Wine 1991

A modest vintage for Bordeaux wines 1991 due to a historic frost of -9°C on 21 April, which devastated the vineyards, particularly in Pomerol and St-Émilion. Late flowering, delayed grape ripeness — it was necessary to wait before harvesting; but once again fate struck and a storm on 25/09 shattered the remaining hopes, dumping in a single day twice the total rainfall of an entire month! In Burgundy 1991, the red wines are better than the white wines, and without the rains before the harvest, they could have been superb. They nonetheless retained a somewhat austere character, when compared to 1989 and 1990.

Our advice for buying a 1991 wine

Pomerol 1991 largely downgraded its wines, Saint Emilion 1991 did not produce good wines, and only a few Crus Classés from the Northern Médoc and Graves were able to offer interesting wines. No notable whites in Bordeaux and the Sauternes sweet wines 1991 are mediocre due to the rainfall.

The Champagne 1991 produced wines of average quality and few 1991s are suitable for ageing. The Northern Rhône Valley produced the best wines of the 1991 vintage, especially in Côte Rôtie 1991, Hermitage 1991 or Cornas 1991, which are at their peak now. Devastated by the April frost, the Loire Valley produced thin and acidic wines in 1991 in both colours. In Alsace, the 1991 Rieslings are rather good.

First and foremost, we recommend turning your bottle purchase towards the Northern Rhône, undeniably favoured with its Côte-Rotie and Hermitage. In Bordeaux, it is the 1991 red wines that should attract your attention: châteaux Latour, Pichon Comtesse, Lynch Bages, Lafite Rothschild in Pauillac 1991, Montrose, Cos d'Estournel, Lafon Rochet in Saint Estèphe 1991, the Saint Julien 1991 wines from the Léoville and Beychevelle sector, or Domaine de Chevalier, Haut Brion or Mission Haut Brion in Pessac Léognan 1991. In Red Burgundy, 1ers crus and Grands Crus 1991 are to be favoured, as for village appellations, the year was not considered suitable for ageing.
