Our view on the 1993 vintage
A vintage that can be described as correct for the 1993 Bordeaux wines despite difficult weather conditions. The summer was hot, but September brought high rainfall, three times bigger than the normal level. Despite everything, the successes can be considered more numerous than in the years 1991 and 1992. The 1993 Medoc Crus Classes in Saint Julien stand out, and the Graves / Pessac Leognan sector produced good 1993 red wines and, above all, some excellent 1993 white Bordeaux wines (1993 Haut Brion and 1993 Laville Haut Brion). In 1993 Pomerol and 1993 Saint Emilion, the wines are firm, and deeper than in the Medoc where Cabernet Sauvignon was imperfectly ripe and had to be sorted importantly. The year 1993 is considered to be low in sweet wines from Sauternes and even 1993 Yquem could not have stood out. The Burgundy in 1993 also had a capricious weather, the quality of 1993 Burgundy red wineswas good, and they have grown in complexity and length with age. The Cote de Nuits was more favoured in red and some 1993 Burgundy Grands Crus wines are excellent (such as Ponsot estate). Concerning the 1993 white Burgundy (Cote de Beaune and Maconnais), 1993 will have been of inferior quality to 1992, giving rather quickly beautiful floral notes, but the majority of the white wines of 1993 lack complexity to be cellared for long. Small 1993 vintage in Champagne, however charming. As for the 1993 Rhone Valley wines, the Northern Rhone was affected (mildew), and produced simpler wines than usual. The year is better in Southern Rhone, in particular in 1993 Chateauneuf du Pape and 1993 Gigondas. Alsace was spared from the September rains and was able to produce an intermediate 1993 vintage (not large), with some interesting Rieslings.
Which 1993 wine to buy? Our 1993 best buying advices
Our advice for choosing a wine from the 1993 vintage? Go for the following 1993 red Bordeaux wines: in 1993 Saint Julien, the 3 Leoville sector (1993 Leoville Las Cases, 1993 Leoville Poyferre and 1993 Leoville Barton), or in 1993 Pauillac the wines of the 1993 Lafite Rothschild. In 1993 Pessac Leognan, 1993 Haut Brion is excellent in white and rather successful in red, or 1993 Laville Haut Brion in white. For lovers of Saint Emilion we recommend that you buy a bottle of 1993 Valandraud (garage wine renowned for its concentration). In 1993 Burgundy reds, the 1993 Grands Crus from Ponsot estate are excellent (1993 Chambertin, 1993 Clos de La Roche). In Alsace, the Weinbach estate produced good Rieslings (1993 being Catherine Faller's first vintage in the estate).
