Neighboring the Larcis Ducasse estate, Château Tertre Rotebœuf is an unclassified Grand Cru of Saint-Emilion — certainly by the conviction of its owner, François Mitjaville — as it would deserve a place among the finest of its appellation. Located 35km east of Bordeaux, the 5.7 hectares of vines are rooted in the clay soils typical of the southern slopes of Saint-Emilion, planted at approximately 6,500 vines/ha. With an average age of over 40 years, the vineyard is managed using sustainable farming practices and is composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Château Tertre Rotebœuf produces a single red wine cuvée, the Fine Wine de Tertre Rotebœuf. The wine is intense, richly extracted and lush. The texture is candied thanks to harvests conducted as late as possible, and notes of roasted coffee can be found. When young, this wine displays flamboyant fruitiness (cherry jam and blackcurrant), but the pronounced oak aging can come as a surprise. As it ages, the tannins integrate and reveal a great wine for cellaring: the Fine Wine de Tertre Rotebœuf should be kept for a minimum of 5 years in the cellar and will improve for up to 15 years for classic vintages, and can age exceptionally well for up to 25 years, particularly for the excellent 1990 vintage. Since taking over the estate, François Mitjaville has given this wine a new dimension: that of a highly regarded, rare and sought-after grand cru. This commitment to modernity and quality has notably been highlighted by the international press, with excellent scores reaching up to 98/100. The best vintages of Tertre Rotebœuf are 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2000, 1998, 1995, 1990, 1989 and 1988. Its incredible quality and great reputation make it a wine highly sought after by enthusiasts.
