he died in 1589 at the remarkable age of 101, he left behind an already prestigious vineyard. His descendant, Arnaud III de Pontac, a humanist and first president of the Bordeaux Parliament, propelled the estate to fame in the 17th century by exporting its wines to England. In 1660, Haut-Brion wine was served at the court of Charles II, marking a decisive turning point. In 1663, the English diarist Samuel Pepys recorded tasting a “French wine called Ho Bryan” with a unique flavor—an account considered the first formal wine review.

In the 18th century, Joseph de Fumel modernized the estate with a formal French garden and an orangery, while Thomas Jefferson, the future president of the United States, visited Haut-Brion in 1787 and ranked its wines among Bordeaux’s four best, anticipating the 1855 classification. In 1801, Talleyrand acquired the estate, using its wines to further his diplomacy. In 1855, Château Haut-Brion was named a First Growth, the only estate outside the Médoc to receive this distinction.

In 1935, Clarence Dillon, an American banker with a love of France, purchased the estate, ushering in a new era. Despite the challenges of World War II, when the château was converted into a hospital, the Dillon family modernized the facilities and restored Haut-Brion’s grandeur. Today, under the leadership of Prince Robert of Luxembourg, Clarence’s great-grandson, the estate carries on its legacy with a vision that blends tradition and innovation.

The Terroirs and Vineyards of Château Haut-Brion

The terroir of Château Haut-Brion lies at the heart of its distinctive identity. Located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the vineyard covers 51 hectares, including 48 hectares devoted to red grape varieties (Merlot 45.4%, Cabernet Sauvignon 43.9%, Cabernet Franc 9.7%, Petit Verdot 1%) and 3 hectares to white grape varieties (Sémillon 51.5%, Sauvignon Blanc 48.5%, with a touch of Sauvignon Gris). This exceptional terroir sits on a terrace of Günzian gravel—quartz pebbles mixed with sand, clay and limestone—formed 600,000 years ago. These soils, ranging from 20 cm to more than 3 meters deep, benefit from optimal natural drainage thanks to the slopes of the gravel rises and the nearby Peugue and Serpent streams.

The distinctive quality of this terroir, examined over the years by figures such as John Locke and Thomas Jefferson, lies in its ability to produce Haut-Brion wines of remarkable complexity and minerality despite seemingly poor soil. The vines average 35 years old, with some parcels reaching 90 years, and are planted at a density of 8,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare. Since 1974, the estate has maintained a massal selection program involving more than 500 different clones, supporting the diversity and quality of its vines. Environmental stewardship is also central to its approach, with gentle soil management, no insecticides and the preservation of a 3.5-hectare park home to more than 40 bird species.

Winemaking at Château Haut-Brion

Winemaking at Château Haut-Brion is a centuries-old art that combines tradition with cutting-edge technology. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand at optimal ripeness, then rigorously sorted to retain only the best berries. The red grapes are destemmed and placed in double-walled stainless steel tanks, an innovation introduced in 1961 and refined in 1991. Fermentation is precisely controlled to extract color, tannins and aromas, under the supervision of winemaker Jean-Philippe Masclef and cellar master Florence Forgas.

Blending, a hallmark of the estate, takes place early, just after malolactic fermentation, to define the wine’s character before barrel aging. The grand vins are aged for 18 to 22 months in new oak barrels (up to 80% for the red, 40–45% for the white), 70% of which are made on-site in collaboration with the Seguin Moreau cooperage. Racking by candlelight allows for gentle oxygenation, refining the wine while preserving its purity.

For Château Haut-Brion Blanc, the grapes are harvested at dawn to preserve freshness and acidity, pressed in whole bunches without skin contact, and fermented in new barrels without lees stirring or malolactic fermentation. This 13-to-16-month aging period gives the wine a silky texture and a unique depth of aroma.
