The domaine de Château Lafite Rothschild is located in Pauillac, in the Haut-Médoc, north of Bordeaux. The vineyard covers approximately 112 hectares of vines, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 70%), complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The plots benefit from optimal exposure and a soil of Günz gravels that is particularly well-draining, forcing the vine roots to plunge deep to find water and nutrients. To give a memorable bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild, certain vintages are unanimously praised by enthusiasts and critics alike. The 1982 is often cited as legendary, marking a turning point in the estate's history with its extraordinary richness and complexity. The 1996 stands out as a great Médoc classic, remarkable for its precision and structure. The 2000 and 2003 are also highly regarded for their opulence and balance. For an exceptional gift, these vintages perfectly embody the prestige and refinement associated with Château Lafite Rothschild.

To fully enjoy a bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild, a few precautions are in order. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, ideal for revealing its full aromatic complexity. For recent vintages or great years such as 1995 or 2005, a minimum decanting of one to two hours is advised in order to oxygenate the wine and allow its aromas to fully develop. A Bordeaux glass, wide and slightly narrowed towards the top, is the most suitable format. In terms of food and wine pairings, it pairs wonderfully with noble red meats, game, or hard aged cheeses.

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the Bordeaux wines best suited for ageing. Depending on the vintage, its ageing potential is impressive: great years such as 1959, 1982 or 1996 can age serenely for 40 to 60 years, or even longer, under optimal storage conditions. For an ideal cellar, a stable temperature of around 12°C, a humidity level of 70 to 80%, away from light and vibrations, should be maintained. Bottles must be stored horizontally to keep the cork moist. Under these conditions, Château Lafite Rothschild develops over time tertiary aromas of exceptional complexity and depth.

History of Château Lafite Rothschild

The history of Château Lafite Rothschild is a saga spanning nearly eight centuries. It begins in 1234, when the estate, then devoted to grain cultivation and livestock, already bore the name Gombaud de Lafite. It was not until the 17th century, under Jacques de Ségur, that the vineyard began to take shape, laying the foundations for its renown. In 1695, Jacques’s heir Alexandre de Ségur married the heiress of Château Latour, linking two of the Médoc’s greatest names. By the 18th century, Château Lafite wine had won over Europe’s royal courts, particularly Versailles, where it was nicknamed the “King’s Wine” thanks to the support of Marshal de Richelieu, who described it as “the best tonic.”

In 1855, at the Paris Universal Exposition, Château Lafite was named first among the First Growths, a distinction affirming its preeminence among Bordeaux wines. In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired the estate, beginning the Rothschild era, which continues today through six generations. Despite the challenges of phylloxera, the world wars and the Great Depression, the estate rebounded, notably under Baron Élie after 1945 and then Baron Éric from 1974. Since 2018, Saskia de Rothschild, the first woman to lead Domaines Barons de Rothschild, has carried forward this pursuit of excellence, incorporating sustainable practices and a forward-looking vision. This rich history makes Château Lafite Rothschild a symbol of consistency and refinement, embodied by legendary vintages such as 1870, 1959, 1982, 2003, 2009 and 2016.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Lafite Rothschild

The Château Lafite Rothschild vineyard covers 112 hectares in the Pauillac appellation, about 40 km north of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. Divided into three main areas, the vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir: the slopes surrounding the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and a 4.5-hectare plot in the neighboring commune of Saint-Estèphe, included under a historic exemption. Deep, fine gravel soils mixed with windblown sand and resting on a substratum of Tertiary limestone provide optimal drainage and ideal exposure, promoting full ripening of the grapes, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon.

The grape varieties grown are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), followed by Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%). The vines average 39 years of age, but those used for the Château Lafite Rothschild fine wine average 45 years, with historic plots such as La Gravière, planted in 1886. Some vines spared by phylloxera are more than 140 years old, a testament to the resilience of this unique terroir. Since 2017, the estate has undertaken a gradual conversion to organic farming, completed in 2024 for the vines used in the fine wine, reinforcing its commitment to preserving this exceptional ecosystem, surrounded by 126 hectares of marshland designated Natura 2002.

The Carruades plateau, the highest point in the appellation, has clay-and-gravel soils ideal for Merlot, while the gravelly slopes around the château favor the elegance and minerality of Cabernet Sauvignon. This diversity of soils, formed from alluvial deposits from the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, enables Château Lafite Rothschild to produce wines of incomparable complexity and finesse that can withstand climatic fluctuations while fully expressing their terroir.

Winemaking at Château Lafite Rothschild

Winemaking at Château Lafite Rothschild is a model of precision and tradition, designed to bring out the full potential of its unique terroir. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, plot by plot, to respect the characteristics of each terroir and the ripeness of the fruit. They are hand-sorted on traditional tables to ensure a rigorous selection. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in 66 vats of various sizes (45 to 270 hectoliters), made of wood, stainless steel and concrete, allowing winemaking to be tailored to each grape variety and plot. Cabernet Sauvignon is vinified in wood and stainless-steel vats, while Merlot ferments mainly in concrete vats.

Maceration lasts an average of 22 days, with gentle pump-overs to extract tannins and phenolic compounds delicately. After alcoholic fermentation, the free-run and press wines are separated, and malolactic fermentation takes place in smaller stainless-steel vats (25 to 60 hectoliters). In 2010, the estate modernized its facilities with two new vat rooms: one dedicated to Merlot, with concrete vats of 50 to 125 hectoliters, and another for malolactic fermentation, with stainless-steel vats of 30 to 70 hectoliters. This plot-by-plot approach preserves the identity of each terroir through to the final blend.

Aging lasts 18 to 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels made by the Tonnellerie des Domaines in Pauillac, ensuring subtle, beautifully integrated oak notes. Each barrel is tasted individually to select the best lots for the Château Lafite Rothschild fine wine. The wine is fined with 4 to 6 egg whites per barrel, a traditional technique that captures suspended particles. The circular cellar, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill and inaugurated in 1987, holds up to 2,200 barrels, providing a majestic setting for the wine’s aging. This meticulous, hands-on approach gives Lafite Rothschild wines their distinctive signature: timeless elegance and exceptional aromatic complexity.

The Wines of Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild - The Fine Wine

The Château Lafite Rothschild fine wine is the estate’s flagship, a wine of legendary elegance and longevity, considered one of the Médoc’s most refined. Made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon (80 to 95%), supplemented by Merlot (5 to 20%) and sometimes a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it comes from the oldest vines (over 10 years old, averaging 45 years). Its deep red color gives way to a complex bouquet of fresh red and dark fruit, cedar, graphite and toasted notes. On the palate, it offers a silky texture, fine tannins and a fresh, lingering finish, promising exceptional aging potential. Vintages such as 1982, 2003, 2009, 2010 and 2016 are particularly sought after, while some, such as 1870, remain legendary. Average annual production is around 16,000 cases, or 192,000 bottles, sold through the Place de Bordeaux.

Carruades de Lafite - The Second Wine

Carruades de Lafite, the estate’s second wine, takes its name from the Carruades plateau, a clay-and-gravel terroir acquired in the late 19th century. Made primarily from Merlot (often more than 50%), supplemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and sometimes Cabernet Franc, this wine comes from younger vines (under 10 years old).
