Frequently Asked Questions

Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou stands as an indispensable reference of the Saint-Julien appellation. Its exceptional terroir, composed of deep gravels over a limestone subsoil on the banks of the Gironde, bestows upon its wines a remarkable elegance, combining power and finesse. The estate's consistent quality, vintage after vintage, and the exacting standards of the Borie family, who have led the château since 1941, account for the worldwide reputation of this Bordeaux property.

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou produces its wines from a typically Médoc blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for approximately 70% of the assemblage. It is complemented by Merlot, bringing roundness and volume on the palate, as well as small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This composition gives rise to wines of great ageing potential, characterised by silky tannins, a beautiful aromatic freshness and remarkable depth.

The fine wine of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou comes from the best plots and the oldest vines on the estate, with a very rigorous parcel selection. La Croix de Beaucaillou, its second wine, comes from younger vines or lots not retained for the final blend. More accessible in terms of price and maturity, it nonetheless shares the aromatic DNA of the estate, with that elegant and fruity character typical of Saint-Julien, and offers an excellent introduction to the world of Ducru-Beaucaillou.

Among the legendary vintages of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, the 1961 remains an absolute benchmark, unanimously acclaimed by the greatest critics for its exceptional complexity and longevity. The 1970 and 1982 are also highly sought after, the latter perfectly embodying the generosity and structure of Saint-Julien at its peak. Lovers of mature wines will also appreciate the 2000 and 2005, two prestigious vintages that showcase all the expertise of the estate at the dawn of the 21st century.

To fully appreciate the complexity of a Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, it is recommended to serve it between 16 and 18°C, after decanting for one to two hours for younger vintages. Older bottles, particularly those from the 1970s to 1990s, benefit from being carefully decanted so as not to disturb the natural sediment. In terms of food and wine pairings, this Saint-Julien pairs beautifully with red meats in sauce, feathered game, and pressed cheeses.

A Château Ducru-Beaucaillou from great vintages has an exceptional ageing potential, easily exceeding 30 to 40 years under good storage conditions. Vintages such as 1996, 2000 or 2005 are still far from their peak and will continue to develop in a cellar maintained at 12-14°C, with constant humidity and away from light and vibrations. More modest vintages generally reveal themselves between 10 and 20 years after the harvest, already offering a beautiful aromatic complexity.

History of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from the famous "beaux cailloux" — beautiful pebbles — that make up its unique terroir. The estate was acquired in 1797 by Bertrand Ducru, a brilliant négociant who added his surname to that of the property. His ambition and investment in the vineyards allowed Ducru-Beaucaillou to rise rapidly to the top of the Saint-Julien appellation.

In 1855, during the famous Bordeaux wine classification, the estate was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru, a prestigious status it continues to maintain today. Over the decades, the château has passed through the hands of different families, including the Borie family, who have owned it since 1941. Through rigorous and passionate management, the estate has preserved and enhanced its heritage while adopting modern viticulture practices.

Robert Parker awarded a score of 100/100 to the 1959 and 99/100 to the 2010 and 1953 vintages of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, highlighting their exceptional quality. The 2016, 2009, 1961, and 2018 vintages, rated 98/100, confirm the consistency of this grand cru classé from Saint-Julien.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

The exceptional terroir of Ducru-Beaucaillou, located on the left bank, is one of the estate's principal assets contributing to the quality of its wines. The poor soils, composed primarily of Günz-period gravels, offer ideal conditions for cultivating the noble grape varieties of the Médoc. These quartz pebbles, carried by the ancient Garonne river more than two million years ago, promote excellent drainage of the vines while storing heat during the day and releasing it at night, thus encouraging optimal ripening of the grapes.

Another major asset is the estate's proximity to the Gironde estuary. It acts as a thermal regulator, moderating extreme temperatures and protecting the vines from adverse weather conditions such as hail or winter frosts. This unique microclimate allows the grapes to develop under ideal conditions, while limiting the need for phytosanitary treatments.

The grape varieties grown at the château are primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (25%), and Petit Verdot (5%), with vines averaging 40 years of age. This varietal diversity and the advanced age of the vines allow the production of wines of great complexity, capable of improving over several decades.

Winemaking at Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Winemaking at Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a true art, where every step is meticulously controlled to guarantee the highest possible quality. The selection of grapes begins in the vineyard, with exclusively hand-harvested fruit. A first rigorous selection is carried out directly in the plots, followed by a second sorting upon receipt of the bunches at the winery, where optical sorting is used to remove imperfect berries.

The vinifications are carried out in small truncated cone-shaped stainless steel vats (60 to 80 hectoliters), which allows each plot, or even micro-plot, to be vinified separately in order to preserve the unique identity of each terroir. These vats allow precise temperature control and optimize the extraction of aromas and tannins.

The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 50 to 80% are new. This lengthy barrel aging allows the wines of Ducru-Beaucaillou to develop complex aromas and a silky texture, while refining their tannic structure for optimal cellaring.

The Cuvées of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou offers three great cuvées, each embodying the excellence of the estate in its own way:

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou: The Fine Wine of the estate, recognized for its elegance, depth, and exceptional aging potential. Blended primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, it offers aromas of ripe dark fruits, spices, and tobacco, with silky tannins and a persistent finish.

La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou: The second wine of the château, previously known as La Croix de Beaucaillou, La Croix is sourced from specific plots within the vineyard. More approachable in its youth than the Fine Wine, it captivates with its finesse and remarkable balance. La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, offering notes of red and dark fruits with a beautiful tannic structure.

Le Petit Ducru: The latest creation of the estate, Le Petit Ducru, is a true introduction to the Ducru-Beaucaillou style. It offers beautiful aromatic complexity with fruity and floral notes, a supple texture, and melted tannins, perfect for enjoying in its youth.

Saint-Julien, a flagship appellation of the Médoc in Bordeaux, is renowned for its red wines of great finesse and longevity. Certain vintages stand out particularly for their exceptional quality, offering powerful, elegant, and complex wines. Among the finest vintages, one finds years such as 1975, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1990, which are true references for lovers of age-worthy wines. More recent years are equally notable, with outstanding vintages such as 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, all praised for their balance and aging potential. The years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 also distinguish themselves through their richness and complexity, continuing to make Saint-Julien an unmissable reference in the world of wine.

The Deuxièmes Crus Classés of 1855 constitute a prestigious category, bringing together iconic estates that often rival the first growths in quality. Among them, discover Château Brane-Cantenac and Château Durfort-Vivens, both located in Margaux, as well as Château Lascombes, Château Rauzan-Ségla, and Château Rauzan-Gassies. In Saint-Julien, enthusiasts will appreciate the wines of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Gruaud Larose, and the celebrated Château Léoville Poyferré and Château Léoville Barton. Also not to be missed are Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe, as well as the unmissable Château Pichon Longueville Baron and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac

With a rich history, exceptional terroirs, and unrivaled expertise, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou continues to establish itself as one of the crown jewels of the Bordeaux wine region. Its wines, of rare elegance and fascinating complexity, captivate enthusiasts from around the world. Whether for immediate enjoyment or to enrich a cellar, the wines of Ducru-Beaucaillou are an invitation to discover the very best of Saint-Julien.
