Our view on the 1985 vintage
1985 was a very good vintage for Bordeaux wines. The winter was exceptionally freezing (-14°C) but the weather conditions which followed it were very favourable (September was the warmest and driest recorded so far). 1985 vintage produced beautiful red Bordeaux wines, which were immediately pleasant, and the Medoc Grands Crus Classes of Margaux, Pauillac, Saint Estephe and Saint Julien who were able to harvest their Cabernets Sauvignon in October produced great wines. Pomerol produced a fine 1985 vintage, a little more heterogeneous in Saint Emilion. The prices of 1985 wines were very high at the time of their release, but then stabilized. The 1985 white Bordeaux wines are less successful, but a fine trio for the Domaine de Chevalier, Chateau Haut Brion and Chateau Laville Haut Brion. In Sauternes, 1985 was less of a party, because the month of October was dry and did not allow the development of Botrytis. The weather forecast for 1985 Burgundy wines was the same as for the Bordeaux vineyards (frozen a -24°C in Cote de Nuits in January). However, with a beautiful summer and mild September, the quality of the 1985 vintage was excellent. Slight advantage to be noticed for the red Burgundy wines, which are deeper, rich, ripe and balanced. The 1985 Champagne has produced a very good year (Louis Roederer, Laurent Perrier) but in small quantities. Regarding the Rhone Valley wines, 1985 Cote Rotie and 1985 Hermitage are superb. Fine soft and magnificent 1985 Clos Rougeard in the Loire Valley. A good vintage also for 1985 Alsace wines and Alain Brumont's Madiran wines (1985 Montus, 1985 Bouscasse) which have started to make a name for themselves with this very successful 1985 vintage, as in Jurancon.
