Bourgueil

All wines from the Bourgueil appellation in the Loire Valley

Located in Touraine, the Bourgueil vineyard covers 1,400 ha. Half of it lies on the hillside overlooking the Loire, with soils made up of tuffeau (Turonian chalk) and terraces of sand and gravel. Its red wines, made from Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon (limited to 10%), have a vivid red color with violet highlights, and aromas of bell pepper, blackcurrant, raspberry, liquorice, and cocoa in the older vintages. Tannic and often austere in their youth, their ageing potential is significant (up to 20/30 years for the greatest). The best producers include Yannick Amirault, Bel Air, Breton, Des Ouches, La Butte, La Chevalerie etc...

Where is the Bourgueil appellation located?

The Bourgueil appellation is located in the Val de Loire, in Touraine, about forty kilometers west of Tours, on the right bank of the Loire, at the border between Indre-et-Loire and Maine-et-Loire. It extends across seven communes in the Indre-et-Loire département: Bourgueil, Benais, Restigné, Ingrandes-de-Touraine, Saint-Patrice, Chouzé-sur-Loire and La Chapelle-sur-Loire, to which the territory of Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil was added in 1958, allowing winegrowers to claim both appellations. The vineyard covers approximately 1,400 hectares producing around 70,000 hectoliters per year, farmed by more than two hundred producers. This vineyard adjoins Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil to the west and faces, on the opposite bank of the river, Chinon and Saumur-Champigny, with which it forms the great triangle of Loire Valley cabernet franc.

History of the Bourgueil Appellation

The history of the Bourgueil appellation begins with the spread of the vine in Touraine under the influence of Saint Martin and his disciples, from the 4th century onward. The decisive development came from the Benedictine abbey founded at Bourgueil at the end of the 10th century: its archives mention, from the 11th century onward, the subtle and fruity fragrance of these wines, and the monks organized the methodical planting of the hillside. The accession of Henry II Plantagenet to the English throne in 1154 opened up northern markets, and the river did the rest. Rabelais and Ronsard celebrated these wines, which Balzac also evokes in Maître Cornélius, where Louis XI demands to be served a good wine from Bourgueil.

The Revolution and then the Wars of the Vendée weakened the vineyard, before phylloxera devastated it at the end of the 19th century. The reconstruction was accompanied by a professional organization: the Syndicat de défense des vins de Bourgueil et de Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil was created on 2 March 1937, and the appellation d'origine contrôlée was recognized a few months later by the decree of 31 July 1937. Cabernet sauvignon was admitted in 1962, then limited to 10% of the planting in 1980. Since the 1980s, a generation of winegrowers has shifted the appellation toward single-vineyard work and conversion to organic farming, which today concerns a significant share of the total surface area.

What are the terroirs of the Bourgueil appellation?

The terroirs of the Bourgueil appellation are divided into two main families, spread in roughly equal proportions across three levels. At the bottom, the low alluvial terrace blends gravels, sands and clays: these warm, well-drained soils, close to the river, produce supple, easy-drinking wines with immediate appeal, centered on small red fruits. Above it stretches a high sandy-gravelly terrace formed from older alluvial deposits. Finally, backed against the forest that crowns the plateau, the slopes of Turonian tuffeau, with a predominantly clay-limestone character, yield deep, structured wines capable of ageing for many years and evolving toward notes of spice, leather and roasted flavors.

The climate, a temperate oceanic one, benefits here from a privileged situation: the hillside, facing due south, is sheltered from northerly winds by the Bourgueil forest, while the Loire moderates temperatures. This configuration explains the consistent ripeness of cabernet franc at what is nonetheless a northerly latitude. Certain lieu-dits now rank as genuine climats, such as Grand Mont in Benais, Vaumoreau, Les Perrières, Clos Sénéchal, Les Busardières and Les Galichets, whose names appear on the labels of the finest estates.

What grape varieties are permitted in the Bourgueil appellation?

Cabernet franc dominates the permitted grape varieties in the Bourgueil appellation by a wide margin, where it goes by the local name breton, in memory of the monk steward who is said to have contributed to its spread throughout Touraine. A mid-season variety, early-ripening and well-suited to free-draining soils, it produces wines with a deep purple color, a nose of raspberry, blackcurrant, Morello cherry and violet, lifted by peppery notes, with fine tannins and an acidity that guarantees freshness. Cabernet sauvignon is permitted on an ancillary basis, up to a limit of 10% of the planting and the blend: it brings structure and color in ripe vintages, but many winegrowers today vinify in pure cabernet franc. Yields are capped at 55 hectoliters per hectare, with a ceiling yield of 67, and the natural alcohol level must reach a minimum of 10.5%.

What are the different styles of Bourgueil wines?

