Small 1991 vintage for Bordeauxwines due to a historic frost on April 21, which devastated the vineyard and more particularly in Pomerol and St Emilion. Late flowering, late maturity of the grapes, winemakers had to wait to harvest; but again the fate continues and a storm on September 25th disrupts the last hopes by pouring in 1 day twice the precipitation of a total month! 1991 Pomerol has largely downgraded its wines, 1991 Saint Emilion has not produced good wines, and only a few Crus Classes from the Northern Medoc and Graves have been able to offer interesting 1991 wines. No notable in Bordeaux white, and the sweet wines of 1991 Sauternes are rather weak because of the rains. In 1991 Burgundy, the red wines are better than the Burgundy white wines, and without the rains before the harvest, they could have been superb. However, they have retained a somewhat austere character, if one compares them to 1989 and 1990. 1991 Champagne produced wines of average quality and few of 1991 are to be cellared. The Northern Rhone Valley produced the best wines of the 1991 vintage, especially for 1991 Cote Rotie, 1991 Hermitage or 1991 Cornas, which are perfect now. Ravaged by the April frost, the Loire Valley produced lean and acidic wines in both colours in 1991. In Alsace, the 1991 Rieslings are quite good.
First of all, we would advise you to turn your focus on the Northern Rhone wines, undeniably favoured, such as 1991 Cote Rotie and 1991 Hermitage wines. In Bordeaux, the 1991 red wines should draw your attention: the 1991 Latour, 1991 Pichon Comtesse, 1991 Lynch Bages, 1991 Lafite Rothschild for 1991 Pauillac wines ; then 1991 Montrose, 1991 Cos Estournel, 1991 Lafon Rochet for 1991 Saint Estephe wines; Choose a Saint Julien among 1991 Leoville Las Cases, 1991 Leoville Poyferre, 1991 Leoville Barton and 1991 Beychevelle or even a 1991 Domaine de Chevalier, 1991 Haut Brion or 1991 Mission Haut Brion if you are looking for a 1991 Pessac Leognan wine. In red Burgundy, 1991 1er crus and Grands Crus are to be preferred as their exceptional terroir have been useful to balance the weather. If you are looking for a white wine from 1991, some Rieslings may still be still lovely.
