Neighboring Domaine de Larcis Ducasse, Château Tertre Rotebœuf is an unclassified Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, likely by choice of its owner, François Mitjaville, since it deserves a place among the best wines of its appellation. Some 35 km east of Bordeaux, its 5.7 hectares of vines grow in the clay soil typical of Saint-Émilion’s southern slopes, at a density of around 6,500 vines per hectare. The vines are over 40 years old on average, and the vineyard is managed using sustainable pest-control practices. It is planted with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Château Tertre Rotebœuf produces just one red wine cuvée, the Fine Wine of Tertre Rotebœuf. The wine is intense, richly concentrated and lush. Late harvesting gives it a jammy texture, complemented by notes of roasted coffee. In its youth, it bursts with fruit flavors of cherry jam and blackcurrant, though its pronounced oak aging may come as a surprise. As it matures, the tannins soften, revealing a wine built to age: the Fine Wine of Tertre Rotebœuf should be cellared for at least five years and will improve for up to 15 years in typical vintages, or even an exceptional 25 years, particularly for the excellent 1990 vintage. Since taking over the estate, François Mitjaville has elevated this wine to the status of a highly regarded, rare and sought-after grand cru. This commitment to modernity and quality has also been recognized by international critics, with outstanding scores of up to 98/100. The best Tertre Rotebœuf vintages are 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2000, 1998, 1995, 1990, 1989 and 1988. Its remarkable quality and reputation make it highly sought after by wine enthusiasts.
