Pauillac Protected Designation of Origin and First Great Classed Growth
Among the estates of Bordeaux's left bank, Chateau Lafite Rothschild's incredible success makes it stand out. The Rothschild family has owned this estate since 1868. This Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classe (Classification of 1855) covers 112 hectares of vines grown according to the sustainable winegrowing principles and growing on sandy-gravel soils made of limestone from the Tertiary period. The Chateau Lafite Rothschild produces two red wine cuvees : the first wine, "Le Grand Vin de Lafite Rothschild", and the second wine, "les Carruades de Lafite Rothschild". These prestige wines are made from a blend of 4 grape varieties from Domaine Lafite Rothschild: Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (2%), which are used in different proportions depending on the vintage and the cuvee. Indeed, it can happen that Cabernet Sauvignon makes up for almost all the blend of the Chateau's prestige cuvee (like in 1961 or in 1994, when it reached 99% of the total blend). The second wine is made of a bigger proportion of Merlot (up to 40%)...
Chateau Lafite Rothschild's wines are of exceptional quality and can be considered as very consistent wines since the 1980s, among the top wines of the classification of 1855. Their quality is truly outstanding, and totally in keeping with Chateau Lafite Rothschild's reputation and with its classification as Pauillac 1st classed growth. Among its best vintages (2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003, 2000, 1998, 1996, 1995, 1986, 1982, 1959), Lafite Rothschild's produced amazing wines which seduced international critics. The estate received the best reviews, especially for the following vintages: 1986, 1996, 2003 and 2010, which were absolutely amazing, as shown by Robert Parker's incredible "tasting note" score of 100. Lafite Rothschild produces a truly great wine that can be described as rich, full-bodied and delicious, with a characteristic cedar, graphite and tobacco nose. It has a great ageing potential (15 to 30 years in the cellar) and an impressive capacity to improve over time. Lafite Rothschild's bottles deserve to be purchased. The second wine called "Les Carruades de Lafite Rothschild" is produced with the same quality.
