Our view on the 2013 vintage
The wines of the 2013 vintage in Bordeaux had to deal with a complicated weather. Bordeaux has been able to produce very good white wines on Pessac Leognan and excellent Sauternes wines. The Bordeaux red wines have suffered more though. They should be drunk in their youth and only the most famous wine producers have been able to create wine able to be cellared for around ten years. All designations have been affected, but Pomerol seems to be slightly spared and so above the rest. In Burgundy, the 2013 vintage was late and complicated as well, but the most talented winemakers managed to produce good red wines, of medium density, in a balanced and gourmet profile. The Chambolle Musigny and Morey Saint Denis sectors slightly dominate in Grands crus and 1 er crus wines. Volnay and Pommard were, once again, hardly hit by the hail, generating small and heterogeneous crops. The 2013 Burgundy white wines from the Cote de Beaune are quite concentrated in Meursault, especially in the premier crus areas. Regarding the Rhone wines, the 2013 vintage was quite delicate. If the wines of the Southern Rhone (Chateauneuf du Pape) have suffered from the Grenache coulure (fruit setting failure), the 2013 Cornas are very successful. In Alsace, the 2013 vintage is of a correct level but as like everywhere else the weather did not really help. The 2013 Gewurztraminers are fresher and less alcoholic, and will be very good to be paired with exotic cuisine. Regarding the Loire wines, the 2013 vintage is quite average and some vineyards like Vouvray were hardly hit by the hail. The Languedoc Roussillon region is honored on this 2013 vintage with very good red wines and excellent white wines that allow the region to produce its best year since 2010.
Which 2013 wine to buy? Our 2013 best buying advices
The 2013 vintage is not the greatest of the decade, however, some wines seem to deserve attention. If you wish to buy a bottle of wine from 2013, we therefore advise you to turn to a Crus Classes of the Medoc or a Pessac Leognan wine: 2013 Batailley, 2013 Mouton Rothschild, 2013 Chateau Margaux, 2013 Pontet Canet, 2013 Malescot St Exupery, 2013 Haut Bailly, 2013 Haut Brion, 2013 Pape Clement. On the Right Bank (Pomerol and Saint Emilion) : 2013 Eglise Clinet, 2013 Lafleur, 2013 Le Gay, 2013 Vieux Chateau Certan, 2013 Ausone, 2013 Canon, 2013 Cheval Blanc, 2013 Clos Fourtet. In Bordeaux white wines (Pessac Leognan): 2013 Domaine de Chevalier, 2013 Pape Clement, 2013 Smith Haut Lafitte. Looking at Burgundy red wines, our advices will be to llok at the 2013 Clos des Lambrays, the wines from the Clos de la Roche designation, or Chambolle Musigny PDO. On the white side: a Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru or a Meursault 1er cru will be great. However, the greatest wines will be found for sure in Languedoc Roussillon: whatever your choice, you can't go wrong!