Bourgueil wines come in two clearly defined red styles, to which a marginal production of rosés is added. Gravel wines, from the alluvial terraces, focus on fruit vibrancy: destemmed harvest, short maceration of eight to twelve days, ageing in vat, resulting in supple, easy-drinking wines with a fresh finish. Tuffeau wines, born on the clay-limestone hillside, require longer vatting, gentle extraction through pumping over or punching down, followed by ageing of twelve to twenty-four months in large barrels, demi-muids or barriques: they gain in density, depth and complexity. The rosés, obtained by direct pressing or saignée, are dry, lively and fruity.

When it comes to food and wine pairings, the gravel cuvées accompany Touraine charcuterie, rillons, rillettes, roasted géline chicken, white meats and mild cheeses, and pair very well with a slight chill. The hillside cuvées call for more assertive dishes: red meats, duck breast, feathered game, mushrooms, slow-cooked stews, and also Sainte-Maure de Touraine with more evolved vintages. The rosés pair well with grilled dishes and summer starters.

What are the finest vintages of Bourgueil?

The finest Bourgueil vintages of the last thirty years depend above all on the ripeness achieved by cabernet franc, a demanding variety in this northerly climate. Among the great years are 2005, sunny and concentrated, 2009 and 2010, with beautiful fullness, then 2014, 2015 and 2016, a remarkable trio in which 2015 stands out for its richness and 2016 for its precision, despite a difficult spring. 2018 combined ripeness and generosity, 2019 and 2020 delivered dense reds driven by hot summers, 2022 surprised with its balance despite the drought, and 2023 returned to a more Loire-like profile, fresh and fruity.

Conversely, 2011, 2012 and 2013 require careful selection, 2017 suffered from spring frost, 2021 produced light and acidic wines after a cold, frost-prone year, and 2024 will be remembered as a very challenging vintage, marked by considerable mildew pressure. Today, the gravel cuvées from the three most recent vintages are at their peak, the hillside reds from 2014 to 2018 are reaching maturity, while the single-vineyard wines from 2019, 2020 and 2022 still deserve several more years in the cellar.

What are the finest estates of the Bourgueil appellation?

The finest estates of the Bourgueil appellation built its modern reputation by revealing, from the 1980s onward, the value of its individual lieu-dits. Domaine Yannick Amirault, now run with his son Benoît, stands as an absolute reference: farmed organically, spread across Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, it pushes the search for tannin ripeness to the limit and produces, with Le Grand Clos, Les Quartiers and La Petite Cave, cabernet francs of rare finesse that have been acclaimed by all national critics. Catherine and Pierre Breton, based in Restigné, converted their vineyard to organic farming as early as 1991 and then to biodynamics, and have become international figures in natural wine: their cuvée Nuits d'Ivresse, made without sulfur since 1994, is a classic of the genre, alongside Trinch, Les Galichets and the single-vineyard wines Clos Sénéchal and Les Perrières, which demonstrate the ageing potential of the area.

Domaine de la Butte, acquired in 2002 by Jacky Blot, already famous in Montlouis for the Taille aux Loups, occupies an entire hillock of fourteen hectares farmed organically: its three cuvées Le Pied de la Butte, Mi-Pente and Le Haut de la Butte read the hillside from bottom to top with an almost pedagogical clarity, and his son Jean-Philippe continues in the same spirit. Domaine de la Chevalerie, in Restigné, has been in the Caslot family since 1640: fourteen generations, thirty-three hectares in biodynamics and 11th-century cellars carved into the tuffeau, where tens of thousands of bottles rest. Its single-vineyard cuvées Galichets, Chevalerie, Busardières and Grand Mont cover the full spectrum, from fruit-forward wine to wines of very long ageing potential. Domaine du Bel Air, with the Gauthier family in Benais, displays the same level of excellence on hillside terroirs, with Clos Nouveau as an age-worthy cuvée and Jour de Soif in a more immediately approachable register.

How long should a Bourgueil wine be kept?

The ageing potential of a Bourgueil wine depends directly on the soil from which it comes. Rosés are best drunk within a year or two of the harvest. Reds from the gravel terraces, supple and fruity, are most enjoyable between two and five years, the period when their crunchiness is most appealing. Reds born on the tuffeau hillsides, by contrast, need three to four years to soften their tannins and are ideally drunk between five and ten years. The great single-vineyard cuvées from old vines, such as those from Grand Mont or the upper hillside, easily exceed fifteen years and can reach twenty to thirty years in sunny vintages, developing aromas of undergrowth, leather and tobacco.

To preserve this potential, store bottles on their side, in the dark and away from vibrations, between 11 and 13 degrees Celsius, with a humidity level of 70 to 75% — conditions naturally reproduced in the tuffeau cellars of the Bourgueil area. Serve gravel cuvées at around 14 degrees, slightly chilled if needed in summer, and hillside wines between 16 and 17 degrees. A decanting of thirty minutes to one hour benefits younger age-worthy reds, while older vintages simply need a careful opening just before serving.
