Appellation d'origine contrôlée and Premier Grand Cru Classé in Sauternes
Managed by the Lurton family since 1971, Château Climens is a Premier Cru Classé of Sauternes and Barsac (1855 classification), located 40 km south-east of Bordeaux (left bank of the Garonne), next to the estates of Doisy-Daëne, Doisy-Dubroca and Doisy-Védrine. The 30 hectares of the vineyard rest on a soil of red sands, clay-ferruginous in nature, sitting on a limestone base. The vines have an average age of 38 years and are cultivated biodynamically at a density of 6,600 vines per hectare. The Climens estate produces only one white grape variety: Sémillon, certified biodynamic since 2010...
Château Climens is renowned for producing very fine and delicate white wines. It produces two excellent white wines: the first wine, named "Fine Wine du Château Climens" and the second wine, "Cyprès de Climens". The Fine Wine du Château Climens offers the taster a golden colour and a very complex nose with nuances of pineapple, citrus fruits, mirabelle plum, apricot, apple, flowers, honeysuckle, and sometimes crème brûlée. This first wine is full-bodied, distinguished and very long on the palate, yet delicate throughout. This wine can readily be considered a wine for ageing, as its cellaring potential spans 10 to 30 years and beyond (or even more than 50 years in the best years). The connoisseur will note that the Fine Wine du Château Climens was not produced in 1965, 1968, 1984, 1987, 1992 and 1993. The second Climens wine, "Cyprès de Climens", offers an aromatic palette composed of white flowers, mint, linden, citrus fruits, apricot and spices; it is a fresh and smooth wine for immediate enjoyment upon tasting. It can be cellared for 5 to 15 years. The critical reception is generally excellent for this château, with Robert Parker scores frequently ranging between 93+ and 100/100. Château Climens holds 3 stars in the green guide of the Revue du Vin de France (RVF). The best vintages of the estate are: 2015, 2014, 2009, 2007, 2005, 2001, 1997, 1990, 1989, 1988, 1986, 1983, 1975, 1971, 1949 and 1947.
